  • The story of Habba Khatoon, a 16th century Kashmiri poet and queen, is a legendary tale of love, loss, and the power of poetry:
    Birth and early life
Habba Khatoon was born Zoon Rathar, but was known as "Zoon" (the moon) because of her beauty. She learned to read and write from a local teacher, and was later taken under the tutelage of a Sufi wanderer who taught her Persian.
    Marriage to Yusuf Shah Chak
While hunting, Yusuf Shah Chak, the last independent emperor of Kashmir, heard Zoon singing and fell in love with her. He annulled her marriage to Aziz, a local peasant, and took her to the palace, where she became queen and changed her name to Habba Khatoon, which means "loved woman".
    Separation
In 1579, Mughal emperor Akbar arrested and imprisoned Yusuf Shah, separating the couple. Habba Khatoon became an ascetic and spent the rest of her life wandering the valley, singing her songs.
    Legacy
Habba Khatoon's story and poetry have been passed down orally through centuries, and are still celebrated today. Her mountain, Habba Khatoon Peak, is a symbol of eternal love and the strength of the Dard people.
