4 years later and the prices of the memory cards is still fucking ridiculous. Great logic, sony. Make your memory cards fucking expensive to "combat piracy." Good job, guys. You just encouraged piracy by making your console more expensive and difficult to obtain by not only not advertising for it worth a jack shit, but also by making the memory card cost almost as much as the console itself. What the fuck.
No shit. I've gotten so many free games from plus that I can't even download. I got the COD bundle and the 4 gb card that it came with was just enough for Mortal kombat, Uncharted, COD, and metal gear. I can't get anymore games now. Guess imma have to bite the bullet and buy a 64 gb card
I agree and I am fucking angry and tired of trying to figure out a way to buy a vita which I have enough to get it on Amazon, but looking for offers of people just to get a 4gb card and now people say that ain't enough. Fucking bullshit of Sony man
Classified Chappy I bought a 16gb. I managed to squeeze 4 downloaded games on it. One thing you can do is download Content Manager on your PS3 or PC/Mac, you can transfer your games, music, saves, etc. to your other system
lil115slayer I may try that since I read people mention that where this us the first time today I heard of it. My friend on Facebook will give me a sale of the vita with 8gig and a game with other parts of it where that is awesome since I fine with the stick since I am getting tired of running money on short just to get it.
+ShadowRealmFox even worse is, Steam is now getting Danganrompa, pretty much making the PSV null and void... Sony is pretty much focussing on the PSVR.
No wonder the system sold like shit. $299 for the system back in 2012 + $120 for a 32 gb card + $40 for one game = $460 introductory price before you are even able to play the vita, what a fucking joke. $170 for a 3ds + $40 for a 32 gb card + $40 for 1 game = $250 introductory price tag. This seems like another case of the game boy vs. the game gear. The game gear I think was $199 back in the day, and the game boy was about $70, not to mention the batteries the game gear ate.
you 2 years later, the system released 2012. i'm glad i spurge 103 bucks for a 64gb ps vita card! still cost high compare to other regular 64gb memory card!
I bought the PS Vita recently, and picked up the 32GB Memory Card... used. No way will I spend that much for a memory card and in no way will I support that kind of BS.
+Ashley Johansson I think your onto something! All I need is a way to power my pc, strap it to my back and use it as external storage to save my games! Haha
It’s near the end of April 2021 and those dastards are STILL stupidly expensive. And before that time I had a 32 GB card that up and crashed on me when I was about to play Killzone: Mercenary. Just went and froze my Vita completely until I resented the thing. Pair that with an incident that left a dent on that nice OLED screen and it’s just downhill from here.😔
As much as I love my Vita and love the fact I've turned my friends into Vita players, I always do tell people to exorcise caution when it comes to memory card purchasing. I always give people a list of scenarios and have them pick. 4 GB: It's okay to start with, you can only fit about let's say 1 Vita game and maybe 1 PSP game in it. 8 GB: A decent start and glad to see Sony bundling it with the Borderlands 2 Slim Bundle. I'd recommend getting this one if you want all physical games. 16 GB: If you want a decent mix of both digital and physical. 32 and 64 gb: If you have the cash go for it. I only recommend these two if you're like me and wanna go mostly digital as well as fit in some music for any game that allows an MP3 playback feature.
I'm perfectly okay with the card only working for the vita, but that still doesn't explain the ridiculous prices. They could had done that and still not charge these ridiculous prices.
I had to import a 64 gig card from Japan for 100 bucks......... in 2016... I pay 100 bucks for 64 gigs of memory.... I guess it's my fault for paying for it. still though god dammit Sony!
Not really. 10 bucks for a 4GB sd card is still overpriced. The Switch's memory cards go for at least 30 bucks but they hold a LOT more space (the cheapest ones hold at least 120 gigiablocks).
What's sad is that now for $100 (at least on Amazon) you can either get a 64gb vita card or a high end 256gb Full size SD card and still have $20 of pocket money left.
Not used mine for over a year, though I would have a look on the net for a new card thinking the price would have gone down by now. Now I remember why I stopped playing Vita lol
Controller prices are completely back-shit insane too. Where I live, a brand new PS4 game normaly costs between 500-550DKK, whereas a brand new Sony PS4 Controller costs 600DKK. I could get a new game to play with my friends, for the same price it costs me to have ONE additional friends playing with me.
