Very interesting to see how others in the UK get on growing Papaya. Just had some seedlings sprout and am interested in the next steps...

Papaya are like Cassava in that they thrive on neglect. The more you leave them be the better they grow, up to a point of course. One thing is for certain: overwatering and root disturbance are absolute killers at any phase of their lives.

Hi! I'm from the Philippines. Just wanna thank you for making this video. I used it for my son's project about Papaya Seed Growth & Development. It was indeed very useful. Hope to watch more videos from you soon. God bless. 🇵🇭

    After watching your videos
on growing papaya seeds I decided to give it a try. I live in UK.
30.11.18 put seeds in wet tissue, 5 weeks later they
germinated. I planted the seedlings near a radiator and they grew 4cm in just
over week. They look nothing like yours, they even look like weeds.
    Next question will they bear
fruit this year, how tall will they get. I would love to plant them in the
ground but what about our winters. I live in Croydon in Surrey UK. Many thanks,
Poppy - very informative videos which inspired me.

They may be a different variety. I started mine at the wrong time of year and they died when it got cold. They need a lot of sun and warmth. Apparently it is possible for them to fruit in 6-8 months. if you get them going early enough and they get enough sunlight you could possibly get fruit on them this year. If not you’ll need to overwinter them indoors in the brightest area of your house and hope they survive.
As I say mine died but this is all info that I have read.
      Good luck with them.

Hello Kit, thanks for the reference videos. Sorry to hear that the seedlings did not make it to the tree stage. Did the roots aggressively move down to the rocks and rot? Maybe the weather? Your video help me to confirm my new shoots 3:30 I have in the ground. It's been 1 week since planting feb2020.

Thanks Chas. I started them at the wrong time of year and the weather got to cold I think. I’m trying again this year.
Good luck with yours. Thanks for watching.

@@GrowWithKit Sorry to hear that. I am preparing to grow papayas (and passion fruit). I am just back from a trip to Thailand, where I took the opportunity to source some seeds from local growers there. I live in Bournemouth, and we have pretty mild weather here compared to some other parts of the UK. Fingers crossed then.

@@francetim I'm wondering if Kit's Papaya died from excessive watering. I saw on the soil surface that particular moss you get with overwatering, and perhaps they needed a larger pot and less water. I've had no end of trouble with bringing them on after seedling stage. It is quite a skill to get them to a sizeable stage, and apart from overwatering the other killer is moving the roots - they HATE any root disturbance. These are tricky little buggers to bring on. My best though was 15 years, and just a few weeks ago I lost it due to not getting it indoors before a savage overnight frost. That is a real killer for Papaya. Hope this helps folk.

@@francetim Hi Tim, I'm just the other side of the Forest and those nearest the coast can grow pretty much anything. You're very lucky. I recall seeing an Ensete Ventricosum living permanently outside at the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens some years ago. They are incredibly lucky there.

@@GrowWithKit I have been trying too grow these for the last four years, and just about to give it another go.
Every year they get to about 6 inches and then suddenly die, I have had then in full sunlight, others in shaded areas and can not work out what is going wrong.
The germination seems to be easy, i don't bother with the fridge or drying them out and i would say about 80% will pop up.
If you find out what is going wrong, it would be interesting to know.

We can’t plant them outside in the uk because the cold would kill them over winter. If you live somewhere warm where they can survive outside through the whole year, I’d plant them out at around 6-12 inch
