    I'd go with just a cam, lifters, bearings and an oil pump if you haven't installed a new one. If you've already done rings, etc and don't have any other problems go with the least new parts. At the very least split the case and put eyes on what's going on in there. You could also have crank and cam bearing wear, or maybe even bearing journal wear on the cam and crank themselves. Best to know for certain what you'll need.

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason, I'm definitely leaning towards going through the engine either way. I don't want to waste money by replacing things recklessly, but also want to cross the engine off the to-do list forever. Lots of decisions to be made soon.

    Since I've been subscribed you've inspired me to watch ads for corvairs for sale! You're videos are great... informative and well produced. I even went back and watched all the T-bird videos.
    You've done so much to this car I don't see how you can quit now especially if you don't feel comfortable selling it as is. My vote; drop the engine, tear it down, hope the jugs, pistons, rings, didn't get damaged. Replace cam and crank bearings and hop it up as much as your budget allows. Good luck!

    You've done so much work to that engine, I don't thing a full teardown is necessary. Cam and lifters and re-install is all it need then that's all it should get.

    • @AutoAnatomy

      Probably so, but I'm concerned about metal going through the engine. If the cam did wear down further, it's likely that other things could have been damaged in the process.

    Hello Sean. Even though I subcribed because of the 66 T-bird series, I really appreciate your work on the old Corvair. There seems to be many Corvair owners that would benefit from seeing how to do the repairs as good as you do them. If you have the time and finances, I would bet that you want to do the repairs. I vote for the engine tear down and replace what is needed.

    Through your videos, I am reliving my youth where I had a 1963 Corvair Monza 2 door coupe. We started our relationship with the engine in the trunk and a kind neighbor who wanted to get rid of it for a song. I would like to see you put a new cam in it, however just like a VW case split, you will have to line bore the case after you split it. I don't know many shops that will do that any more, except Porsche shops ($$$$). I haven't checked the manual yet, but I think there is a way to replace the cam without having to split the case. But your preview shows a split case...

    I’ve had basically the exact same problem with my 63. It’s got a 65 engine in it and no matter what it popped and smoked from the exact same issue. Thankfully, we’ve been rebuilding an engine so we’re just gonna swap the whole thing. One Corvair guy I talked to just keeps two engines and swaps them rotationally instead of tuning them up in the car 😅

    A nagging problem that is particular to all dual carb corvairs, is that long bolt that goes through the entire carb. If you tighten that too much you will warp the top of the carb and your mileage will suffer. because you will have internal leaks and misalignments of internal parts. you can check the carbs with a straight edge. If they (carb tops) are bent you will have to replace them.

    I have been subscribed to your channel for quite some time now. I like the late model Corvair, sad that GM didn't support its development . The dilemma is either fix it or sell it - it's not an easy decision.
    Is this a car that you will keep for along time, after you have repaired it?
    Do you consider it has sufficient safety equipment, brakes and performance for today's driving conditions for you and your family?
    Does the Corvair have air conditioning to keep you comfortable in your climate ?
    Would you remove and repair the existing engine over a period of weeks (months) and reinstall it?
    Or would you buy a used engine to install in the car with the idea of driving the Corvair and then selling the used engine when you have repaired your own engine?
    I have read your replies and I think you have made up your mind. I hope it all works out well for you Sean. Good luck.

    • @AutoAnatomy
      @AutoAnatomy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thank you so much for being a long-time supporter! I wish that GM would have devoted some additional support to this platform, they're such good cars (with a little love).
      To answer your questions:
      1. We will not be keeping the car long-term, as I want to sell and help bring more back to life.
      2. Currently working on addressing the safety issues like brakes and suspension, to allow it to be safely driven on today's roads and speed limits.
      3. No AC, it was an option but not on this car.
      4. Remove and repair current engine over a short order, hopefully
      5. I'd love to have another engine to put in temporarily so we can keep driving, but don't have one currently. If I were to find a cheap engine, that might be an option.
      Thanks again for all your support!

    Well I’m a fix it guy but this if you can get a good used engine it’s a tough decision. You could also pull the jugs and piston off complete without pulling the piston
