  • How Russ Outsells More Popular Artists
The battle between fun music and lyricism has always been at the forefront of hip-hop.
Hip-hop started off as party music and then quickly developed into a voice for the voiceless.
Once the money became life-changing, labels started to dictate who would get paid and who wouldn’t.
Labels paid for fun music that was commercially viable.
Not so much for lyrical music talking about real issues.
There has been exceptions over the years, but every great rapper who has had massive commercial success, had to make universally appealing, high frequency, sing-along music for their art to get to millions of people.
With the advent of social media, you would think this has changed.
    I don’t think so.
People still gravitate towards the easily digestible music more so than the food for your thoughts.
That’s what’s gets the most Reels and tikToks.
That’s what’s gets the most views on TH-cam.
That’s what’s gets added to the most playlists.
And that is what gets the most streams.
@russ understood this and gave balance.
In this clip with @bdottm he talks about how he outsells other more popular artists.
I give my insight into my music marketing strategy as well.
    What do you think?

I can honestly say, I've never really listened to Russ music, but I always listen to his interviews for these reasons. I did the same with Nipsey; didn't listen to his music until he passed, but I was a major fan of his interviews because of his gems 💎

My lyrical stuff gets more respect & engagement than my simple shit.

This is solid gold. I believe the best artists can mix it up. It all comes down to songwriting ability. My uncle told me years ago, you gotta give people something they wanna hear first. So, I think that your average person (not that we all don't have extraordinary potential) comes home from a 9-5, tired, with kids maybe, and a boat load of problems. The LAST thing they want to do is listen to something super heavy from an artist. They want to unplug, and escape. Which I understand.
It's people who have a little more privilege (earned or not) and a real mission that have the mental space and desire to dig into the depths of an artists deeper content.
Both people exist, so make music for both of them. The reason why MJ was so massive is that he made dance music with really powerful lyrics. He merged the audiences.
That's been the philosophy I live by as an artist. Music or otherwise. 💯

Another great video bro. I love Russ’ hustle and the way he approaches his business model. So solid.
And to your question, I do think an artist can do well by only doing serious songs. Obviously they’ll have a smaller fan base, but it’ll be people that resonate with that serious vibe. Might be some angry, depressed people but if they connect emotionally...boom.
Preciate you bro. Keep bringing the goods.

I feel like as an artist myself I like to make all kinds of music because I don’t want to be put in a box as just lyrical because in this climate a lot of consumers love the melody and beat.
So you have to really diversify yourself and make everything to see what gets traction.

  • @sincerelyp...

An artist can do what they believe their capable of.
For example if you know you want to do serious music because as an artist that's your style and you cant do fun, happy go luck stuff because it's not there then do that just know it might take longer. Because most people are casual fans. But if all the stars align for you. You could be getting your raw message out to the people that have been dying for it. These artists need to invest in their image and their story more than anything because their focus needs to be in developing a strong cult following that bleeds into the mainstream.
On the other hand having the double edge sword of both party records and serious records always is great in the beginning because it speaks to a wider appeal you can have, a bigger understanding in terms of vision, and also versatility because if your an aspiring artist nowadays its expected that you wear as many hats as is possible to gain and retain an audiences attention.
This artist needs to know though what they want to really pursue. Is the goal sales or their vision of influence on the next string of artists & on a bigger level cultural impact.
Because for example if you have a situation like OG Maco where you blow up off a song like U Guessed It then as the tide changes in your heart where you want to showcase your real art but your label and your fans may not be taking to it all the way. It could put you in a really bad spot.

I think what makes you human n what u like as a person is what u should put out weather is real or fun or street type music artists should be able to express them self with out the audience making them feel some type of way. They should have the freedom to do them. As audience who are we to say nah don’t do that. But that’s my point of view stay 🙏🏼✌🏼

To be honest, I was in the same position when I released my first two projects since 2019. After that, I’ve adopted the formula of releasing singles until I reach and collect a select number of fans; in addition, I have decided that if I were to release another album, it will be more in tune to personal and political issues, includinga few fun songs. Before I do so, I have to learn to do more marketing, more pitching, and more engaging with fans. I hope that everything goes well, and this video inspired me to push even further! 💎

When I’m in fan/ audience mode I totally fall in love first with someone’s fun songs. When their music is too serious I’m not interested in hearing more serious concepts from them. I’m ok with Russ being intrusive/ deep with his songs. Because I feel like I got to know him in a way. Wow that’s crazy. Regardless. People can always go back and play that serious shit later on but I think it really is just like having a serious conversation with a stranger. You would want to get out that conversation. Likewise people skip for now and come back later. Or never press play.

I feel you. I like more deeper lyrical music when I’m by myself or at the crib. But my personal opinion is your song gone get spread more by “word of mouth”/go viral if it gots a vibe that you wanna turn it on right before you pick up your homeboys/girls. Which a lot of time it’s mostly the right beat more than anything. Of course the bars matter, but once you attract the fans, they gonna wanna hear your deeper songs and check you out more.Just a humble thot wishin you success 💯

Honestly in my opinion. I feel any artist can be extremely lyrical, and be a success but. This is the real world so there has to be a compromise. The beat has to be hot, the drums on point and that hook crazy. Why, because of the listeners current mood, or possible mood. If your guitars or your beat in the back is wack, it's not going to keep the ear of the listener. Your lyrics could be deep as fu€k on a verse, but. The hook is wack or the bridge is weak. All of these parts of a song help moderate the listeners mood, or lack thereof. Which is why like you said, Fun songs sell.

I have that same question so Im doing a experiment right now. I have two different styles under 2 different names. One is the real lyrical serious style where ai make music to motivate and inspire people going through the struggle. The other style is very ignorant and flashy. I am good at making what I call "regular" music because I have been off the porch my whole life and have lived as the typical street nigga my whole life. Surprisingly the more lyrical song is winning so far. With that in mind I have been pushing it harder and its been out longer. I started doing this feb 18th. So far I have almost 1000 plays 75 fans and a gang of likes a comments if you wanna hear it its on sound cloud. The serious style is called "Trell Different" and the other style is called "Paypertrell". But that is a excellent question

The number one worst piece of advice I've ever heard - Write lyrics people can connect with. That's only true if it's a ballad. Otherwise, no
Look at Michael Jackson. We can all agree he has great music. The songs Beat It, and Thriller have lyrics that myself, and millions of other people cannot relate to. But those songs did extremely well.
Unless the lyrics are so bad, or just plain criminal, then the fans will notice, and write you off. Otherwise - They Don't Care. If it's a great song that makes me jump, who cares about the lyrics.
