  • I talk a lot about the Split Grip drill to help players get a feel for how you direct the momentum of the club from the transition at the top of your swing through the downswing and running into the ball.
There are many ways to teach the golf swing. This video will give you one major difference in swing philosophy that I teach versus many prominent instructors out there.

Mike , you won’t read this but I need to tell ya’ , I had a major breakthrough today in the snow in Alb. NM at my outside net. I’ve hit balls before w / the split grip but not well because I didn’t do the bump the shaft or tip - over , but today it clicked ! Now , I’m slinging the the shaft and club head of my driver at the ball almost feeling I’m going left through the ball . I knew this was correct but couldn’t do it just thinking about going left . Also I’m keeping the club outside my hands and it front of me on the backswing which the split grip does ! All of your videos have helped me to understand the swing like never before even as a 25 year Teaching Professional . Thanks Mike ! John

I finally now understand what Mike means by momentum, and again it's pure wisdom! As your arms move down without the "bump" the club head wants to go down and behind...plain and simple it wants to fall down straight down from the top. Gravity. And that's obviously going to get the club stuck behind you without the "bump". Other options us amateurs do is swing from the shoulders, (which we do subconsciously to avoid getting stuck), but the only result of that is the dreaded slice. The Malaska Move is Magic!

Mike struggled today on course. And remembered this drill coming in. Made a huge difference. Always seem to slip into same swing faults and try different things and just get worse. I'm never going to forget this from now on. I may stamp it on my bag or ball to remind me. Thanks for the great advice.

This is so profound, it is life changing. The split grip drill - I knew of this for a long time and occasionally did it, but did not fully understand the release that it teaches you. For most of my golf career I have been doing what I call a 'swat release' which is also a flip / fly swat action - what this does is put the club outside the plane and then brings it back out-to-in, forcing the left arm out of the way and causing a chicken wing. Also, lots of thin shots and topped shots. The split grip drill teaches the right hand what to do to release the club - for me it's a feeling of pointing the toe of the club down into the ground - or punching the right arm down from the right shoulder - straightening it. Result? Absolutely pure ball strike with very little effort. Also, the way that you bring the toe down to some extent will dictate how the shot is shaped. But this drill teaches the proper wrist hinge, both left and right. And there is no 'roll' either, like Mike says... Once you start pointing the toe down, the release happens naturally and you end up in that finish position with the toe of the club pointing up again.

I have used this drill to strike the ball a lot straighter. It has really helped me out. Thanks Mike!

This makes a bunch of sense to me. Gravity only works in one direction.
Momentum is mass multiplied by velocity. So to get the head moving in the correct trajectory a small amount of 'lateral' force is all that needed d early in the downswing. I do like the way Mike explains it here,(This is teaching)

Your quick mentioning of how hockey player hits a slap shot and seeing how Jonathan Taylor demonstrates the split handle drill changed my life. I’m 14-15 on a real track and I’m telling you my swing has taken the biggest leap ever. The only thing.... lol... is the way you describe the downswing and getting the club to square up is out there. Just take the split grip and trace it down to the ball. Putting a club down on your toe line will show anyone how the club goes straight down and not out and over. That will simultaneously make the left shoulder go up and behind you perfectly on plane

This drill helped me a bunch. I was always a good hitter in baseball so doing this drill made me want to go back to the baseball grip approach as opposed to the interlocking approach. I even tried doing baseball grip with a small amount of space between my hands as a split grip but obviously not split so far like this drill and it feels so strong at impact. Not sure if theres really any downside to me continuing that grip? However it just makes a ton of sense to me and feels good.

Interesting, just watched Duval basically demonstrate the Malaska move as way to not flip, etc. And Charlie said he never heard anyone give that advice before. Interesting.

Great video , but question here , lots of people talk about golf club behind the hand, how to feel it if "bump" it?