I am thinking of getting a, psp vita but the memory cards in 2016 are still expensive 4gb is like 20/30 pounds, 16gb is like 40/50 and 32 is like 80 pounds then there si the 64 which is more than the fucking console itself. I have a 3DS XL that has a 32 gb sd card that cost me fuck all cost me like 15 pounds i also have like 4 other 8gb cards too like wtf sony get a fucking grip.
Thanks for making this video. My 3G Vita bundle comes with a 8GB memory card for 299.99USD. 8GB's will just have to do until the prices comes down on the 32GB card. Thank you for paving the way for Vita + memory card bundles.
3 years from this vid. Just got a new ps vita with adventure pack and 8gb mc. Was hoping to download FFVIII when I got home BUT NO!!!! The adventure pack takes up the whole memory card. I dont care if the memory cards are made from nanotechnolgy!!!! A 1cm piece of plastic should never cost this much. A blatant rip of if you can get 1terabytes standard harddrive at same price. DISGRACE! Fuck sony pricing!
this is one of the reasons why the psvita failed which is sad because i actually love my vita but the sony exclusive memory cards just baffled my mind why couldnt they just have SD card support?idk...
I completely agree, I've held off on buying anymore games then I already have due to the amount of memory I'm scraping from from my 8GB. Hopefully they cave around Christmas since the Vita isn't doing well over here in the states, it'd be a huge push to sell more units with all the great software coming out in November and December. It's a damn shame, but the Vita has some great games and even more coming in the holiday season.
Well, you could actually get 4 brand new games at opening price, because the opening price was $120, and brand new vita games USUALLY cost $30 at retail (They can cost even less).
Classified Chappy I just don't see why some companies keep thinking it's better to make storage cards like flash drives and memory cards smaller and smaller and smaller in size. All it does is make it easier to lose.
Oᑎᕮ ᔕᕼOT, Oᑎᕮ KIᒪᒪ Yeah I definitely agree to you right there. That would be the worst thing ever if those stick games gets lost even the memory cards where man it is so bullshit buying another one. Heard that if you are a ps plus member, it'll take up mostly wherever memory card you using which is another reason everyone are screwed still. I hate Sony....
Vita's a great system. I just go incredibly lucky with it. $180 for the Assassin's Creed Liberation Bundle + a 4GB MS + PlayStation All Stars + 30 days of PS+. Then I got a 16GB MS for $30. More than worth it!
Hi AlphaOmegaSin, just for you to know, here in Europe the prices will be much cheaper. Here they are: 4GB: € 19,99 8GB: € 34,99 16GB: € 49,99 So, I think there is something weird going on with USA prices.
alphaomegasin is right and it shows in the numbers even now. comparing the global sales totals of the vita to the 3ds as of march 31st 2012.global #of units sold within that week. vita 71,155. the 3ds 234,109.
Funny thing is, 'they' don't have to make an SD card adapter. There's already a perfectly good PSVita card reader built into the PS Vita, that comes bundled with a USB cord you can easily attach to your PC.
Correction: The memory cards used in the PSP are actually used in most SONY electronics products (Memory Stick DUO), even today's cameras/camcorders. After my PSP quit, I used the 2GB one I had (Big at the time), using it in a camera.
in Australia, because the price is double of what ever the American prices are, the PSVITA is only sold in a few places (usually WI-FI only) and not everywhere has all the games (maybe 1 or 2) and the only memory card you will find is 4gb for $30-35, so in total the price of every thing all together (wi-fi psvita, 1 game, and 4gb memory stick) is about $500 (and if its the 3G/Wi-Fi model $600). ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME!!!!
My sister’s friend gave me their vita(that they got from another friend a few years before. These memory cards have barely gone down a few dollars in price a decade after release. Like, holy shit.
You know what's worse? Even though the Vita uses mini-cartridges like the DS and 3DS now, you still need to save to a memory card. THEY DIDN'T PUT INTERNAL MEMORY ON THE GAMES! I could understand for digital downloadable games, but physical retail games!? This is ludicrous!
I held out on a 3DS and a price drop emerged rather quickly. I'm holding out on a Vita to see what happens. I think these prices are absurd right now and turn me off from wanting the product right away.
I was planning to get a 4 GB for $20 at Target because when I reserved and bought my Vita there I got a $20 gift card. But, they gave me a 4 GB memory card when I got it. So if you want a pretty good deal, go to Target. They also have buy 2 Vita games, get 1 free. So getting Wipeout 2048, FIFA, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss with a Wi-Fi Vita for just around $340.
