The flat spot trick is 100% attention to detail. It stands out to people that understand quality.

Yes I have 20 years in. There is times you do things and surprise yourself. Or you share your skills you’ve learned over a decade ago that you haven’t done for so long. I feel like you see the world in a different perspective as a welder and fabricator. Outside the box with open mind as a problem solver.

Been a rig welder since 85 and I know I haven’t forgotten anything in the last 10 minutes. ALMOST forgot, those vevor mag drills are excellent for the money

I worked at machine shop for around 7 years i got to do this kinda stuff sometimes. Knew how to stick weld mig and tig but had never welded aluminum tig and bosses friend had 100 thousand horse trailer i had to cut holes in top and put in air ducks in to keep his hores cool on long trips. With 10 mins practice learned how to tig aluminum. Working at machine shop you had to learn a lot.

I have been in the welding trade for over 45 years now! It’s all I have ever done. Personally I have probably forgot 1/2 of what I have done in my career! That’s why I still learn something everyday! 😉

“”Is it common to forget things we learn, and to continue to think that we’re learning them for the first time”. Austin, each time this happens it further solidifies your professional knowledge. I know it wasn’t so complicated just the mag drill handle that’s able to be taken off. But your mind is just -that- more solidified. That’s what it is. To learn everyday, to solidify proven knowledge.

Making sure all four nuts visually match is giving the job that extra touch for a first class weld! To quote a favorite uncle, “it only costs a nickel more to Go 1st Class!” Tim in northern TN

    Hi Austin,
if I may, I have some of question for you:
    - would a 2 pass weld with 1/8" 7018 have been possible?
    - would it have been quicker?
    - could you have tacked in place the nut with an easier to start rod (6010, 6013) and still made a good job?
Thanks for your time making the videos!

I've been eyeing that mag drill for a minute, do you know if it will work on straight DC power or does it need ac to operate? Also some anti spatter spray can save those bolts or any springs and small parts when you run into that.

  • @cg8469

Mag drills probably one of the quickest returns on investment you can make. Amount of time saved will pay it back in 2 or 3 jobs.

It’s a vevor brand. For no more than I use a mag drill it’s been working for me. I normally would not have bought such a cheap brand, but I was in a bind.

We greased the threads very generously. As to ware the factory 20 years ago, probably just put barely any barely ever used so therefore it was just a recipe for season up anyway.
