I think you confused London with New York when you said Blacklock City was between St Patrick's Cathedral and the Tower of London. I assume you meant St Paul's. 😁

I did! You caught me! It was our first afternoon. We were in New York City a few months ago, so that's probably where the name popped in my head from! We got to visit St. Paul's later in the video; and we enjoyed seeing it very much! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! 😁

The fish and chips looked dry and overcooked. Potatoes are grown in the UK but also come from Jersey that produce excellent, small new potatoes, best served with butter.

    • @shoretoshoretx
      @shoretoshoretx  หลายเดือนก่อน

  • @JohnResalb

Potatoes are grown in both UK and Ireland.
A dish with roast potatoes beats any fries you care to mention.
Yes, I agree with your commentator about your fish and chips - there are fish-and-chip places for tourists, and there are fish-and-chip places for locals.
Who do you think knows best where to go?
Fortnum & Mason - yes I have had afternoon tea there - one again, for down-to-earth locals, the nearest equivalent is probably Marks and Spencers where I get a selection of quarter sandwiches each with a totally different fresh filling, and tea of your choice.
We also have local independent tea-houses.
I'm a coffee drinker, but I STILL go there for my coffee - it's a different world to any kind of Starcrups chain!!!

    • @shoretoshoretx

I'd love to try Marks & Spencers! I could have had afternoon tea every day if I could afford it! 😁 Ryan preferred the food and experience at Fortnum & Mason, but I preferred our time at Claridge's. I'll have to prioritize getting roasted potatoes next time! Another commenter suggested the roasted new potatoes as well. Do you have a good suggestion for a fish & chips shop?

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip, you certainly did some awesome, (and pricey), things, but hey you only live once!

England alone has 68% of its land which is agriculture so probably English potatoes . Best place to get fish and chips is the coast all the seaside towns halesowen great fish and chips . Come back sometime and see more 😊

Kudos for pronouncing Thames correctly, and also for calling it "the River Thames", and not "the Thames River"! We do of course grow our own potatoes, although I think McDonald's states that their fries are made from British and Irish potatoes!

Thanks! We tried our best!😁 Thanks for answering our question about the potatoes. Interesting about McDonald's. We did grab a quick meal at a McDonald's one night because we were in a hurry. Jaffa Cakes are called cakes for a legally defined reason. USA people tend not to like them due to the more sophisticated blend of chocolate and orange and restricted sugar content, no doubt.

    • @shoretoshoretx
      @shoretoshoretx  หลายเดือนก่อน

I read about that after another commenter mentioned it. It was interesting to read about the process and attributes they used to determine it was a cake!
I remember having chocolate oranges growing up around Christmas time, but it's definitely not a common flavor profile here. And yes, our food is over-sugared! I noticed that with food in Europe for both salt and sugar. Our 10 year old nephew loved the Jaffa Cakes and finished the whole sleeve in no time!

The best Afternoon tea is probably at The Savoy, you will not even have to pour your own tea, the service is so personal. I agree with other comments, that Fish and Chips was not the best, trust me on that one, what you had was average at best. Great video and content 😊

Unlike meat, fish starts losing its flavour from the moment it's caught.
I checked two lists on Google - top 50 fish restaurants in UK and top 10 fish restaurants in UK.
Nearly ALL are at seaside towns with fishing ports (in US you'ld call it "nearly all are by the ocean").
This also confirms my own personal experience.
My local café makes a great fish lunch on Fridays for £9.
And his fish is well acceptable by my high standards.
I dont usually put roast potatoes with fish because the dish could be too dry.
I prefer mash potato with butter, and I also squirt a little garlic sauce into it, in that café where I go.
Most of US is far from the ocean, but I think you have river fish, do you not?
The river fish we have here is salmon, and it's almost exclusive to Scotland.
So, if you go there try the salmon.
But once again, check, because I would expect to find the best in the Scottish Highlands.
Smoked salmon is usually one of the sandwiches you'ld get for afternoon tea at Marks & Spencer.

    • @shoretoshoretx
      @shoretoshoretx  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I had read in my research that the best fish and chips were in seaside towns, so thanks for confirming that. Those mashed potatoes with garlic & butter sound delicious! We do have river fish in some areas. We used to live in Tennessee, and there you could get trout caught from the river. Now we live in Texas near the Gulf Coast. We can usually get some good fresh shrimp. We lived in Hawaii briefly and had the best fresh caught seafood! I love salmon, so we'll make sure to have that in Scotland.

We did do a lot of walking! I looked back at my steps from that week, and we averaged about 17,800 steps a day. One thing we learned pretty early into the trip is that using the CityMapper app was a lot more reliable in Europe than Google maps in deciding on tube, train, and bus routes. Google Maps had a lot of misses the first day on road closures and arrival/departure times, so that would be one tip I'd share.

Instead have a look at some maps like a food map which will take you to all the places where food came from like Cheddar Gorge in Somerset (Cheese), Cornwall (Pasties and Clotted Cream Tea), Gloucester (Cheese and Pork) etc there's so many more places which won't be so touristy busy and will be easier to access.

