It appears the secret is to build up each element visually that helps 'sell' the overall visual effect you're trying to create, right?

That’s right. Rather than trying to get one “hologram” effect, you just keep adding layers to the effect until you’re happy. The method I used is one of many. You could use other effects and plugins to achieve a different looking hologram.
