- By the outbreak of the One Year War the MS-05 Zaku was five years old and largely considered obsolete. The Mobile suit was developed as the first combat-use mass-production mobile suit, but it was soon superseded by the MS-06C Zaku II Early Production Type. After that it was phased out and mainly consigned to auxiliary duties such as training, construction and supply duties. It wasn't until the closing months of the One Year War that the Zaku I's finally saw front-line action and had a chance for some real glory. After Zeon's crushing defeat during Operation Odessa, Zaku I's reinforced their faltering main forces and saw some of the bitterest action of the entire war; fighting desperate rear guard and holding actions, often against the now superior Federation Mobile forces.

I refuse to believe that, even with protagonist levels of plot armor, that one guy could SIDESTEP that blast
Talk about 08th MS Team being "realistic".
Just the Shockwave alone would kill at that range.
What's so hard to believe? He was far enough away from it and the woman zeke pilot wasn't exactly in a position to aim properly or accurately.
@@jesssss7154 he was not. 4,000 ft/s is the speed of a 50BMG thats smaller and slower than a bullet with that sice. do the math and tell me if he can move his body faster than a bullet can fly this 4000 ft.
@@GenosseWolf Uhmm yeah he actually was. If you notice after the shrapnel rained down on those villagers he was far enough away that he wasn't even in any danger of getting hit by it. Heck even the resulting dust cloud didn't reach him. What you and everyone else complaining about this fail to realize is because of the way this shot was framed the Zaku appears a lot closer than it really is. If the animators had kept the size of it in proportion to how far away it really was it would have looked slightly larger than a person. This being a mecha show that obviously wasn't going to fly. So they fudged the proportion sizes a bit and still get everything in the same shot.
I see a lotta complaints about Shiro dodging the 120mm and how it woulda turned him into goo, but few mentioning he would have been dead the moment he fired that RPG with the rear end stuffed into the dirt.

08th MS Team does have a few glaring holes in it, like Shiro's plot armor, but for the most part I think it did a damn good job of giving us the most gritty and realistic portrayal of the One Year War. I really really want more Gundam series like this one.
1:09 - Shiro dodging 120mm rounds point blank is realistic and gritty? 08th MS Team wasn't gritty at all. It was just 12 episodes of Zaku bullying. If you want gritty, go watch Gundam Thunderbolt my friend.

@@TheBigExclusive I really don't care for Thunderbolt. It's not gritty, it's just overly dark and gorey for the sake of it.
But to the dodge, that is the plot armor I was talking about.
Turn A would probably feel the most grounded when it came to the non main character doing the work. Victory was one of the few that didn't hand out plot armor to folks just because they had a actual name, but makes you understand the mental strain of war. War in the Pocket has everything you need to follow up on the gritty realism.
God I love these. And any Desert Version. This is The Best type of series.

The air pressure from that shell being fired should have been enough to pop that brave bastard like an overfilled water balloon. Let alone dodging the shell, enduring that pressure wave *twice* would make him superhuman. Did not know that Newtypes could survive concussive shockwaves that could replicate decently sized thermobaric explosives. Plus, the gasses from those shots would have been beyond lethal to breathe in, and did he seriously shoot an Anti-Tank Rocket from that position? The backblast would have killed him long before the Zaku ever needed to try anything against him. Damn suicidal, that one.
Here's the thing though. Shiro's an Oldtype.
Yeah, Shiro's supposed to be a regular guy. Imagine how dangerous he would be if he became a Newtype.
And he also dodged another one coming in from behind his head. That's something more fitting for a superhero to pull off.
He's an oldtype with insane plot armor.

1:09 - Shiro should be a pile of mush. You can't just 'dodge' 120mm shells like they are "water balloons". They move faster than the eye can see. Try standing right next to an Abrams tank as it fires its 120mm rounds. The air pressure change can kill you.

Let's not forget the toxic gasses from the rounds being fired, the pressure waves from them, the backblast from his RPG, and the fact that he beat a prototype Zaku in a f*cking Ball. Amuro was lucky, but Shiro must have had loaded die when it came to rolling for everything. Hell, his hit on the magazine should have detonated all of the shells, but it didn't. I bet that even *if* the mag detonated, he would have somehow walked away completely unharmed. That isn't 'OYW' levels of Plot Armor, that is 'Kira Yamato' levels of Plot Armor.

@@IansMentalOmega To be fair, that ball was custom made for close combat and could handle on it's own pretty well. Everything else? Yeah. Shiro should have died a hundred times over. No normal human would survive a passing 120mm round THAT close without being torn to shreds from the pressure wave alone, or suffocate from said pressure wave.

OVAs, high budget equals fluid animation. Cons? You have to wait months or even years for another episode because this stuff can only be found in video store hence the V which means video.
We need more OVAs especially if Sunrise try to replicated 80’s 90’s Japanese cartoons era animation style. I’m tired of series like WFM and IBO which use CGI and overly polished lines, I wish they could replicated the painted paper Cel animation look. It’s a shame
It doesn't work that way, Shiro should have been ripped to shred when Zaku fired his gun, whether the bullet directly hit him or not.

While the scene does not ruin the show in its entirety, it is still incredibly dumb and should never have been included.
It doesnt make the show not enjoyable, however this and the ball scene make them Stand out in contrast with the rest of the good scenes, too dumb to be believable i should say

It's funny in one gundam series, the earth federation infantry couldn't even scratch the paint off Zakus with handheld rockets even though there's tons of them. However a few hicks with a couple of rockets takes down three.

Zaku 1, the oldest model in existence. those things weren't even considered for the front line until things started going badly.
@@skeith1543 I did read in a Gundam manual several years ago that some of the older pilots preferred the Zaku 1. I guess it was a preference for comfort and familiarity over protection.

Dude, even a real tank from WWII have some obvious weakest armor... If you aimed correctly you can even kill the crews inside without even need to completely wreck the tank.
@@mikewilson3581 From what I've heard, some Zeon pilots purposefully requisitioned MS-05Bs, mainly 'cause of ever-increasing supply constraints during the One Year War's twilight years; the Principality had lots o' them just lying around. If you requisitioned a MS-05B Zaku I, instead of a MS-06F Zaku II or anything more advanced, then you'd probably be back in the fight much sooner.
Also, the armour is likely purposefully weaker there, even on a newer, much more advanced model. Thicker armour is usually heavier and more expensive, so in most cases a design has it's thickest armour strategically placed where the vehicle's most likely to incur enemy fire; this scenario was an extraordinary circumstance.
