Considering how much guitar lesson junk there is on You Tube, this young man is a pleasure to watch. He's an excellent player and teacher. I've been playing guitar since the 1960's so I know good from bad. Kudos to Mr Swift.
Jon, you are truly an inspiration! Your teaching method of slow and steady, repetition, demonstration, and explanation really raises the bar for instructors- not to mention you have that JT feel to your voice as well. Great lesson, great vocals, great Scott! Glad I found you on TH-cam!
Great job! Probably the best lesson for this song on youtube. And your voice sounds very close to James Taylor. I wish that I could sing it as well as you. You really do have a good singing voice!
Thanks- trying to transition from A to Bm to A#dim to F#dim 7 the way JT does it. It’s hard for my fat fingers to play A the way he does it, subsequently that F# is pesky for me. I may just do some cheats since this is for a sing along thing we’re doing so who cares. Great video. Picked up many things i was missing thanks to you.
Hi Jon! Really appreciate the lessons - LOTS of valuable content. Going to leave here a few requests for potential lessons (within the genre of Neil Young impersonations) that no other tutorial is of yet to nail the feel of the right hand. All great renditions - Dallas Green on Q TV : Comin Home Dallas Green on MySpace Transmissions: What makes a man / As much as I ever could / The GIrl Dallas Green at Triple M : Nutshell / Two coins Dallas Green at Guitar Centre: Silver and Gold Dallas Green at Untidy Desk: Golden State John MayerVEVO acoustic : Queen of California / Shadow days Cheers
Do me a favor. .. 1) Search TH-cam for.some good live performances of the song with good angles on the guitar hand 2) Find any existing lessons/chords/tabs on the song anywhere on the internet 3) Work with them a bit and make an argument to me that there's something I can add to the existing material that hasn't been done already. I'm trying to build a wikiversity course on how to play and sing in every style, and I don't want to repeat material that already exists. Does that makes sense?
What in the world do you have all over your right hand ...really?lol ...Just cut your nails and work it from there,if you cant grow nails. Nice lesson and presentation :)
Scott Collom Hate to tell you, homes, James Taylor himself uses false nails. He, like many other guitarists, Has found that there are natural nails just can’t hack it against steel strings, and Alaska pics create a lot more consistency. I’ve done natural nails, superglue nails, and I sound Alaska text to be by far my favorite solution and I don’t think I’ll ever go back permanently. Different strokes for different folks though…
@@jonmichaelswift I have gone down the Acrylic nail path before myself,as I get older my nails just get weaker...However I have never been able to use finger picks I now just keep them short.I don't know how you do it..lol

Also wanted to add that sing with the lesson makes a huge difference. And a good voice in tune.
masterful!!!
Excellent playing and love your voice. Makes me want to try it for sure.
You bet! Though do more than try! Get out the guitar and DO!!!
Love this lesson thank you. Is there any chance you could do a tutorial for ‘Blossom’ by James Taylor too please?
Hmm, it might be a while before I get into song tutorials again but I will keep that in mind!
What are you covering your pick fingers with? To avoid calluses?
Jon where did you get those fingers picks you are using?

consider it noted, I'll see what I can do! No promises, but I'll look at this stuff and see how it might fit in to the master scheme!
no worries - it was worth a try.
great lesson Jon Michael. another great lesson would be Gordon Lightfoot (A Painter Passing Through). he uses different chord shapes I believe.
