Yeah it's better to solo it and keep on top of things, corner boxes tables etc. Apparently if your companion gets infected they are a part of you so bummer on that one lol.
When I did this mission, I named my character after myself which is Austin. When I met Austin of Vault 81, he seemed like a cool kid. When I found he caught a disease from the mole rats later on, I felt bad and decided to carry on the mission. I had it all planned out to grab the cure and use it on him because I'm a nice guy. That is, until I was infected by the mole rats as well. I tried to split the cure but that wasn't an option apparently. So instead, I kept the cure. There can be only one Austin.
Reload basically gives you a time traveling ability so as to properly uninfect yourself while giving you Sherlock Holmes probability insight and you opt to go all Highlander.
Codsworth being in earshot as you mock a dying child is a real punch in the gut considering he's the only other character in the Commonwealth who knows what you were like before your family was destroyed.

Constant quicksaving, molotov cocktails, grenades, especially cryo grenades (an investment I have to start at lvl 1 mind you) and a fully upgraded combat shotgun. _This is the way_

Of course not... It's a Bethesda game. There's literally zero you can do with anything end game. Like becoming director of the institute, it literally does nothing.
There's also the Cabot House quest with the serum that makes you immortal. Imagine if they'd added quests to give these to the Institute or other scientists to research and do something with. Or also use Virgil's supermutant cure. All wasted opportunities.
The cure already known. But they need it asap, because to make another Curie doesn't have the ingredients. Curie can make another, but it's Bethesda game.
Honestly to make it an actual moral quandary; they should have offered a divergent quest where you could give the cure to the institute which they could replicate and inoculate anyone, but at the price of that vault; or you could cure the child and thus the vault, but at risk of the rest of mankind. A literal trolley problem but quest form.
Theres no reason to innoculate everyone else, the mole rats are entirely contained within vault 81 and if the sole survivor is hit it barely effects them long term.
I love how in this quest you can say no I’m gonna keep it, then the doctor asks you about not giving it to the kid, then u leave the convo, take it, then talk to the doc saying just kidding, then give the kid the cure. It’s having ur cake and eating too lol
It's odd really, they expect a wastelander, who they charged 3 fusion cores for entry, to go into a cave filled with mutant disease ridden molerats to save one of their own, i know security has only 10mm pistols and batons but im fairly certain it's enough to take on said molerats.

There's only 3 reasons to visit the that vault and do the stupid quest. Curie, bobblehead, and overseers guardian. Other than that, I'd sabotage their vault reactor and weld the vault door shut. Sadly you're forced to be a good person in F4. I got put into a giant ice box, wife was killed, son was kidnapped, and I got Preston on my ass about some "settlements." Violence is the solution.
great agent smith character. my first time through 4 i actually made Sterling Archer. not knowing about the special names list for Codsworth, it was a neat touch he'd call my character by his name. i then proceeded to run around the wastes, get hammered and make snarky sarcastic remarks to every question i was asked.

I just finished this quest last night. Went through the whole thing without getting bit, then I realized that kinda took a lot away from the whole moral dilemma aspect so I went through it again and "accidentally" got bit. Now I have a permanent -10 hp as a souvenir!

Isn't this the disease that if the player gets a bit once they contract it and then they have to decide whether to give the cure to him or use it to save themselves (even though it's only really a small penalty to some of your stats nothing really significant unless you had really meticulous skill points set up)
You get minus 10 Hp. :D It's basically nothing. And if you save the kid, they give you a free room and love you. Either way, it doesn't matter, except for RP, but I love how some people treat the debuff as if it's debilitating. :D

Both of your points are reasonable. The room is inherently meaningless, the same way playing a video game is meaningless. But having a free room in a secure prosperous settlement is valuable from an RP and Survival Mode standpoint. And having a permanent debuff icon is annoying, but others have talked about how to avoid getting bit at all, like not taking companions or activating the securitrons. And on PC, there are mods to remove it. I'm not arguing that you shouldn't keep the medicine in order to cure your molerat disease. But in that case, why even take the quest? Then you don't even risk getting the disease, and you aren't responsible for taking a child's life saving cure right up to their doctor and then keeping it. :D The XP is negligible in a game with no level cap, and unlimited enemies and radiant quests. Look, people can do whatever they want, but all the ways they try to justify it just fall flat. If you don't cure the kid, you are a horrible person...in the game. Which is inherently as meaningless as the free room, or the kid's life, or the main quest, or the game in general. Some people may want to play as a horrible person. But for everyone else, they have no excuse. :D

Fun fact: you CAN avoid having the disease if you are never bitten by mole rats, but that requires MW2019 shipment level of sweaty to pull off.

great agent smith character. my first time through 4 i actually made Sterling Archer. not knowing about the special names list for Codsworth, it was a neat touch he'd call my character by his name.
i then proceeded to run around the wastes, get hammered and make snarky sarcastic remarks to every question i was asked.
"I'm spooning a .50 cal, I could kill a building"

@@Bobby-rq5pe I had Spray'n'Pray too, but I kinda shelved it during a test run. Found the 10mm later on, decided to use it as one of my mains, renamed it "The Noisy Cricket".

There's a few extra serums around that a savvy person can keep for themselves too.

I just finished this quest last night. Went through the whole thing without getting bit, then I realized that kinda took a lot away from the whole moral dilemma aspect so I went through it again and "accidentally" got bit. Now I have a permanent -10 hp as a souvenir!
Yeah, it's not really a problem for the Player. :D Then again, you can RP it as just being that good. "I make being Paragon look easy."

@@osmaine2755 Yeah, I think as gamers, we overthink the debuff too much, but the opportunities for RP are endless.
It's more about the damned icon. Played a few hundred hours of survival and having an icon makes me jumpy.

And that,s what i did and massacare the whole vault plain and simple vault tec does not want people to live in their vaults anyway so i did them a favor in that reguard

Isn't this the disease that if the player gets a bit once they contract it and then they have to decide whether to give the cure to him or use it to save themselves (even though it's only really a small penalty to some of your stats nothing really significant unless you had really meticulous skill points set up)
You get minus 10 Hp. :D It's basically nothing. And if you save the kid, they give you a free room and love you. Either way, it doesn't matter, except for RP, but I love how some people treat the debuff as if it's debilitating. :D

Both of your points are reasonable.
The room is inherently meaningless, the same way playing a video game is meaningless. But having a free room in a secure prosperous settlement is valuable from an RP and Survival Mode standpoint.
And having a permanent debuff icon is annoying, but others have talked about how to avoid getting bit at all, like not taking companions or activating the securitrons. And on PC, there are mods to remove it.
I'm not arguing that you shouldn't keep the medicine in order to cure your molerat disease. But in that case, why even take the quest? Then you don't even risk getting the disease, and you aren't responsible for taking a child's life saving cure right up to their doctor and then keeping it. :D The XP is negligible in a game with no level cap, and unlimited enemies and radiant quests.
Look, people can do whatever they want, but all the ways they try to justify it just fall flat. If you don't cure the kid, you are a horrible person...in the game. Which is inherently as meaningless as the free room, or the kid's life, or the main quest, or the game in general. Some people may want to play as a horrible person. But for everyone else, they have no excuse. :D
