This is the most emotionally devastating song John ever wrote... The pain, the abandonment, the rejection all crushed into a beautiful expression of honesty.

Yes,,the saddest song John ever wrote!! The pain of being abandoned by both parents!! I think his parents were too selfish,,they only cared about themselves.,,and made their son's life miserable...his entire life. For John said,,he lost his mother twice. Just when he was getting closer to her,,,a speeding police car ran her down and she killed her. She was only 44. John,,absent mindly did the same to his son,,Julian..just when he was getting to know him better,,,he cleaned up of drugs..wanted to start over,,and just then,,that jerk,,evil maniac shot and killed John,,at the age of 40. The Lennon curse i think died when John died. It's clear and blessings now for Julian.

It's not a song but a masterpiece and a hit. Who's listening this masterpiece in 2024? I'm sure John Lennon sang this hit with all his heart and all he felt. It's just a masterpiece.

Naprosto souhlasím. John měl neuvěřitelný talent. Zpíval, hrál a skládal svým krásným srdcem❤.

      Lennon is "the man".
His strength here is undeniable, and heart breakingly honest.
My own father died in December '71 Four years later I got this LP. I listened to it endlessly, whether sober or soaring high on LSD. Everytime I heard this song I cried like a baby knowing my own mother, too, would one day die. She died in 2009.. Tell the people in your life that you care about that you love them. After their dead its too late.
Forgiveness and gratitude bring peace. Good luck.
(And it still makes me cry.)

Methinks that he was saying sorry to his own children for becoming his being absent from important moments in their life. Of course, he didn't intentionally abandon his children like his father did to him. It was the trappings of celebrity of being arguably the most famous Pop star of the modern era that separated him from his children

Heard this one for the first time today, and I am already 75. It moved me to tears. Most of our parents never quite matured emotionally driven by life's circumstances - we should not resent them. Each Generation faced its own challenges.... My Dad died afflicted by Alcohol addiction. I resented that for some time - but now I am at peace about it. He was otherwise a good and kind man.

Life is a struggle but at 4 yrs old, it came too early. Today, children are still being abused.

John and Paul's best work were with the Beatles. As solo artists, in my opinion, John wasn't as good as Paul. I was surprised and dissapointed, but it is what it is. PLASTIC ONO BAND was highly personal and made at a time where he was very messed up and wrote and recorded for therapy. I can see that but it really isn't that great of a record. I have lost so many people in my life, from misery to pain, and I'm still here, I chose to live, while my parents are headed for a divorce, they're both fighting for their rights, while I'm here in the void, just nowhere to go except Beatles' music that has been beside me all this time ... I am screaming as John within.

That fact that you find meaning and solice in the lyrics means you have a soul, the thing John had pointed out on occasions. He transenderd different religions leading to people from these religions respecting him. The eternal light will always shine for people who never give up. My biological parents left my brother and I at 4, but we were adopted, although my adopted parents weren't perfect they still had love and believed . We have gone on to marry with children. Lennon wrote this while he was undergoing "Primal Scream" therapy, where he was dealing with a lot of issues that were detailed in the lyrics: He lost his mother at a crucial period in his life to a drunk-driving, off-duty policeman who ran her over in a crosswalk, and his aunt Mimi raised him, which explains the line, "Mother you had me, but I never had you." His father, a merchant seaman, left him for the sea and for work. "I wanted you, you didn't need me" explains his feelings about his dad. Lennon's primal screaming on this song expresses the pain of his childhood.

I blame him mostly though, he was my Father (I refer to him as Father or his name, "Dad" is an earned title) and had the responsibility to stand by me, I will never repeat his harmful choices and will be a much better emotional available and present parent from my experience.