  • @tomwaite5498

On full shots...the Split Grip allows my right hand to control the clubface through impact...to either turn the club over and draw the ball or hold on and fade the ball. It's magical how the Split Grip allow you to work the ball. Here's another benefit everyone...use the Split Grip around the green. Oh my gosh...the Split Grip makes the Flop Shot soooo easy...just slide that right hand rapidly under the ball while maintaining that open face...and that ball shoots up like a rocket. And when chipping...at impact...add a little right hand release...to get the ball to run to the cup...which is the secret to all great chippers. When possible...always plan to have some run-out with the majority of your shots around the green...for the ball to always release quit a bit to the hole. Billy Casper taught this concept to Seve..and Seve taught this concept to Tiger. Watch Tiger hit sand shots...there is always a release...a run out with the ball. Seve's bunker shots always had release. I'm just saying...with the Split Grip...it's so much easier to create this release to the ball or a hold-block-fade action through impact. Play 2 weeks with the Split Grip. I really believe you'll lower your score...and have more fun shaping your shots like Bubba.

I grew up playing both hockey and golf. Love this drill, but I can't say I've ever thought about needing a bump to get the club on plane coming down. It just happens for me. I also played a fair amount of tennis. I'm a lefty, so my golf swing is akin to hitting a backhand shot since I hit from the right side in both hockey and golf.

Me too. I find the right hand only drill tough to do because it's my off hand. I have no idea, really, how to throw right hand underhand. I want to start my swing by pulling from my left side.

Last season I switched to the baseball grip because it,s more secure and comfortable. Seems to work fine,. Is there any down side to this? I am phsyced for my second season with Mike's teachings.

I've been using the 10 finger grip for about 1 year and a half and I can't see any downside whatsoever. If anything, a random hook due to excessive use of the right hand, but that's just doing something you are not supposed to do anyway.

So the "bump" is a conscious outward tipping or manipulating of the shaft on the downswing? Gotta admit, that is a tough concept to grasp, Mike.

  • @marklucey1
    @marklucey1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Mike. Are you happy then with a very steep / vertical shaft in transition and downswing? So many coaches are teaching to lay the shaft down / shallow it and let the COM of the club drop way behind and under. And they have multiple videos of tour pros doing it.Its just a bit confusing is all - you say hands down clubbed out and others say hands out clubbed back.

I’ve been working getting club bumped out like that but keep hitting low slices. Not sure if it’s off the heel or toe but feels terrible. Maybe I’m turning too hard?

    hi mike,
i use this drill often. especialy when i have trouble finding my rithm en tempo. works wonders!
what do you thinks is detrimental too the turning of your body type of move/swing basis??. i use the method of george from GGswingtips. he and i think that an good body rotation solves almost everything.
    thanks, Rick

I acquired these golf swing techniques , Jοmtοnο Naha (Go ogle it), read it in 1 night, and the following day at the driving range applied it. I was astonished when I immediately hit my irons with proper divots with solid impact. I was hitting about 10-15 yards farther with my irons than I was accustomed to. Get your own now!

th-cam.com/video/sRUTc4Fm2Jg/w-d-xo.html You say if we don't help it we'll either have to twist into the ball or catch the club face up. Could you please list 2 of the best players that twist into the ball and 2 of the best players that catch the club face up? Can you slow mo your swing and tell us what your tendencies are and/or what you're working on?

This video showing how Mike Malaska believes that one needs to "bump" the club outwards when one reaches the P5.5 position is the fundamental basis of his "Malaska Move" which tumbles/pivots the clubshaft over-the-plane while he pulls his hands inwards towards his thighs. However, that "pivot move" is not used by PGA tour golfers who maintain an intact LAFW that is continuously "on-plane" throughout the entire downswing. What professional golfers do at P5.5 is they FIRST release the club (representing the release of PA#2 in TGM terms) and then they SECONDARILY release PA#3 (which is biomechanically due to a left forearm supination action) that causes the released club to rotate counterclockwise so that the released club can be squared by impact.
Here is a graph from Phil Cheetham's research study on 94 professional golfers showing the release of PA#2 and PA#3.
    perfectgolfswingreview.net/CheethamTwistReleaseTwo.jpg
Here is a short review paper describing how to interpret that graph.
    perfectgolfswingreview.net/MalaskaMove.html
Mike Malaska is unfortunately TGM-illiterate and he therefore cannot understand the golf swing technique used by most professional golfers - like Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy. They certainly do not perform the "Malaska Move" type of golf swing action.
    Jeff.
