You’re welcome Cassandra, I’m glad the video was helpful for you, nothing healthier than those tasty greens, I hope you have a bountiful garden season!
Good to know that leaves are safe to eat. One of the reason i did not care to grow broccoli was because it seemed a waste of time and space for just the rosette broccoli. Thanks for great info.
Mariana Geamanu Me the same, except l cook them with a bit of water instead using saturated fat. I feel, why eat all this goodness and then ruin it with olive oil.
I'm growing broccoli and cauliflower for the first time this year, and my broccoli is so tall! It's flowering, and so I don't think it's going to give me any heads....any reason for this? I'm not upset because I'm honestly just proud they survived past being seedlings!
Hi Katie, usually when a fruit bearing plant produces mostly leaves and not much fruit it’s because of too much nitrogen in the soil. On fruit bearing plants such as tomatoes broccoli, peppers etc. you usually want to keep the nitrogen low and phosphorus and potassium a little bit higher. On the other hand leafy greens love a lot of nitrogen! I hope this helps!
@Plant-Smart Living w/ Farmer Fred Detwiler 👋 hi! - This is my first year growing broccoli. The heads were so small, I thought I should wait until they got larger but then they just all turned to flowers and very tall. If I cut the flowers and tall stems, will I still get smaller offshoots of broccoli? Or should I just pull out the whole plant? Actually thank you for this info I’m going to start eating the leaves! Thank you so much for your calm kindness 🥰
Hi Sandy, thank you for your kind words, broccoli is a cool weather crop so when the warm weather comes they start to bolt and turn to seed, You could try cutting the tall stems back and see if you get some side shoots of broccoli. I hope you have a bountiful garden season!
Great video! We harvested our first heads and are periodically harvesting the secondary shoots that come up. Does leaving the large leaves on the plant make for bigger secondary broccoli heads, or does thinning out the larger leaves after the shoots have started allow for more sun penetration and thus bigger secondary heads? Thank you for this awesome video! God bless!
@@PlantSmartLivingNOW It was SO yummy. I went for the smaller more tender leaves and they were so silky when steamed and added to my rice and dal and more.
Thanks, Farmer Fred. I especially appreciated how you pulled the leaf off the stem. I had no idea that broccoli leaves are so nutritious. My little neighborhood where I live, this woman has a garden, and allows us to harvest what we wish. I selected a nice little broccoli stock today and was looking at those beautiful big leaves. Thank you for letting me know they are good.
I just started doing this! My broccoli overwintered, and at first I thought it was collards! But lo and behold, I saw little broccoli heads forming! I then googled to see if broccoli leaves were edible, why would they be, but wanted to be sure! Thanks!
I went to take some home from my community garden and some of the other gardeners thought I was crazy when I said don't just throw those leaves away but eat them. Glad I'm not the only one that see's the leaves and a nutritious leafy green food.
I try not to waste anything in the garden if I can… here's an article I did why you should eat broccoli leaves… www.plantsmartliving.com/blog/top-10-reasons-why-you-should-eat-broccoli-leaves
Thanks 🙏🏽 I’m doing that now ,because my broccoli plants didn’t produced the broccoli florets 🥦 itself. Only leaves🍃, and the stems are very hard so I’ll plant more and just consume them, the same way until one day the florets comes out
I thought you were holding a turnip green leaf. But, I too cook my broccoli leaves too. But, I cook them like collard greens. I always have.. Thanks for sharing
Thank you FF! Perhaps next year I can get to my broccoli leaves before the bugs do. I would love to try them, I’m guessing they are loaded with vitamins.
I eat brokely leaves and coliflower and turnip and radish and squash and carrots and peas also the flowers I don't waist nothing. And beat leaves and so many others like sweet potatoes , I also eat nasturtiums leaves and flowers . They so yummy I eat the stalks my favourite bit . X
Good evening gentleman. We have various plants but not growing satisfactorily. Could you please guide me what is needed to get good amount of vegetables.
Hi Christina, yes, it’s still OK to eat the leaves when the plants are young, I usually wait till the plants are around 6 inches tall or a little bit more and pick a few leaves from each plant.
I grow some broccoli close together and cut the leafs while small and tender for my salad. They taste great and real tender no cooking needed, just wash and eat in salad. I will let some go to become large.
Since it's untested, I'm not sure how floret and leave compare in glucosinolate level, but for calcium, leaves are higher than any other common vegetable, I believe around 350 mg per 100g, varying with conditions such as soil. The highest I know of should be 600-700+ mg per 100 grams though you'd need to eat wild plants that people here no longer pick. It's worth finding out what they are; you likely have many growing as weeds. The nutrition of the stronger tasting often very bitter wild greens make them well worth study.
Hi Hamsa, it sounds like you have too much nitrogen in your soil, when you have too much nitrogen in your soil you get mostly leaf growth and not much fruit growth, all your leafy greens like a lot of nitrogen but any plant that bears fruit likes more phosphorus and potassium. I hope this helps and I hope you have a bountiful garden season! 😊
my stepfather planted greens and cabbage at the top of the plant looks like broccoli so I would like to know to collard greens or any greens produce broccoli
I love the leaves of the Rutabaga. They're so mild but taste like greens. I've never tried the Broccoli leaves. I think I'm going to try my hand at Broccoli in my Fall garden. Hey, if WebCajun can grow it in his Zone 8 garden, I feel certain, maybe, I can at least try... :-)
Hi , mine just abt 3 months but no sign of flower, and today dad's friend told us we can eat the leaves, if we do so, will that effect the growth of the flower?
Hi Sir, I envy your farm 😊 I have a question. I our farm, I cannot really grow fruits and vegetables because of the squirrels 🐿, mole, rabbits, and different kind of birds 🦅. When my Plums and cherries are starting to flower, they eat them too 😢 I will appreciate any tips? 💕 Californian here 🇺🇸
I never knew you could eat broccoli leaves. I am a 1st year of growing my own broccoli and wonder if you could eat the large leaves since they grow with the broccoli N came to YTU and seen that you can😮😊❤
seems some animals also love it. my small crop gets eaten every night. could be rats, possum, or raccoon? Spotted these animals in my neighborhood and mounted a camera but still no luck with motion detection. guess I'll just set recording for continuous.
Hi Johnson, I plant a lot of my vegetables under a low tunnel hoop house in order to keep bugs, squirrels, and rabbit off the plants, and they really do well under these little tunnels. I have a couple videos to show how to install them if that would be a help to you!
Thank you for posting this! I cut my broccoli leaves today and mixed it with my collards when I cooked them. SOOOO delicious!

Hi Maryann, yes, you can start taking a leaf or two from each plant maybe when the plant gets about 6 to 12 inches tall.
Much appreciated

Hi Melissa, you can probably start harvesting your leaves from the plants when they are around 8 inches tall
What can I do to control white mold that appear on the top of the flower of my broccoli

The north east area of the United States!
I actually grew some broccoli that bolted so i cooked them the same as you would collards and they tasted10 times better than the collards!
