    I really appreciate your testimony and spreading the words of Jesus. Thank you. I like watching this video but you never stated HOW you converted the plots from a sandy beach to the rich soil I observed? What is the secret?

      Mark - we significantly reduced the use of fertilizers and herbicides and planted quality blends rather than single species.

    Awesome! I’m also in E TX with exactly the same sandy soil. I’ve been trying the release process too. Now In my 2nd year. But George, are you going to plant the summer mix? If so, when? More importantly, when did/will you crimp the spring growth? I’m afraid I crimped too early in middle of April.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George was planting the Summer Release blend a week ago and crimped after planting. It's always best to crimp after planting. I doubt the small grains such as cereal rye has seed heads in the dough stage during April - if you had cereal grains planted.

      Thanks for the reply. So I planted the Fall release blend from Green cover last September. On April 15th of this year the Rye was about 3.5 feet tall, and to me, a newby, it looked like the wheat and rye were almost PAST the doe stage with seeds turning hard about to fall out, so at that point I assumed I was already late and that I should have planted/crimped even earlier, perhaps like April 1. But I’m so new at all this. Who knows. Lol. In my defense I did look up the soil temperature graphs as well as measured it myself and the temperature at 2 inches at 9am was definitely over 65. Like 67. And spring green up was well underway. So maybe I’ll wait next year until around mid-May.

    We depend on cutting and baling rye for straw here. Would you recommend using no till drill after harvest and would this damage the matter

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many farmers drill soybeans or blends into wheat stubble. I would certainly want a blend of species growing as soon as possible in the rye stubble as soon as the hay is removed.

    I have been following your work a long time and finally have a smaller piece of my own property. I am starting from scratch and don’t have access to a drill or crimper. I have seen how y’all use 2x6 or 2x8 to crimp but is there another way to do the release process without a drill? Thanks Grant, God bless.

      Morning and congratulations on owning land! We have several videos on this channel that show our techniques using hand tools to create plots. Soon we'll once again use prescribed fire to remove the fall crop and prepare a seedbed. Stay tuned!

    I have watched almost all your food plot videos. First, does the green cover fall blend work well in northern WI or is it too cold for it? I'm up by Superior and worried that this stuff won't make the winter. This video answered one question I had, which was how this system works for pH. We have soil that needs lime added to adjust the pH, would you add the lime or just start your system? Thanks!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Green Cover Fall Release blend works. find in northern Wisconsin, but it needs to be planted 45 to 60 days before the average first frost date during the fall. Adding lime or allowing the Release Process to improve the soil's pH is a personal choice. It takes longer for natural processes to improve the soil's pH than adding lime but cost a LOT less! I prefer to allow the natural processes to work!

    Did he fertilize the first year or 2? How do you kick start this process?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He didn't add any fertilizer to get started but had during previous years. Blends almost always grow better and produce more tons of forage than any single species.

    I don't have a seed drill can I broadcast my seed then crimp and get similar results? My property is in NW Missouri.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Timothy,
      Unfortunately, the answer is "no". Crimpers have thin fins are blades meant to crush the circulatory system in plants. They only tough the ground every 8" or so. When planting by hand and depending on the current conditions, I may use fire to remove the standing crop and then broadcast the seed, or broadcast into the standing crop and mow or weedeat as close the to the ground as practical. Mowing/weeding doesn't kill most grasses so if grasses are an issue, a herbicide may need to be used.

    • @TimothyBrewer
      @TimothyBrewer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your response. Would you have a recommendation as what I should do? herbicide, mow, prescribed burn? Thank ups again.

    Grant - When a drill is not available, and you apply the seed via spin cast, do you worry about not getting enough seed to soil contact?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay - this depends on the amount of duff on the soil, etc. I like to broadcast just before a. 1/2" or more rain. I sometimes - plan to soon - use a small prescribed fire to remove the standing crop and prepare the seedbed. This is much better and less expensive than disking. Remember that fire doesn't disturb the roots so there's still a log of soil health benefits!

    Can you hook a crimper to the front of the tractor and crimp the same time you plant or do you need to wait?

    • @otiskeithwatkins1679
      @otiskeithwatkins1679 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, if you have enough tractor. RTP and I think a couple of other companies have adapters for that.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      A crimper can be added to the front of a tractor. However, this makes a very long unit and doesn't work well for turning in small plots.
