    My first serious boyfriend was Iranian. He asked me to marry him when I was 18. I felt I was too young and said not now. I am so glad I did because over time he became very abusive. I eventually left him.

    My college boyfriend was Iranian in the early 90s. We were both studying Medicine in California. He never actually told me what his family did, but I know his father came from Political family and money was never a problem for him. He was VERY nice to me in the beginning and I almost married him. He always wanted a small wedding and he say that our honeymoon will be in Iran because we will be treated like VIP there.... I am so glad I didn't....

      Kaylee Almerzooq women have no rights there either BUT there is a US Embassy over there which is a huge difference. There’s no US Embassy in Iran so the United States has no power to help any AMERICAN there. But in Saudi Arabia, the US Embassy there would protect you. I would contact the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia about visiting. They should give you all the info you need. And, if and when you do visit, let the US Embassy know the dates of your stay in the country and where you’ll be staying. And they’ll keep track of you. Also, you should know where the US Embassy and all US Consulate buildings in Saudi Arabia are located. If anything happens, and it shouldn’t, but if anything did, you just need to get to the US Embassy. Once inside the US Embassy, past the gates, you’re officially on American soil (by local law) and the Saudi govt can’t touch you.
      You should be fine. But talk to the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia. That’s what they’re there for. If there was a US Embassy in Iran, the character in this movie would have been safe once she was on US Embassy property. But there wasn’t. Hence the two hour movie
      Rule of thumb: never travel to a country where there is no US Embassy. If there is no US Embassy, it’s because it is not safe and they have no authority to protect any Americans there. Most countries have a US Embassy unless it’s a country like Iran or North Korea

This is a domestic matter -- Betty did not like her husband or his values and he beats her-- that is family law and therefore under Iranian jurisdiction, especially since she is [automatically] an Iranian citizen. Therefore the embassy had no rights to give her asylum, as it is a domestic family law matter. Although her story is painful it is a family law matter under local laws, or all battered wives worldwide can be deemed refugees entitled to resettlement in the west.

By the time Betty and Mahtob made it home, they were homeless and penniless. So, whenever one of these critics talks about why it is Betty signed book and movie deals to cash in, that's part of it. This lady’s Israeli accent made my ears smile. Stunning scene: Betty walked in with her beautiful baby, certain they were safe. Well, we know it ends well. The book’s good. But she spelled the word “manteau” as “montoe.”Manteau is French for long cloak, it’s a borrow-word Persians sometimes say for “chador.” Book was co-written by same man who co-wrote Midnight Express, both are “page-turners.” I hope Americans who saw this movie don’t think all/most Persians are like this. Those wondering why the Swiss woman was so unhelpful and she could at least have given betty asylum in Switzerland, the answer is no she cannot. Asylum has to be in compliance with the International convention of refugees, i.e., for SPECIFIC reason like political persecution. Although her story is painful it is a family law matter (and also criminal law in some countries), subject to local laws, or all battered wives worldwide can be deemed refugees entitled to resettlement in the west.

    I never quite understood this part of the story. Betty went to the US section of the Swiss embassy. I thought, once you’ve entered the grounds of an embassy, you are no longer considered to be, for this example, in Iran. I wonder if the Swiss consulate must of had provisions placed on them to keep operating in Iran. At the end of the movie, Betty and her daughter went to the US embassy in Turkey and said the words, “We’re home”. Why wasn’t this applicable to the US section of the Swiss embassy in Iran? I would appreciate, if someone knows the answer to this situation.

    • @Vesnicie
      @Vesnicie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The Swiss Embassy has an American section because there is no American embassy. This is done in several cases, where one country will step in to some extent for the citizens of another, which does not have formal diplomatic ties. You could say that while they are in this embassy, they are in Switzerland, but since there are not Swiss, they cannot claim the rights of a Swiss citizen. I don't know the whole story or whether there wasn't more that the embassy might have done for them, but ultimately it wasn't technically their responsibility.

    To all the people and their negative comments towards Nicole : she was just doing her job. There was nothing she could do to help them. Everything she said was true. One thing the screenwriters omit is that Iran doesn't recognise dual citizenship and furthermore considers certain individuals Iranian citizens even when they themselves do not. For instance, if you are married to or are the child of an Iranian citizen (!) You are therefore bound by their strict laws and there is little other countries can do to assist you once you are in the country. Betty clearly had no idea of this and that is why Nicole asks why they came to the county.

      According to American law, Betty and Moody were recognized as having both American and Iranian citizenship.
