Thirteen years after his mother took her own life as a ritual sacrifice for the Black Mass, samurai Kyoshiro (Masakazu Tamura), who lives his life with his eyes turned away from happiness, uses his beloved sword to slay his enemies who come at him.....
This drama series was produced by Kansai Television and Toei and was aired from October 3, 1972 to March 27, 1973 on Fuji Television. Based on the original work of Shibata Renzaburo, Tamura Masakazu, who was recommended for the main character’s role by the author himself, played a swordsman with a lonely shadow on his back, a role that overturned his previous image and became one of his best-known works. The kaleidoscopic use of sword fights, the tantalizing touch of eroticism and unique storyline are sure to capture the hearts and minds of viewers! The 6th episode "Tearing Woman in the Night "co-stars Tamura Takahiro, Masakazu’s older brother, and Tamura Ryo, his younger brother.

Here’s the paradox. A person who only lives in the present is never sad or lonely. You can only be sad or lonely when you regret your past or fear your future.
This show is great, but it is not very Zen.
"the picture crossing lyoshiros mind,..., was sad and lonely" no paradox there.
The dude was conceived by r*pe in a sat@n!c ritual and what is working in him giving him his special technique and sixth sense perception isn't Zen. It's hellfire. Thus, while he intends to do good he always ends up leaving a pile of unalive bodies behind.
Light and darkness blur and often get twisted. That's not a paradox, that's the result of his true nature.
His life is cursed in that he can't fall in love with woman as they will die. And he has a terrible childhood. So he is always alone and has no friend and no future.
Nemuri is always sad and lonely. Just because you live in the present doesn't mean you're inevitably well all the time. In this case it is quite the opposite. Plus, no matter what the memories of past actions don't just disappear. Nor do the consequences.
And no, this show isn't about Zen at all. Don't forget what forces let to Nemur's conception. THAT'S what driving him. And that's why he always ends up offing countless people on every episode, oftentimes engaging himself in situations that are none of his business.

Just how long can He go on! No matter how much you hide your emotions, caring, it will come back, and it will ruin you! Human beings are not made to be like a lifeless soul. You may not believe me; in the end.
Judging others just diminishes yourself. We all have our reasons be they right or wrong. This character is a flawed anti-hero. I guess you haven't seen much of his series.

Obviously he hasn’t in real life been through all that but his character that he’s playing - has.
