In this episode of Make: Inventions I build an elevator and reenact the death-defying stunt that Elisha Otis performed at the 1854 World's Fair.
Otis had invented a safety break for elevators, but couldn't find any buyers. Everyone knew that elevators were only for cargo and were too dangerous for people to ride. To prove that his invention was safe he built a four story elevator and boarded his car in front of curious attendants. When he reached the top his assistant cut the rope with an ax. The crowd looked on as his elevator fell only a couple inches - and stopped.
In this video I show how I built one of Otis's original safety elevators and then see if it will keep me safe when the rope lets go.

You could've just show us the micro-scale model, but you went out and made something amazing! And you still managed to keep this video short and on point. It's great!
Why am I watching and not studying for my exams tomorrow
Did you pass?
Pure procrastination
the simple designs are always the best
You spent so much energy on that. Impressive. Thank you so much. Does this video ever pay back?
Success to you
most likely not as much as it cost to build this. if all of the viewers didnt have ad block and got 2 ads he would probably make only 100 dollars at most
I'm an ESL teacher in Poland, and one of the lessons was about Elisha Otis and his invention. I didn't quite understand how it worked, but this video clearly explained it for me and my student. Thanks for making this.
0:16 "A broken rope would mean a quick and violent death." /upbeat robot voice
XD Wow I love this guy.
This is a great video! Love the large scale build.
Awesome build Steve! It's amazing what inventions made the world what it is today. Thanks for the great education.
unless the spring is broken
Berstich If the spring breaks the pieces would still be pushed slightly outwards due to the gravity acting on the other part. While this isn't nearly enough force to catch you if the rope broke, it probably is enough force to cause an annoying noise when the elevator is being used normally. This annoying noise hopefully resulting in someone getting called out to fix it.
+Berstich you right.. only spring in pit lift left.
I’m here because of Fact Fiend. Thanks Karl
I never realized how that worked, Cool!
Fabulous video. Educational and fun... two thumbs up.
3:12 That's the sound of safety!
This is awesome!!! I'm an architecture tour guide, and this is a helpful little piece of the skyscraper story! Also love the tux!
Perhaps you could do a video about the steam engine or other piston oscillating engine.
He sound like a computer voice from GoAnimate!
Why is Otis safety mechanism considered influential? Modern elevator does not use his design. Today in an event of an emergency, we rely on clamp brakes that clamp down onto the cables. They are not the same at all
The Man is amazing. He built a scale model...WOW!!! Right about the quality of the project.Keep it coming, and Thanks. Do a full scale Trebochet next????
Yeah, watching them do that bugs me too. The brake will immediately engage against the rails. The cables have nothing to do with it.
I love DiResta but it's just amazing to see how much time and efford you put into this. This is quality stuff and the concept of this show would be great as a TV format... hint hint. It's too bad they show up only once a month but I totaly agree; it's not about quantity but about quality... and this series clearly shows that!
Thanks again.
Brilliant - thanks for sharing!
I love Steve Hoefers videos! Theyre always great. Ive wondered for a long time how elevaors work.
Lol nice suit ^^ :)
This is so cool! I guess I can relax a little bit now :p
So it's like a button, but upsidedown and it was pulled/pressed by the string, and when the resion is released, the hook comes out. Basically like how a door work.
Awesome video! very well done.
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
the 'pawls' as you call them - in the elevator world - are referred to as 'dogs' ... you're welcome
my history class doesn't deserve you
Im guessing a hydraulic cylider lift would have this device implemented at the bottom?
Make Inventions is my favorite. Keep going!!
This is explained brilliantly. Great work.
If you are interesting learning more about elevators check out the "Secret Life of Machines" episode about elevators .. a great but older show ..

muy bueno
Nifty concept. You should have used the other side of the hinges as the stop instead of depending on tiny bent ends, though. Use more of a sawtooth pattern in the uprights for catches. You could probably get away with less engagement and way more catches for a less harsh safety stop.
Kindly provide me 4to5 literature review on elevator industry
Great work of the big scale build!
definitely a mattress cushion just out of shot for the live test.
Make can make excellent videos, learn how to handle youtube and you can avoid all the hate...
This is really bad . LOL
This is easy to see the design, and simple construction, unlike another one I saw. These lifts need a coil of rope hung up on it, for when it stops mid way, for the person to get down, and for my one, a harness and caribiner for me, so old, to get down.
Please check your Otis contract carefully - They MIGHT claim NO LIABILITY for consequential damages, special or consequential losses.
They might also LIMIT 3rd party claims to 25% of the contract value.
It might be a standard practice for Otis, but double check your contract.
IF THINGS GO WRONG, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.
Our personal experience has been that there is delay from Otis at almost every step and the contract absolves them. This ALMOST ALWAYS results in consequential damages. We were under the assumption that it's a reputed company and they might stick to their timelines and safety precautions but it was a lesson hard learnt for us.
If you are a developer or a builder or just want a lift for your home, my Lawyers advice has been to make provisions for:
1. Delays upto 12 weeks from the promised date of completion. Almost always include a liquidated damages clause if you foresee a significant consequential loss from delay of delivery or execution.
2. Inadvertent 3rd party claims which might occur. Please note that Otis's contract MIGHT limit the contract value so the developer/builder might be held accountable for 3rd party claims.

OTIS MIGHT CONTRACTUALLY LIMIT THIRD PARTY CLAIMS- PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK.
THANKS FOR ALL THE EFFORD ! THIS I WORTH A DAMN SUBSCRIBE! NOT SOMEONE WHO PLAYS COD AND ACT'S LIKE HE DID SUCH A HARD WORK!
You must have a bunch of random things in your house
Amazing video!! 👍😀
Fantastic job! You should hand this video out to schools. I think it would interesting for kids to watch.
Great. Now I'm stuck, thinking like this. At least, for some time. Not cool.
ಠ_ಠ
You made this up. Come on, don't let me down!
I like your garage
Very cool video.
Yeah its cool but, how do that for going to a down floor?
I really like this guy. Hope to see more of him in the make videos.
Thank you!
Great video
Amazing invention. Thanks for sharing!
This is really cool, and I like it. I would ride it
you owe' me a monitor, jesus christ, what an avatar
Thanks
Awesome
hoisted by Steve Hoefer
Nice seeing how you built it, but I remember they did the same experiment on "Secret Life of Machines"
Watch 1:09 to 1:26 again.
That was amazing
I. Find it. Relaxing.
nice safety man
you need some welding lessons
well now i feel much safer :D
Brilliant!
more make invention! :D
I like :-)
저걸 직접 만들었어 ,,대단
Amazing!
Heights scare me, I don't like being any higher up than the third floor.
