Tioga pass to the Pacific Northwest: (leg one)

- We have been planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest for a while now and today was the day. We started in Mammoth then up through Tioga pass into Yosemite after that we crossed the valley and made our way to the coastline.

7:20 You can see the exfoliation taking place on this granite pluton as the Sierra range continues to uplift. Even as a geology nerd I still have trouble wrapping my head around the fact that all this used to be molten magma sitting 5-10 miles below the surface -- the entire range, from Almanor to Tehachapi. That's what makes this entire area so fascinating to me.

We have lots of bears in Placerville this fall. And deer and mountain lions. Something jumped on my roof last week from the oak tree at 10:00 pm. No,I stayed inside.
9:14 This area is more of what the Sierra Nevada looked like _before_ Basin & Range extension and uplift of the Sierra Batholith. Mostly basalt roof pendants, transitioning to sedimentary rocks down by the Central Valley, which of course used to be ocean shoreline before the San Andreas Fault began to form.

CONSTUCTION OF TIOGA ROAD IS DUE TO DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE MASSIVE SNOW AND RUNOFF FROM LAST WINTER. ONE REASON WHY THERE WAS A DELAY WITH OPENING THE ROAD THIS PAST SPRING. ALSO, A GREAT ROAD TRIP IS TO GO NORTH ON HWY 49 FROM OAKHURST TO PLACERVILLE; A TON OF HISTORY AND YOU CAN SPEND A FEW DAYS DOING IT. SAFE TRAVELS JASON.
2:00 I'm glad to see they're doing this; I just wonder what the cost-sharing proportion is between private and public, considering that as far as I know Mammoth Lakes hasn't emerged from bankruptcy yet. My guess is they're using TIF funding to put this together.

I just made a similar trip a few weeks ago. Mammoth 24th,25th. Then over to Yosemite Valley 26th,27th,28th. It was fantastic. My wife, Lori and I, 26th anniversary. We took our Husky with us. We all had a great time. Stayed at the Tenaya lodge.
