- It's time for another Breaking the Backlog episode where I take a look at The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening! I'm only 13 days late to talk about it in conjunction with Tears of the Kingdom but whatever. Let's see if this Game Boy game holds up!

Spending more time making videogames instead of playing them these days. A friend of mine has basically dropped off the map, though.

Man I am proud, I played this game again as an adult and that dungeon is fucking rough, child me was way smarter than I gave him credit for
I think Oracle of Seasons is going to be peak 2D Zelda for you! It's got the same tight pacing as Link's Awakening, but the dungeons are not nearly as labyrinthine. Ages was my favorite, but i like getting lost in the more puzzle- box style dungeons lol

I want remakes too (I've never said this before), of ages and seasons.
Seasons>Ages (tho tied for 2nd fav zelda games) bc more exploratory than puzzle focused
My experience with Zelda is also pretty limited, but I grew up with the franchise as my brother would play the Zelda collection on Gamecube. I only played Link's Awakening (2019) at the end of last year, and it is def my favorite Zelda. The story, the dungeon, music, everything is so precious to me. I feel especially connected to it since I heard a orchestra version of Ballad of The Wind fish many years before I played it. Getting to experience the story that that wonderful song came from was truly remarkable.
I really dig a lot about Link's Awakening, but there are also things I dislike. Specifically that pillar dungeon! Even on my most recent playthrough on the Switch I got confused hahaha.

Link's Awakening is the only game I've seen that uses an italic pixel art font that's actually good.

Shopkeeper is most OP Zelda Boss of all time
This game far and away the best gameboy game when released. All the issues you brought up are valid, but at the time it was competent as a portable adventure game (they were a mess) and very accessible (you dont need to know outside zelda lore, and great cameos. Its based off twin peaks) and perfect graphics when the gameboy had really terrible graphics.
Actually most people I knew never heard of this game before the switch remake.
I prefer 2D zelda so apparently I am in the minority.
I recently played through The Minish Cap through NSO, I’d definitely recommend that. Comparable to your own experience I am definitely a fan of 3D Zelda games, having only played the original first game, Zelda II (didn’t beat that either), Link to the Past and recently the Switch remake of Awakening as well as the aforementioned Minish Cap from the 2D series, but I am very much looking forward to playing the Oracle games when they release on NSO as they are recommended to me constantly.
And if you want to check out a 3D, you can’t go wrong imo with Twilight Princess. A story almost as good as OoT and presented far more cinematically. Also the famous hero shot of Link and Epona on that bridge of course 😄
Not my favorite Zelda my a long shot, but one which I think fondly about. They took a really experimental risk with this first portable entry and it paid of handsomely. And while it has it's flaws, and isn't for everyone, I will still proudly call it a classic worth many peoples time. Keep up the good work, and have a nice day.

Since you completed Link to the past and Link’s Awakening.
You should check out the Oracle of Ages and seasons games, Link between worlds, the 4 Swords games, Spirit Tracks.
For the 3D games Ocarina of time on 3DS, Majora’s Mask on either 3DS or Gamecube, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess(not the Wii version) Skyward Sword(Switch) etc.
Link's Awakening is a game that I remember fondly during my early years playing the GameBoy version. 🗡️ It's the only game in the series I finished all the way and I would be glad to go back and play it again! 🐳✨

I don't know if it is the capture card or the emulation on Switch, but the game is... off.
This was the first Zelda game I played, so it lives rent free in my heart, and I played it to death (only Game Boy game I had for a LONG time), and the colors and transparency seem weird in the video, besides some visual glitches.
Anyway, nice video!
It could also be the footage conversion process I do. I noticed that while I was making the video but couldn't figure out what the issue was. Looked fine on my TV screen so I don't think it's the Switch emulator.
@@CloudConnection Fair enough! Since the switch emulation had a hiccup on the start (especially with Ocarina of Time) I was not sure, as I don't have the NSO.
