  • Koishiwara is surrounded by beautiful nature and is famous for its ceramic kilns and artists. Fifty kilns participate in this festival in which you browse and shop for Koishiwara ware and Takatori ware with discounts of 20% or more. You can also chat with the potters and see their new works. The festival is usually held for three days, but this fall, to spread out the crowds, the period will be extended to one month, and visitors will be able to enjoy the same benefits as during the festival, such as sales at a discount of 20% off the regular price. Surrounded by mountains 1,000 meters above sea level, the Koishiwara area has produced pottery for about 350 years. It is blessed with red soil suitable for pottery and trees to fuel the kilns. There is a peaceful landscape of terraced rice paddies and houses with thatched roofs, and all of the kilns scattered along the national highway have a gallery. In the center of the village, there is a roadside station and a community exhibition hall so that you can take a stroll around the area.

    FAQ
    Who are you?
Nick Szasz, a Canadian who has lived in Japan for about 35 years. Thirty-one years in Fukuoka, three in Tokyo and one in Osaka. I’m the founder and publisher of Fukuoka Now magazine, a monthly printed bilingual magazine about Fukuoka and Kyushu for international residents and visitors from overseas. Fukuoka Now magazine: issuu.com/fuku... and Fukuoka Now website www.fukuoka-no... - I live in Itoshima - and post about that here: www.itoshima-no...
    Why are you doing this?
I love Kyushu, walking, and cameras, so this seemed like a perfect combination and fun. I hope that even in this small way, I can show off and connect Kyushu to the world. Sit back, relax, and let me do the walking and talking.
    Support appreciated!

Looks so beautiful and just stunning! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful video! I’m originally Fukuoka, currently me and my Canadian husband live in overseas. We love Japan especially Fukuoka, but under the COVID situation, we’re not able to travel and haven’t seen my family and friends for over two years. So your video makes us super happy every single time! Thank you very much and please keep showing us your journey!

That was great! BTW Takatori ware was started by potters from Korea brought to Kyushu when Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded. They took their Japanese family name from the Takatori Castle on Fukuchi mountain. The kilns have moved around over the centuries from Takatori, to Nogata, to Iizuka, to Koishiwara area. The 15th generation is now a potter.

Thanks Brian for that additional information. So much to learn and discover. There's a very good chance we'll visit other pottery towns like Arita, Hasami and Imari in the near future.
