@@jayzenstyle a lot of people want a quick and "easy" solution for self made problems, some would rather prefer we make it happen by any means and think about about possible outcomes afterwards (even knowing how bad it could be, they just don't want to care) [ "they" being primarily wealthy individuals with only self interests in mind as they always have ]

The problem with "focusing on our home first" is that if an extinction event happens, we'll be wiped out, from asteroids, super nova's, or super Volcanos, there's also the problem of resources, we're running out of rare resources that the world needs, and all of those resources are abundant in space, especially in the asteroids that float around aimlessly, ignoring space is like ignoring an exit in a burning building
A second issue that's rarely brought up is that nearly all the methods for "fast" terraforming make the planet completely inhospitable in the short term. We CANNOT use them on Earth because it would KILL US. It's like if a house has termites. The fastest way to get rid of them is to bubble the house and gas it... but the people living there have to move out while it happens. Terraforming can be done on Earth, but it has to be slower and more delicately achieved within a system infinitely more complex than the lifeless surfaces of Mars, Venus, or some other planet.

Well the narrator did say at the beginning, that once humanity fixed the current problems we are facing(like climate change) and managed to do cheaper space launching, this ain't far off.
Because at this point of terraforming Mars, we probably already did the terraforming to our own Earth. After all, this wouldn't be a thing if it wasn't tried and tested to begin with.
The main issue with moving to Mars is the low gravitational pull if we do get to Mars and send a colony there the pressing issue is the possibility of Martians (Earth Colony) may neve being able to come back to Earth because of Earth's higher gravitational pull. So colonists will have to be ready that they may never be able to come back home.

@@simpleviking dude like I am not trying to be mean but honestly how the hell did you think cows could live on a mars that had no plantlife yet? besides you said methane was co2 for some reason wich is just plain incorrect. also cows are really picky and need specific food and stuff like that. they would not survive there even with the plants we could grow on mars

I assume this won't reach our lifetimes, but terraforming testing on Earth is probably something already beginning. Especially the planned Line megastructure that Saudi Arabia is pulling off can give us some insight on how to do and not do terraforming.
Hey from Germany. I just wanted to mention that the "Why don't we fix things on earth before moving into space" never really worked for me. Nothing new would ever be discovered that way. There will never be a situation when we say "Alright, every single problem here is solved, *now* we can go someplace else". I think it takes some of us the exist at the limits of our capabilities and knowledge... to expand those limits and maybe even discover new ways of solving problems back home, where most of us remain thinking about those problems.
They got it backwards , they should fix / create the magnetic field first , THEN they should terraform the planet . They should also make it so that Mars itself produces the magnetic field . OR install a magnetic field generator inside Mars. Also the magnetic field should be just as strong as Earth's . Or close to it.
I think we're going to send the first human to mars in around 25\30 years, while the process of terraforming I would say 2\3 centuries... if it happens. And let's say it happens, it would take soooo long, a couple of centuries i suppose. Also, imagine if we could live in both planets, such a cool thing. Loved the reaction, much love from Brasil S2!

2:40 (answer for your question) every major breakthrough in science, technology, "everything" has something to do with Nasa and other space industries trying to solve problems in space or trying to get to space as they invent stuff the military buys it improves it corporations commercialise it and we benefit. So to change the earths atmosphere it is most efficient to start from 0 to figure out our best possible solutions to fix it so as we terraform a new planet new data gets sent to earth and a lot of scientists try to fix problems and others copy improve and fix our planet
plus a terrible idea trying to fix something you have never had trial and error on before like the only planet we live on better fvck mars and fix it before trying to fix earth and fail and killing us

and on the context human had solved it's problems on earth
however things like position the lasers, stabilise the biosphere, import nitrogen to Mars and many more have to be done using complicated and very difficult calculations over a span of many generations

I dont think we send humans to Mars that soon, since we could send robots to do the hard work first. Human like robots within 20 years, humans after 30 I think. Human settlers in maby 70-120 years.
