Trying to be clean actually defeats the purpose of surprising the audience most of the time. Jerry Seinfeld is a great example of that. Louis CK is funny even when he’s talking about feeding his children because you don’t know what he’s gonna say next.
We use the term horsepower, because it was an amount of people could relate to and understand, when the steam engine was first invented. James Watt defined the term horsepower based on the pulling capacity and speed he measured from draft horses pulling a mill wheel. Ironically, the unit of the Watt that replaces the horsepower is also named after him, established after his death.
