Man I wish people like you would create hands on computer museums. Line the walls with parts and fully built retro computers loaded with software from the era and a benchmark that spans across all computers that can compare them. I’d totally pay money for something like that.
Very long time ago, maybe around 98 or so, i had one S3 Virge with 2MB, expandable to 4MB. A neighbor was about to scrap an lower level S3 (i believe it was the Trio, or likewise, with only 2MB soldered). I got it from him, de-soldered the mem chips and added them to my own. I still have that card, tested it a few weeks ago when my saphire 3850 agp began with power loss issues. At that time, that little upgrade/mod, allowed me to play GTA2 as i could not afford better one.
Amazing! That's why I love this generation of retro computing, check out that failure rate! No heatsink, not a lot of electolytic caps, no tiny SMD components. But hey, no 3D is the trade-off haha! Those cards were built like tanks! Looking forward to see the rest!!!

I have watching you long ago. I would like to watch something from AMD Athlon XP, Pentium 1-2-3 era. Early need for speed series (1&2 or hot pursuit 2). Early Radeon series video cards for example Radeon 7000-7500-8500-9000 etc paired with Geforce ones. Some games name as inspiration for you : Blood 1997, Starcraft 1998, Unreal tournament series, Grand theft auto 3 etc.

That Orchid ProVGA is cool as hell (and huge!) I love the awesome color BIOS thing it does, never seen something like that before. I'm really curious about what it can do compared to a more generic/standard VGA adapter of the day. Are you going to make a video comparing the performance of some of these cards? Also, it's funny how they pretty much all worked despite their age. Much more reliable than the more modern GPUs you get!
The more expensive ISA cards were faster. For example TSeng ET4000 can have like 3x more FPS in wolfenstein 3D from slower ones and less expensive. Also 2D games, with scrolling background, was more smooth on them, so looked nicer. There were lots of platform based arcade games in that are, like Keen, Duke Nukem 1, they just looked more smooth when moving.

God I really love how old hardware looks. It's just a lot more interesting and modular. Everything looks the same now, RAM and 24 pin on the right, CPU and 4/6 pin on top, PCI-E below, all the same. But with this it's all over the place like a breadboard. It's a tinkerer's dream. Look in the magazine, what do they have this month? Oh look, that's different. You want a green PCB, brown, or yellow? How about red or orange? Here's a processor in cartridge form, here's one with pins, will it boot? Nobody knows!

I think that was probably one of the main factors, not all cards handle a variety of modes and you can see cards here with two connectors and capable of outputting from MDA all the way up to VGA. Another aspect to consider was the ability to have GUI acceleration for the upcoming Windows OS at that time. And in addition to all this, each graphics chip was different from another in performance despite having the same amount of RAM, some professional graphics cards could also work better in certain software. And of course it all came with a price tag, if you think about it, it seems like today's time if you have to choose a graphics card from the existing market.
Some of those I had, Trident, Oak and were very reliable. Even some cars with Oak chipset I found to work on 8-bit ISA slot on a XT class computer or 286. However, never had a ISA card with more than 1M VRAM, only VLB or PCI. I don't know why, always wanted to max the memory on my graphics cards back then.
I think I've installed every single one of those through the years, or at least some version. The good old days of straightening leads on memory chips and re-inserting them.
Hey, where do you get those replacement fan hub covers you use when you relube small VGA fans? Love that Orchid ProDesigner card. That thing is just begging to be used in a fast 286 build!!!

GBS-8200 is not a CGA/EGA converter! To convert 9-pin CGA/EGA to 15-pin VGA use latest revision of MCE Adapter by Necroware, this is the best choice. PS Very cool collection of vintage cards)) For dead Video7 card with 2 Cirrus Logic chips in PLCC sockets try to use dioxide for contacts in socket.
Much of the manufacturer I knew at least by name, but that there were also Realtek graphics cards, that's really new for me. But I also had less contact with ISA graphics. Thanks BR Thomas
Buy Xeon E5450. it's cheaper, and easy to get. You can buy it even with socket 771-775 mod. You then just add microcodes into BIOS, if not detected, but some better and later socket 775 motherboards can detect it directly.

not an expert of stuff from this era: what were the distinguishing factors between these cards other than amount of supported colors and VRAM size?

ISA cards hardly ever go bad. Where the PCI cards had problems with the soldering of Surface mount chips and heat issues.

Many of the dates you are giving on these cards aren't borne put by the PCB or Chip date codes, often by 2 or three years.
years are when was first release, not pruduce by any brand .. this can be different sometimes