If people manage to make custom cartridges for booting pirated NDS games, then the Vita's memory card is gonna be a cakewalk. Hell, it's looks a bit like a micro SD card, pretty sure a modified SD card reader can read it.
So you have to pay a boatload for a big enough card or delete a re-download over their garbage Wi-Fi chip in the Vita. no one has come up with a solution yet?
an adaptor will be made so quickly for these memory cards, u are totally right! even back in the 90's there were companies making these for systems with memory cards like N64. Google the DexDrive to see what i mean
The reason why they make/use a proprietary memory card is so that you CAN'T use any other card; like an SD card or micro SD card which you can buy a 64gb card for around 5 bucks on ebay. Sony made it so that you HAVE TO buy it from them, otherwise you can't use it.
Great video. I am from the UK and the 16gb are around £33 cheapest. I also got a free 4gb memory card, plus fifa football for only £15 when i bought my ps vita of amazon.
@AllieRX87 I was wondering that for awhile, figure most self contained games like that have the ability to save right to them. You figure Gameboy, Gameboy Color, GBA, DS, 3DS, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Game Gear all had that ability, yet this can't?
I have a feeling this is so expensive because they will be selling the Vita at a loss. Think about it, the specs of the Vita this day and age are pretty insane. I'd imagine they would be taking a hit with each console produced. The memory cards are their way to make a large profit off of something cheap.
Man... I still haven't got a Vita yet. Maybe I might get it on Christmas. Sure, Sony said Vita cost about $249.99(Wi-Fi) and $299.99 (3G+Wi-Fi) during 2011 E3, but it cost extra, too, like Memory Card + Games. D:
i just paid 97 $ for a 64 gb card and bought the ps vita. i really don't like how they overprice their cards it's ridiculous. but either i buy a memory card from them or skip buying the ps vita. cause without the a huge memory card you can't enjoy your time on the vita to it's maximum. Alot of people holding on to a 8 gb card is constantly unhappy. always deleting games to try new ones. it's barely okay that they have there own cards but do they have to price them that damn much just so they can make money out of us? cause like you said it does not cost so much to manufacture a memory card, it's costs to much even on micro sd cards. to make a memory card even with huge memory card costs a couple of dollars. Please sony stop robbing gamers it's 2014 now...
It kinda combats piracy because for a hacked ps vita you would need more than a 32g gb card, it's not a question of not being able to use it in other systems. But then again, overpricing the cards just makes life more difficult for whoever intends to actually buy games.
im glad I waited. Im buying a psvita for black Friday and gamestop is now selling 16gb for 34 bucks sooo...I'll buy 1 now and a second one later when I need it :) I REALLY want a vita...I haven't wanted a handheld this bad since gba.
the 16 and 32 gb memory cards have dropped $20,the 8 gb ,memory has dropped $10 and the 4 gb memory card has dropped $5 from the last updated price,IMO it still hasnt dropped nearly enough to be worth while but its alot better from its original prices
Think I'll wait until there's either a price drop or I can get a cheaper 3rd party one before buying a Vita now. Was looking forward to Uncharted and would probably have got it on launch. Hopefully they'll drop the price before launch. As you say, it's particularly annoying because we know it costs them buttons to make.
Try to think this way. The reason a lot of companies are trying to prevent piracy is because people are stealing their work that cost millions of dollar to produce by not paying for it. In return those companies don't make as much to cover the cost of the production. So thats why company like sony is making their own memory not only try to combat piracy but by charging more for the memory card they might be able to make up the lost by charging it more because it is mandatory to purchase to play.
$2 a gb is definitely a bit of a rip off, but not as much as the suggested retail price. And yes, it was worth it. Because now, I can play all of my PSP games / homebrews with two memory sticks, an amazing screen, and I have all of the great features of the Vita hardware.
I bought a Vita, but i do agree with the outrageous prices for the memory cards. The Vita itself is great for portable gaming, but i only have a 8gb memory card for my vita and have almost no memory left on it to save my games. I got my memory card for free
If you can make a wired connection to a PS3 with a Vita, then you can probably connect it to a PC. It's called "Universal" Serial Bus for a reason. All you need is a little XML knowledge and some free time to connect the software. 1. Connect Vita to PC via cable. 2. Crack into the OS. 3. Write a program to read/write Vita programming. 4.????? 5.PROFIT
I reluctantly bought a 16gb card in 2013 and filled it up quick. 5 years later I have not bought a new card out of frustration. I still play the games I have on it but I would have bought a lot more games! The remote play and cross play were also advertised to go along with the ps3. Remote play dodnt happen til ps4 and cross play waa limited!! I have purchased a ps1,2,3, psp and ps vita. Being very patient to purchase new console. Seriously considering switching to microsoft!!
