I've read only a few bunch of volumes, concluded Motorball Arc. Manga has a lot of weirdness already in those, but oh boy, this is wilder than any JoJo!
I love the adventure of robo Pinoko in cyberpunk Berserk its literally everything I ever wanted to make.throw away any Notions of right and wrong and live
I had a copy of Wizard Magazine growing up (I think it was #81, May 1998 issue) that featured Battle Angel Alita in its anime section. All I remember is it described the roller death sport that Alita competes in where fans would stick their limbs into the course just so their favorite racer would cut them off as they sped by. Gnarly.
If this series got the Jojo or Baki anime treatment it would be just as popular as those. I always wondered why nobody mentions the manga very much. Guess I gotta read it all™
I feel like it would be impossible to adapt, it just takes too many hard turns and some of the valleys last a bit too long. I would absolutely kill for it to be adapted though, especially if they could give it the New Baki treatment and just start from where it's the most fun.
@@TheBellman Seems James Cameron also has the anime rights because I remember reading the mangaka saying he would be all in for an anime adaptation but the rights won't allow it.
I don't agree it's still ON-going, it's just on. It's like a Tezuka manga recycling characters, it just HAPPENS they want to also keep on with the name and the "canon" because that's just the flavor of this IP. The artistic purpose of the different sereis is no different than something like TMNT 2006 or whenever CGI film was "ongoing" with the TMNT theatrical movies.
I read all of the original manga back in 2018, then stopped shortly after getting into Last Order. I binge read it so at that point I was feeling rather burned out from the story feeling it jumped the shark maybe. Holy shit was I wrong. Whenever you think this manga has surprised you they find a bigger crazier shark to jump over. Time to reread it all
By the time you get to Mars Chronics the turns get absolutely WILD. Like you get wrapped up in some dude's mashup of Man in the Iron Mask and Count of Monte Cristo for multiple volumes.
what I absoluetly adore about battle angle alita is that not only does it have these fucking wack as all hell moments like you're describing, it does so all the while it's genuinly saying something quite powerfull, not that the "what even is humanity?" theme hasn't been beated to death in sci-fi already, but I still think Alita comments on it in a very compelling manner
The ZOT was absolutely phenomenal! This arc is just peak manga for me, and to this day, the only thing that can top it in my heart is HxH Chimera Ants Arc. Gunnm Last Order content is incredibly diverse while still staying true to the Cyberpunk genre, I just don't understand how people can dislike it. It is certainly due in part to the fact that there is sometimes very long periods between chapters, and at some point it was even hard finding scanlation for it. Also it never had a proper anime adaptation, but look at Berserk, Bastard!, The Boys, and Invincible all these IP have gained popularity in recent years and the Cyberpunk genre as well with many games. So I have hope for when the economy bounce back, we'll get good adaptation of Classic like Akira, Berserk, Gunnm, Gantz, Claymore and more.
More than read it, it's my first complete collection from my library. In this version it's called Gunnm like in the original, also using the protagonist's original name, so much so that it took me years to call Gally Alita
You know, I’ve read Last Order specifically twice. And when I saw the title, I was like, “What? Battle Angel Alita isn’t that weird.” And then you started talking… Quite a lot of things in that series to which I must’ve just said, “Ok, that exists”
yeah shit gets crazy once the story stops taking place on earth but gets pretty tame again in thee newest series on mars which is kinda like a prequel to everything but afaik
I managed to find links to the free online copies of the first two series, but there were a mix of the old and new english translations (Alita and Tiphares, and then Gally and Zalem, and then back to the first one) so that messed with me a little but no big deal, since most of the volumes used the old translation. I’m still trying to find free online copies to mars chronicle though, can’t wait to read the first volume. Edit: the name “Sechs” is german for “six” and is pronounced “zegs”
Man i love alita, its the only sci fi series in manga that does the whole fusion of seriousness with comedy and absurdism, its like a sci fi dorohedoro(im aware it came first) or gintama in space(technically gintama is already sci fi)
I'll assume you're form the USA... why is that whenever something isn't popular with you guys you conclude "it not known in THE WEST"? Ask people in Spain, France, Argentina or Germany if they don't know the manga that's been published, sold, reprinted and well read for years. Of course it's not as famous as the big, flashy and uber-promoted shonen titles everyone and their grandma have heard about; but don't speak for "the west" just because folks in the US don't talk as much of it as they do about Bleach.
