  • Hermann Baumann, one of the greatest horn player of all time, gives us a lesson on the second concert of Mozart, how to play and now, as a conductor.
Master Class de Hermann Baumann, uno de los más grandes trompistas de todos los tiempos, con el segundo concierto de Mozart como intérprete y ahora como director.

Undoubtedly, Herr Baumann was/is a great player.
But, "the greatest of all time" ?
I understand player and personal loyalties.
But many would challenge, "the greatest of all time".
HOW do you measure that ?
    How do you differentiate ?
Even considering the recorded (audio) history, the question can be debated.
    You know the alternatives.
It's reasonable to assert that he is among the greatest.
That is all the can reasonably be said.

Wrong. The greatest horn player is clearly Dennis Brain. All who followed were essentially imitating Brain. Dennis had no one to listen to and build on except for his father. Dennis Brain was not only an incredible virtuoso…..he was a pioneer.

When I first heard Tommy Loy play in Dallas as a teenager, I knew there must inevitably be a maestro Baumann ahead (may the reader understand). Viel zu wenig lob: Eines von Messing-Intrumental-Unsterblichhen..! Leben fur immer, Hermann! Solo Deo Gloria, JC

that's a huge claim, which i would strongly disagree with. He's incredible, but "de gustibus non est disputandum" (there is no disputing tastes). to me there is no one with the same artistry on the horn as dennis brain, nor there ever will be again. baumann was just too flubby and german horn sounding.

Dennis Brain made the big footprints for Baumann and others to walk in.

@@dbryant4 … and before Brain there were many others, long forgotten…. not having the Media possibilities of Hi-Fi Stereo recordings! just looking at the repertoire and concert programmes of players like Xavier Reiter, Joseph Suttner and others is enough to show us that Dennis Brain‘s greatest achievement, was not mainly his exquisite playing, which may or may not have reached that of Josef Suttner, but that he had the capabilities to record his playing on LP‘s. Unfortunately one raves about his playing in such a way as to hint that no player before him was capable of playing a Mozart or Strauss Horn concerto. To see this differently shouldn‘t diminish his accomplishments!
(the same goes for my teacher Baumann as well, whose playing has inspired me since my teenage years!!)

@@andrewhale337 "… and before Brain there were many others, long forgotten…" that is an unfalsifiable claim of little value.

Starting at 2 15 you can see a natural horn in the background to the left
A natural horn is a French horn without valves