The memory stick pro duo sticks (16GB) at Wal Mart are $80. The 32GB Vita stick is $100. To me that reasonable. And yes, I bought one for my Vita already. :)
Even if SD cards were the same size, price, and just running slower speeds, they would STILL be more useful than a Vita memory card, because I can use them on anything.
I'm interested in getting the vita, because I wanna play some indie games on the go, but hopefully they announce a whole new optimize system and memory cards at gamescom. at a cheaper price.
i know that vita memory cards are really expensive but i also heard that games that are downloaded at the ps store are going to be 40% cheaper than normal price so new games are gona be $26
It feels strange to watch this after so many years. My overpriced mem card died few days ago. In 2016 hackers found out that every vita, including 1K one has around 4 gigs of memory, 2 of which could be usable to customer. What they did with 2k was just setting aside 1 gig. And pirates did find workaround anyway. Like you predicted :D. And prices... they are still high.
Hey Alphaomegasin, you should make another rant about how the vita's still doesn't have full remote play and how it still can't play online videos and how it's still can't play all the psp game etc etc.... i could make a video but your way better at this rant stuff than I am... thanks Bud
Also to add on The Vita was launched Late in America,it was supposed to come out around December 2011 and delayed until Like February 2012,not enough Japanese Dev Support nor PSN developers, Only 3-5 Games worth getting, LBP Vita,Black Ops Declassified,AC3 Liberation, and maybe Persona 4 Golden, but to be honest 3ds is $125-$150 and even early this year the Black Ops Declassified Bundle was still $250 and it's ridiculous because the vita won't make it with these prices and lack of games, its sinkin
as of 10/26/2013 the price of a 32GB Memory Card for the PSVita is on sale for $72 + S&H, which according to the description is worth 8-16 gave saves.... seriously?? 8 to 16 game saves...? that is expensive shit right there! used to get a PS1 memory card that saved 8-16 games for like $20, WTF sony?? my fuck...
hahahah you won my subscribe. btw, with your predictions, wololo made a homebrew (called half-byte loader) for the ps vita that can play iso and cso games on it. look it up in GOOGLE, you sir are dead on with the prediction xD and its available for download RIGHT NOW.
You so could get rid of piracy, charge £5 for every download game, give away a 32GB card with every console and support titles after launch for free, pirates wouldn't bother with your machine. People pirate because they don't have enough money to buy games.
The memory card is a flash drive. Google what a flash drive is. New phones without contracts are like $400. They are only $200 if you agree to a 2 year contract. Which means you'll end up spending more than $400 in the long run. The Vita is more powerful than your phone, anyway, and cheaper too.
4 years later and the prices of the memory cards is still fucking ridiculous. Great logic, sony. Make your memory cards fucking expensive to "combat piracy." Good job, guys. Back in the day in 1996, I paid £20 for official 1MB PS1 Memory card.
Memory gets cheaper every year. I can get $1 for a 4 gig SD...time does change.

alphaomegasin is right and it shows in the numbers even now. comparing the global sales totals of the vita to the 3ds as of march 31st 2012.global #of units sold within that week. vita 71,155. the 3ds 234,109.
Funny thing is, 'they' don't have to make an SD card adapter. There's already a perfectly good PSVita card reader built into the PS Vita, that comes bundled with a USB cord you can easily attach to your PC.
It's $25 for the 4GB and $35 for the 8GB here at local Gamestop stores. Boston, MA
Correction:
The memory cards used in the PSP are actually used in most SONY electronics products (Memory Stick DUO), even today's cameras/camcorders.
And just like that every vita owner is tweeting this at sony
Alpha, I have lived in Australia for 25 years. I paid $69.95 for a 16GB Sony PlayStation Vita memory card.
Hell, it's looks a bit like a micro SD card, pretty sure a modified SD card reader can read it.
those prices are suggested prices the real price for 4GB is 19.99 if you can find one 30 for 8GB and 60 for 16GB and 100 for 32GB
All of them do work. Only a select bunch are on the Vita store, but almost all of them are on the PS3 Store
No shit
Prices have dropped down a bit but even so when compared to regular SD or MicroSD cards, they're still expensive.
