Justin Caban Yeah, it’s what I was kinda thinking it was or like those old previews at the ends of various early Neon Mickey tapes between 1980 and 1981.
That IS a bit weird, but also cool. Incidentally, The Sword in the Stone was originally planned to be the second release in Walt Disney Classics before they switched to Pinocchio.
Sword in the Stone was supposed to be the second Classics release with a targeted July 1985 release, but the new Disney management argued in favor of releasing Pinocchio instead since it was coming off a profitable theatrical re-release and it made sense to strike while the iron was hot. Sword's video release wound up being postponed until March 1986 as the fourth Classics release.
MrServoRetro Yeah, think this could only be a thing on the Canadian tapes. Did find another copy of the 1984 tape of Robin Hood and it also has the preview on it.
I just ordered the 1984 Canadian VHS of Robin Hood from Ebay Today, but I'm not sure if my copy will have The Sword In The Stone Trailer or not. but I'll check once I get it
My theory is that they were going to release it in the summer of 1985 until Ron Miller was ousted in 1984 in favor of Michael Eisner, Frank Wells, and Jeffrey Katzenberg who wanted the most popular films to be release onto video. They chose Pinocchio since it had a successful Christmas release in 1984. As I said, The Sword in the Stone was originally going to be the second film in the Walt Disney Classics line until it was on hold in favor of Pinocchio and Dumbo (which came to video in 1981 and T.V. before then). This could explain why Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone had stock numbers of 228 and 229 respectively.
Evan Opedal Perhaps, the tape was released in December 1984 right around the time that Eisner, Wells, and Katzenberg would’ve began their time with Disney. It is good to know though and I guess this could mean this is an original 1984 copy of the tape before this decision was finalized. Thanks for telling me.
The Sword in the Stone was planned as the second title in The Classics line, cause like Robin Hood, The Sword in the Stone underperformed in its 1983 theatrical reissue. But Disney executives decided to release a title that would be considered a huge seller and major risk to release on video. In this case was Pinocchio. As far as I know before Pinocchio was chosen they had intended to release only the animated classics that either underperformed in the box office or were the least likely to be reissued anytime soon.
Dalia1784's Hullabaloo Cool, nice to know so I think this tape I have was made and released before they made those changes to their plans perhaps. Even though on most early copies of this tape I’ve seen from everyone on here doesn’t have this at the beginning of their copies.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I think you are right that must be a very late pressing for this release. I will have to keep my eyes open for more late manufacture copies of this release!
patch Thanks and yeah, I think you are right, though it could’ve also been from 1985 as well but just doesn’t have the Walt Disney and You promo at the end (though I wish it did). Also the preview/trailer itself reminds me a lot of those little previews/trailers that several really early Neon Mickey tapes between 1980 and 1981 had on them at the end of the film usually so it could be something like that as well, but who knows?
@@Pokemon493Fan Does your tape have the manufacture date stamped on the bottom? My copy of this release was manufactured on 10/22/1985, but it does not have the preview, so I'm guessing your copy was most likely manufactured very close to the release of Sword in the Stone, which was released on 3/25/1986
patch Unfortunately, no because it doesn’t cause it’s a Canadian copy of the film. Interesting... I do think your copy at least has the Walt Disney and You promo at the end (which my copy doesn’t unfortunately, though I hope to find a copy with that on it one day), and I do think you are right on that but I don’t know when exactly they stopped selling the black clamshell version of Robin Hood exactly as well. Also, on the spine of my copy, it says 228VF instead of the usual 228VS like it would usually say, but it is the Canadian copy and it’s not in French obviously.
@@Pokemon493Fan very peculiar indeed! You are absolutely right by the way, my copy ends with the promo. Unfortunately, the case of my copy is in very bad shape :( tape looks great, but the plastic on the spine is coming apart. I need to replace it soon. I'm obsessed with buying variants of Robin Hood on VHS (it's my favorite movie of all time) so I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for a 228VF copy!
patch Yeah, don’t know if even the die hard Disney VHS collectors would know what to say about this either. Nice btw! My case is in pretty great shape despite it being over 30 years old, still plays well and everything xD Oh nice! You collect any other Disney VHSs like I do? Also it would be interesting if you could show your copies on your channel perhaps, it’d be cool! 😊
Frances Jacobs There actually isn’t a print date on the tape unfortunately because it is a Canadian copy, and they mostly don’t have print dates on them.
My tape doesn't have that! Although it did have a cool '84.95' sticker on it, meaning someone paid that back when the tape was first done in 1984! (Don't worry, I paid a paltry $8 including shipping back in 2008!)
Only 2 of the characters appeared in Disney Heroes: Battle Mode Robin Hood Sheriff of Nottingham Maid Marian was definitely supposed to appear in this game but was probably scrapped
These early WDHV VHS releases keep surprising me more and more. This is a rare and cool find
The original 1963 theatrical trailer for The Sword in the Stone!
Justin Caban Yeah, it’s what I was kinda thinking it was or like those old previews at the ends of various early Neon Mickey tapes between 1980 and 1981.
Wow, that "Sword in the Stone" trailer has nearly all the film's screaming scenes! Surprised "The Lion King" never did that for one of their trailers.
wileyk209zback That’s interesting xD

Not to mention that they decided to show it on Disney Channel around the same time instead in order to not let it go to waste

@William Harding I think so.
