When it comes to EXO, in order to understand what is happening in any of the stories in their MVs, you have to be aware of the fact that EXO's MVs are kind of like a movie -- it's a movie or TV drama, that has been going on for the past 8 years and it has no sign of coming to an end any time soon. Each of EXO's MVs is like another episode of their drama or mystery. All of EXO's MVs and storylines from everything EXO has ever been involved in are connected and it all tells a little more of EXO's story. And not only that, but EXO aren't even human, so that throws an even more complicated concept into the mix. LOL
To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012. "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV and It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept. So to really understand EXO you need to start from the very beginning and watch both the EXO-K and EXO-M versions of their "Mama" MVs. From day one, EXO's concept is that they are aliens from Planet Exo, and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so many of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are often connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their comeback for their War album and Power album coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment, and its founder, Lee SooMan, has all of EXO's release dates and concepts planned out for years in advance, and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place
As the English lyrics in "Monster" say ... They're "Creeping, Creeping Creeping .... Creeping in your heart babe" "You can call me Monster (because) I'm creeping in your heart babe." "She got me goin' crazy." The song's called "Monster" so the words are about acting like a Monster "Don't be afraid love is the way... i'm sorry, you make me sooo craaaazzzy, you know you dooooo." LOL So the floating watch and the car that is on fire in reverse, etc., I think was -- on top of being a metaphor in the story -- is also supposed to be the members using their superpowers. And the snake you see is supposed to mirror the beat of the song and theme of the MV. So, like a monster, the beat of the song kind of slithers like a snake and they slither in and out of the relationship stealing warmth and affection from the girl, but in the end, leaving her cold and alone like a cold-blooded snake, etc.
However, the lyrics of the song really have very little to do with the story in the MV. "Monster" is one example where if you want to know what the song is about you have to look up the English translation of the lyrics. Because the lyrics in the song tell a different story than the story in the MV. In the song the members are talking about a girl and they are telling the girl that "You can call me Monster" because I know I am bad for you and I will ruin you. I know that when we are over that I will have destroyed everything that is good about you, but I don't care because I want you so much that it doesn't matter to me. So ... "Don't be afraid, love is the way ... you can call me Monster ... because I'm creeping in your heart babe." The song is about possessing a girl and using her up and throwing her away in the end, but the MV really is about EXO's origin story and about the fact that they are aliens from Plant Exo who have come to Earth on a mission and they are searching for clues to help them on their quest to find and protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces.
Some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life, you begin to see even more parallels to EXO's story and even more ways to connect even more of it all together.
Also, the majority of the choreography for "Monster" has to do with the members using their powers, so when/if you watch the dance practice and/or watch a live performances really pay attention to the choreography, so you can find the parts where they use their powers. For example: when D.O. makes a gesture with his arms all the members are pulled toward him or pushed away from him because he is using his power of force/strength; when Xiumin moves across in front of the rest of the members you will see them all pause as if frozen because he used his power of frost/ice; and when Sehun stands in the middle of the group the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm because Sehun controls wind, etc. This is one of the best examples of how EXO continues their concept and story in everything they do, including in their choreography. Everything, down to the most minute detail, is expertly thought out and planned to always stick to their concept and story.
And you should also make note that their next MV for their song "Lotto" is a prequel to "Monster" so when/if you watch "Lotto", just keep in mind that what you saw happen in "Monster" is what is going to take place after the events in "Lotto", and both MVs might make a little more sense to you then.
I'm not positive how "Monster" and "Lotto" tie in to EXOs larger storyline. But, I'm pretty sure, that "Lotto" and "Monster" are connected. So I think the story starts out in "Lotto" where the members have somehow infiltrated this big gambling ring and are maybe sort of undercover as they work to uncover a clue or something they need in order to accomplish their tasks here on Earth. I think the underground gambling establishment is run by a gang of bad guys who are probably members of the Red Force. "Lotto" is where we are introduced to a girl who is being held captive. And ultimately, I think what EXO are trying to do is rescue the girl from the Red Forces or the bad guys, but they are trying to do it without blowing their cover or being found out. So that's why you see in "Lotto" and continued in "Monster" the members are fighting against the FBI or police because the police have come in to take down the gambling ring and rescue the girl, which is also what EXO are trying to do. The members of EXO don't want to be discovered, so they play along as if they are part of the bad guys. But in the end, as you see in "Monster," Baekhyun disguises himself as one of the police and helps the other members escape before they are taken to jail and/or are captured by the Red Force, etc.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
EXO-K
💦 Suho (Kim JunMyeo) is the leader of the group and he is a lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho)
💡Baekhyun is a main vocalist and his superpower is the ability to control light
🔥Chanyeol is the main rapper and lead vocalist -- his power is the ability to control fire and his spirit animal is the phoenix.
🌏D.O. (Do KyungSoo) is a main vocalist and his power is the ability to control earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
☄Kai (Kim JongIn) is a main dancer, lead vocalist and sub-rapper and his power is teleportation. (Kai means door or gateway, so his stage name symbolizes his role within EXO's storyline.