Forgot to also include that Sandisk will create these and sell them for a lower price than Sony is selling it for.
But then again, overpricing the cards just makes life more difficult for whoever intends to actually buy games.
love your shirt dude
im glad I waited. Im buying a psvita for black Friday and gamestop is now selling 16gb for 34 bucks sooo...I'll buy 1 now and a second one later when I need it :) I REALLY want a vita...I haven't wanted a handheld this bad since gba.
Remember, this rant was almost two months before Vita's release. Now, you can get the memory sticks for a little less.
the 16 and 32 gb memory cards have dropped $20,the 8 gb ,memory has dropped $10 and the 4 gb memory card has dropped $5 from the last updated price,IMO it still hasnt dropped nearly enough to be worth while but its alot better from its original prices
This is one of the reasons why I won't be getting a Vita.
$2 a gb is definitely a bit of a rip off, but not as much as the suggested retail price. And yes, it was worth it. Because now, I can play all of my PSP games / homebrews with two memory sticks, an amazing screen, and I have all of the great features of the Vita hardware.
i subed for rants , I found a man who will.
It seems a lot of gaming companies are using the "piracy" excuse to overcharge their stuff. Amazing.
I bought a Vita, but i do agree with the outrageous prices for the memory cards. The Vita itself is great for portable gaming, but i only have a 8gb memory card for my vita and have almost no memory left on it to save my games. I got my memory card for free
what's funny is i just saw a Ps Vita advertisement right before this video
Nintendo did the best thing possible making the DSi/DS XL & 3DS compatible with standerd SD memory cards.
I remember how ridiculously priced PSP memory cards were at first but came down later.. I think Vita cards should be round half of what they are now..
You mentioned the Tales series. The Vita has two of those (Innocence R and Hearts R). You only have one (Abyss).
64GB SD card at Wal-Mart cost around $30.00 last time i saw it and it's not the cheap ones, it's the SanDisk kind
I'll get that for my 3DS
Looking at your game library makes me regret selling all of my old school games. Man should have kept them.
i know that vita memory cards are really expensive but i also heard that games that are downloaded at the ps store are going to be 40% cheaper than normal price so new games are gona be $26
It's funny that Sony thinks they can boost sales by "combating" piracy, yet hacking was one of the selling points of the PSP.
Hey Alphaomegasin, you should make another rant about how the vita's still doesn't have full remote play and how it still can't play online videos and how it's still can't play all the psp game etc etc.... i could make a video but your way better at this rant stuff than I am... thanks Bud
Also to add on The Vita was launched Late in America,it was supposed to come out around December 2011 and delayed until Like February 2012,not enough Japanese Dev Support nor PSN developers, Only 3-5 Games worth getting, LBP Vita,Black Ops Declassified,AC3 Liberation, and maybe Persona 4 Golden, but to be honest 3ds is $125-$150 and even early this year the Black Ops Declassified Bundle was still $250 and it's ridiculous because the vita won't make it with these prices and lack of games, its sinkin
as of 10/26/2013 the price of a 32GB Memory Card for the PSVita is on sale for $72 + S&H, which according to the description is worth 8-16 gave saves....
seriously?? 8 to 16 game saves...? that is expensive shit right there! used to get a PS1 memory card that saved 8-16 games for like $20, WTF sony?? my fuck...
It has a usb port as far as i know, so you will probably be able to access the memory card through that....
hahahah you won my subscribe. btw, with your predictions, wololo made a homebrew (called half-byte loader) for the ps vita that can play iso and cso games on it. look it up in GOOGLE, you sir are dead on with the prediction xD and its available for download RIGHT NOW.
To rub it in to $ony you can DL that shit straight on to Vita XD...!
@Bellamyfanboy According to the conversion rate:
4gb= £19.18
8gb= £28.70
16gb= £44.74
32gb= £76.69
You so could get rid of piracy, charge £5 for every download game, give away a 32GB card with every console and support titles after launch for free, pirates wouldn't bother with your machine. People pirate because they don't have enough money to buy games.
@ AlphaOmegaSin
Intelligent and funny is a rare combined talent, keep up the good work :o)
The memory card is a flash drive. Google what a flash drive is. New phones without contracts are like $400. They are only $200 if you agree to a 2 year contract. Which means you'll end up spending more than $400 in the long run. The Vita is more powerful than your phone, anyway, and cheaper too.