Battle angel alita is a great series that is pretty underrated last order is a good pretty read my favorite parts of the series has to alita backstory and this series truly needs more love from throughout when the third part is completely done i will read from start to finish but honestly keeping up with chapters is such a board but all in all battle angel alita would be a good full on remake to follow whole the manga series
It might not have had any traction in the US, but in France and lot of other European countries, it has a cult following, nearly similar to Akira. It's one of the earliest manga that had been translated in France, around 93, 94, and it's been cherished there ever since. The first arc of 9 tomes simply titled Gunnm (Battle Angle Alita in the US) is by far the best one, at least storytelling and philosophically wise. The subsequent arcs (the space tournament and the Mars Chronicles) is just Kishiro goofing off, because the first arc took him so many years, and was so dark that it sent him straight into depression for a few years (that, and having been through a major accident that traumatized him), so he had to take a major hiatus. After having spent a decade far away from the project, he could finally get back to it with fresh eyes, but by then, the depressive, borderline nihilistic young adult had matured into a somewhat normal older adult, so as his drawings skills had improved from leaps and bounds, his storytelling also kinda became a bit dull, or at least tamed and muted, compared to his early work. But at the same time, you can tell he's now actually having fun drawing the series, which was probably not the case on the first arc. So good on him.
First 9 volumes (Part 1) are straight upamazing but don't have any payoffs. Then when Part 2 came out and paypffs were imminent they didn't answer any questions there either and instead went to Tournament Arc.deck A disappointing turn of events for me.
This video is sort of a spoiler, so i suggest u read the manga right from the start first. Battle Angel Alita (this is where the live action film took material from), then Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, and then Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle
I only ever read up to the point where she dies and turns into a city or some shit idk i havent thought about this in years but what the fuck I have not heard of any of this how much more aelita is there
ngl, the 2nd part is offputing. The 1st part is really cool. Liked the artstyle, the stakes escalation, the plot and the MC grew into me. The 2nd part replaces the plot for a tournament, which is a downgrade imo. The characters became goofier and goofier which took away the seriousness of the series. The tournament then gets hijacked by the vampire story, the supercomputer thing felt really convoluted and the tournament ends with a Deus Ex Machina. Even the artstyle and MC didn't have that charm from part 1, idk. It has been years since I put down the series after finishing Last Order, but I remember it from time to time. Personal tastes aside, it is indeed odd how, at the very least, part 1 hasn't got a propper adaptation.
I agree, I think Alita is honestly at it's best in the moments it has between the "who can macguffin each other the hardest" they call fight scenes, and the last order had way less of that than the original. I've been enjoying order from mars or whatever it's called a lot more than part 2 though, but it's still not as good as part 1
Oh come on! Jojo was animated and that way more weird than Alita. If Jojo can get an anime so can Alita! They both had OVA anime adaptations in the 90's too!
I almost didn't click on this.
I've read only a few bunch of volumes, concluded Motorball Arc. Manga has a lot of weirdness already in those, but oh boy, this is wilder than any JoJo!
Didn't like Motorball spinoff at the time but I think it added a lot of good background and vibes to the setting in retrospect.
I love the adventure of robo Pinoko in cyberpunk Berserk its literally everything I ever wanted to make.throw away any Notions of right and wrong and live
Robot Pinoko in Cyberpunk Berserk is a strangely accurate depiction of Gunnm I didn't know I needed. Thanks.

Battle Angel Alita is not real, it can't hurt you. Now GUNNM on the other hand...
This narration has early Max0r vibes and I am totally here for it, you know, despite what day it happens to be.
Idk about early max0r but me personally I almost thought I was watching a huggbees video 😭
If this series got the Jojo or Baki anime treatment it would be just as popular as those.

Ok its been years since ive read last order but holy shit, 3:26 that guy really does look like the corpus in warframe

GUNNM is described as Cyberpunk Berserk. 4:14 Cerulia is literally one of Dracula's wives by the way.