Lay is not back ....he's been in China since 2016. This is the last album he was a part of for Exo. He vows to be back though he can't come back yet. So he has focused on his solo music since then and has produced 4 albums including the latest "Lit" album. And he has become extremely successful, not to mention affluent. Until he is able to come back to Korea to reunite with Exo🙏, they are physically 8 members for now....well now 5, since 3 members are doing their mandatory military service (18 months) with one more leaving soon. So Exo is broken up for the moment until they all do their service and Lay can come back. "Monster" is from 2016 off the Ex'Act album. Lay went to China in 2016 to make a solo album intending to come right back, then political tensions between China and S. Korea flared and he was banned from participating in Exo activities. We're waiting for it to calm down so he can come back.
No he appeared in tempo and sang the Chinese version if you check the Chinese version of the song you'll see him singing with them
he is back the political issues have been resolved, it was last year and he was in Tempo bro in MULTIPLE shots, and has a lot of lines and camera shots in the Chinese version and he even flew to Korea to go Christmas shopping with Baekhyun and sent D.O off too
Lay isn't "back" in "Monster," but this was before he had to stop working with EXO. "Monster" came out in 2016. The first comeback that Lay was not involved in was for "Ko Ko Bop" which came out in 2017. :D
Lay is one of the most famous celebrities in China right now, so everyone wants to work with him. He owns his own record label/studio in China and he produces his own music, as well as music for other artists. Plus, he is, or was, a youth ambassador to China appointed by the government, which means he has a lot of obligations in China. He is considered China's national producer. He is also an actor and he is a spokesperson for a lot of Chinese products and causes -- he is the EXO member with the most endorsement deals. He is also a host of reality programs and is appearing on numerous variety shows in China, so this all keeps him very busy. He is one of the most sought after celebrities in China so he spends a lot of time living in China and away from the other EXO members. Because of his super busy schedule and because of some issues between the Chinese and Korean government, Lay has not been a part of EXO activities for almost 4 years now, other than his cameo appearance in EXO's "Tempo" MV and his brief vocal part in the Mandarin version of "Tempo" MV and song.
His hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but it's something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. So he has recently been working hard to find ways around those restrictions.
Now, I am nowhere near an expert on the topic, and I admit that I only understand a very minor part of what is going on between the Chinese and Korean government, but as I understand it, part of the reason for the ban on Chinese and Korean workers between the two countries is that China is refusing to align itself with the U.S. or South Korea to protect themselves with deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. North Korea and China want to get rid of the rocket system that is meant to shoot down a nuclear missile if North Korea were to launch one at South Korea or the U.S. Another reason why China doesn't like the THAAD system is because China and the U.S. don't have the best relationship, so if the U.S. and China become on even worse terms China is afraid the U.S. could also use THAAD against them. China says the THAAD system is just provoking them to actually start a nuclear war, and until they remove it or at least move it back from the South Korean boarder, they will continue their ban on Korean products, workers and the Hallyu wave from working in China and for its native Chinese citizens from working with Korean companies. China feels like the Korean government is taking away its native commodities by allowing Chinese people to work in Korea. The issue is even more complicated than this, but that is one part of it.
And now, with the recent conflict with the Chinese government and Hong Kong, more political tension has continued to make it difficult for our Chinese Idols to work with their Korean companies and groups. With many Chinese Idols recently coming out in support of the Chinese government and publicly supporting "One China," this has made it once again even less likely that Lay will be able to work with EXO in the near future. With Lay's deep ties to the Chinese government and with the fact that he is one of the most popular celebrities in China right now, he can't afford to be blacklisted by the Chinese government. He needs to be able to work and live in China as freely as possible. So, regardless of how he might feel politically on a personal level, he has to come out in support of the Chinese government publicly, which puts him at odds with many other counties views on the subject. With pressure from the Chinese government, it may have been difficult for him to stay neutral, or at least not make his opinion public, so unfortunately he is now receiving some backlash from people outside of mainland China.
But no matter what, Lay always makes sure to find a way to show fans that he is, and will always be, a member of EXO -- he is always supporting his EXO brothers even from afar. Most recently we were able to see Lay back together with the rest of EXO when Lay came to Korea to be there for the day that D.O. enlisted in the military. And in most of Lay's solo work we have nods to EXO and how the stories in his solo MVs are connected to EXO's storyline. He always works hard to remind everyone how important EXO and EXO-Ls are to him.

Baekhyun, Chen, and D.0. are the main vocals. (I'm a 36 year old forever fan girl and they are literally the best vocals of any group I've ever heard in my LIFE. Baekhyun is my Ultimate Bias lol)
The song that made me a fan is 'What Is Love'(EXO-K) It is ONLY Baekhyun and D.O singing. It will literally blow your mind!! It was actually released before their debut. There were initially two groups. EXO-K for Korean and EXO-M for Mandarin.
I don't know for sure but have always assumed the songs were released to get people hyped up for the new groups insane talent.
Also a few members covered the English song Open Arms. That is still today one of my favorite Baekhyun vocals.

I think you will really enjoy an "EXO Journey" if you watch their MVs from the beginning in 2012. It will totally worth your time :D
They have 2 pre-releases: "What is love" and "History" and then debut video: "Mama".
At that time they were 12 members (8 Korean and 4 Chinese), 6 were in EXO-K (Korean) and 6 in EXO-M (Mandarin).
I will suggest to watch both versions as they tend to be complementary.
Aftet that we started losing members so we went from 12 to 9. Lay (Zhang Yixing) is the only chinese member left but he can not perform with EXO for political reasons. I will suggest to check his MVs too: "Honey", "Lit", "Lose Control", "What u need", "Monogram" etc.
EXO has also solo releases from D.O, Chen. Baekhyum and Suho.They are 2 subunits: EXO CBX and EXO SC. Looooots of material and music to binge on!!!!!