Very touristy places, but then, that's how it is on your first trip.
But getting to mingle with the locals requires going to places where locals live.
And this brings to question - what about outside London?
You'ld need to bring your Britrail pass with you (payable only in dollars and in the US), or you could rent a car (if you're OK going around hundreds of roundabouts and all on the left side of the road!).
I've met people just two hours away by train who have never been to London, and others who have been just once in their life (usually to a rock concert or football match at Wembley).
So, there's another world out there where the locals are waiting to show you THEIR world.

Jaffa Cakes are not "mushy in the middle"😮!? How very dare you missname them as cookies, sir?!! The clue is in the name. Jaffa CAKES. Dark chocolate in the top of the 'orangey bit' under the chocolate, on top of _sponge_cake_. _NOT_ cookies.
    Cakes go _hard_ when stale.
...cookies / biscuits go _soft_ when stale. Jaffa Cakes seldom go stale as we - who love them - eat them _before_ the chance would otherwise occur to become stale!!
_Scone_ is pronounced to rhyme with _gone_ - end of story!
("shone" also rhymes with _gone_ btw!) 👍😊 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💜🇬🇧🙂🖖

Thanks for the pronunciation tips! Yes, others have informed us about the Jaffa Cakes and that it is even legally considered a cake. Thanks for watching!

We've actually had fish & chips here at a pub in Houston that were just as good! We looked for something fast. We were so hungry after not eating at the Tower of London. Do you have any recommendations for next time we're in the UK? Thanks for watching!

Watch TH-cam Gary Eats, he goes all over the country but has some real cracking places in London for when you next visit. He is a great genuine guy and is very fair with his critics.

London is just a tourist trap that will cost you 4 times the price to stay there for 5 days than almost everywhere else in the uk! My advice would be is to fly into the uk to another destination and stay there and just jump on a train to london for a day. Cheap city to stay with lots of tourism history and things to do is liverpool and also only 30 minutes from Manchester airport and 3 hours in the train to london. Gaurentee it will save you half the cost of london. For example sunday roast in london £25 and sunday roast in loverpool £10-£15 pint of beer in london £9 pint of the same beer on liverpool £4.

This sounds like great advice for helping the budget when traveling to the area. Thankfully, we had credit card points that we used for our hotel on this trip. While we enjoyed seeing the sights in London, we both agreed that next time we'd like to see parts of the UK outside of London! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your advice!

@@shoretoshoretx I'm glad you enjoyed london. UK has alsorts to offer and if I was you look into the price of rail card deals because if you stay in a city with a main railway station in the centre of the uk then you can travel to most of the uk in 3 hours or less. I suggested liverpool because of all the history and things to do for free for example most amount of free world class museums outside of london and also the safety and friendly people plus it's got a kick ass food scene and nightlife to cater for everyone. York is also lovely but very limited and can be seen in a day.

Liverpool sounds like a really fun city to visit! And maybe a good place to be a base for day trips to other places. We did use the trains to take some short day trips to Hampton Court and Windsor from London, and it was so easy to travel that way! Another commenter also suggested York as I nice place to visit. I'm putting together my list for next time!

The Hubris that you think as first time travellers to London you have found the best things to do in London. Oh boy. Did you walk past the globe? Did you , is that you having had a good experience? You didn’t think to go inside, not for a performance, but just to go inside to see what the seating arrangements are like. You know you could do that for free?
And you saw the London eye, you ,didn’t think to ride on the eye?
Then you went for a Chain restaurant for lunch? And you thought it was “ neat “ that that they stopped for prayer on the hour. What a disgusting thing to say about a practice that has go on for over a thousand years undisturbed. Can’t you even imaging the history of the faith behind that. I gave up after “ neat “ was such a dreadful word to use .
Just to say London is not Disney land and the very religious practices that you deemed “ neat” are important. I am not even a religious person but I would never describe a religious practice as neat.
    Fed up with you

Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to watch what you did. We're still learning to express our thoughts well when filming, so we apologize if our word choice was offensive. Honestly, as a Christian who does not come from a liturgical religious tradition, I was having a difficult time conveying my thoughts and reflections about the hourly prayer in the moment as we filmed as it was a meaningful and emotional experience for me that I wasn't quite sure how to share with others yet. I should have taken the time to process my thoughts more before turning on the camera. We hope to grow as people and as content creators, so we will receive your feedback and take it into consideration as we plan and film our future travels.
Thank you for letting us know the tip that we can go into the Globe for free! I did not know that. If you have any other places we should visit next time, please share! Apparently, we need better fish & and chips, too! 😁
We had a great time in London and hope to visit again in the future!

A bit harsh, don't you think? I will admit to having watched some terrible vlogs of Americans visiting London and the UK, which are liberally peppered with misinformation and a condescending attitude. This most definitely is not one of those vlogs.

I often put milk in tea! Sometimes, I notice that some teas are recommended without milk. I almost always put sugar in my tea. Is that common in the UK? Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