John's parents abandoned him when he was only 5 and since the first 5 years of a person's life is crucial for things like character development (this is a fact, look it up) it probably, almost definitely, impacted him to do the same to Julian. Also, since his mother didn't try to become a part of his life until he was a teenager (15-16, don't remember the exact numbers), and got ripped away from him 2-3 years later, that probably caused him to him to try to mend his relationship with Julian when HE was a teenager as well (again, I think it was 15-16, dont remember the exact numbers) and like his own mother, got ripped away from the child he was trying to have a relationship with in 1980, 4-5 years after he tried to mend the relationship with the child he neglected for so long, just like his mother.

Being abandoned by his parents at five was bad enough. If you know the history of John, then you know that was just the beginning. His Aunt Mimi's husband who helped her raise John after his abandonment died when John was 15. His mother (who he began to establish a relationship with in his teens) was killed when he was 17. His best friend (Stuart Sutcliffe) died when he was 22. Brian Epstein who he was close to (despite his comments to the contrary) died when John was 27. Mal Evans who John was also close to (and possibly the only person John never spoke badly of other than Ringo) died when John was in his mid 30s, etc .....

John was deeply troubled by his dad abandoning him, by his Mom leaving him at his aunt and by her death at the time when they finally started to bond. I can somewhat understand why he had so complicated relationships for so long. I was lucky to have both parents in my life and yet I still deal with feelings like that I didn't fulfill my dad's expectations, that I'm a disappointment for him, that my Mom never gave me a consoling hug, never said that I did something well etc. My self-esteem was badly affected, although I believe they didn't do it on purpose. God bless you, John.

He doesn't even reach his feet without relying on religious texts, although his fans want the opposite, that is, that George is better than John. Never, never, never, nor in music, nor in lyrics.

Perhaps she was fucking up the live performances with her shrieks because... fame and public image had stolen John's life from him. She needed him to see that loving his family, his son, her, himself... would heal his soul. I had not see things this way. I don't even know if it's true, knowing very few details. But it is a good story. A sad story. It lends credit in my eyes to the idea that his assassination was convenient to those who needed to make an example of anyone trying to steer public thought towards love and peace. John's was a total rejection of status and pride, the two things that the State will always need people to have and be influenced by to keep its power over them.

    I needed you
    But you didn't need me
    So
    I just got to tell
    Goodbye
    Goodbye
    Children, don't do
    What I have done
    I couldn't walk
    And I tried to run
    So
I just got to tell you
    Goodbye
    Goodbye
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama don't go
    Daddy come home
    Mama…
    - John Lennon

this song is the embodiment of how it feels to be abandoned. especially when you're very young
The pain in his voice is gut wrenching . I miss him so much
The most honest songwriter ever and the best, in my humble opinion.

I lost my mother due to COVID, last year. She was 44 back then, and I was about to graduate. Honestly, it has been terrible ever since then. I've been trying to cope with things changing, now that I'm employed and have got my dad (who's also about to retire within an year).
Personally, this track has been so much relatable, in fact the whole album. I don't even know what to say. Apologies for dragging it till now. All I'm gonna say is, you don't know what it takes until you've been through the same.

So sorry for the loss of your mother, Arijit.
Grief is a terrible journey that we somehow endure, one day at a time, one moment to the next.
Best wishes to you as you go 🕊️✨

@@timbaker4253 what an obnoxious question. You shouldn't push your agenda over someone sharing their personal grief. I'm so sorry for your loss Arijit. I hope you and your Dad are doing ok. I bet your mom is really proud of you. My Mom is going through a tough battle with cancer at the moment, so I empathize with your pain and heartache. Look after yourself 💚

This video makes the song much more sad. The part where it says “daddy come home”and shows a picture of John and Julian is heartbreaking because they could never had a good relationship, when it was getting better John was killed. The last 2 minutes where they put all the pictures is very sad.

I think John has stripped down in this song. Deserves our respect, few artists would do that.

@@hw343434 y'know, not all art needs to be or is necessarily a personal stripping down. I was merely suggesting that the tradition of baring one's soul is solid but there is plenty of fantastic and even revelatory music that ISN'T a personal nude fest. to compare one artist to another and measure their worth based on how much of their soul they've bared is absurd.
