If you like Super Dodgeball, World Cup Soccer, and Crash & the Boys, you owe it to yourself to play the Kunio basketball game on Famicom. I believe it's called Ganbare Dunk Heroes. Basketball with punches and kicks, three hoops stacked on top of each other, and super moves where you jump 100 ft into the air... it's their best sports game by far.

More than just that - the system where you walk into stores to buy food and moves is straight out of River City Ransom. It's not just that you do those things, since you do them in lots of games, it's that if you look at everything from how the characters are animated when they enter a store to where they are placed relative to the screen to how the screen transitions, it's a straight tribute to River City Ransom.

It might not be so confusing if you consider Kunio-Kun a mascot, like Mario or Sonic. So the main games are beat-em-ups, but eventually he stars in other genres (think Mario Tennis, Mario Kart, Doctor Mario, Mario Golf, Mario Party, etc).
I don't know why it took me so long to figure this out... I guess he's an unusual mascot, and mostly unknown in the Western due to localizations rebranding and removing the Kunio-Kun characters and names...

I love seeing River City Ransom videos in 2020. I don't feel like the Magic of the first game has been properly captured since it's original release. Subsequent games like River City Ransom Tokyo Rumble on 3DS has improved fighting, but the shops in that game are boring and the same. River City Girls is a fun multiplayer game with a wicked soundtrack, but you can't do silly things like throw a Tire that your partner is standing on and while your partner is "Log Rolling" on the Tire executing a Dragon Feet technique. The Crazy Combos in River City Ransom was a huge part of the fun. And let's not forget about some other RCR titles such as RCR Underground which actually feels like an RCR sequel with up to 4 player co-op, but is hard as nails. Also "Stay Cool, Kobayashi-San!: A River City Ransom Story" was quietly released like a week after River City Girls came out, which is moreso a Double Dragon style game where you play as Kobayashi (Otherwise Known as Thor, the boss of the Zombies) Also with the re-release of the Scott Pilgram game due out any day now, maybe with a renewed sense of vigor, we might get that River City Ransom sequel the way I want it!

As an aside, that recent Kunio-Kun Collection for PS4 and Switch is really well done. It's got both Japanese and International versions of all the NES Kunio-Kun & spinoff games, with new accurate translations for all the Japanese originals. They also went through and did a bunch of bug fixes, and buffed the emulator to mostly get rid of slowdown and flickering. (Although you can play the original buggy versions if you want.) At $40 it's arguably a little pricey for an 8-bit compilation, but they put a lot of work into it.

Both are fine examples of gaming boys. Nobody realized it was an RPG in my town when I was younger, nor that you had to backtrack a few times to actually get to the end.

So THAT'S why US versions of Japanese games were hard! I would have never guessed it was illegal to rent games in Japan. I guess that's why I never rental stores in Japan...

Just a small correction of sorts: when talking about all of the versions of this game, you omitted the 3DS remake. It was titled "River City: Rival Showdown" so I imagine how confusing this series is, the different name might make you think it's a different game, but it's a remake of the game you've covered here.
This series gets confusing because what you see are a lot of different genres and what appear to be re-releases, but no, some are remakes, prequels, and sequels. Putting it all in a chronological timeline in-universe seems like a nightmare in my head already.

I enjoyed playing River City Girls. I wanted to play more River City games, but the previous games (even though they're rereleased) are so westernized that it doesn't make sense to the series. So, River City Girls is what got me to the series.
