Try putting a small tube as a hide in the small bin for the hognose as well, and try leaving the food item in the tube...works great for Emily and Ed with Snake Discovery and they work with hognoses alot
I had to get "frog juice" from reptilinks for my hognose when she was a baby and it helped a lot. They eat reptiles and amphibians, so it helps to start them off. Just a drop or two on a pinky and they should eat. Once they get the hang of eating, you can wean them off the frog juice.
The new mossy frogs are adorable, and have the perfect camouflage! I also love geckos, I hope to get a crested gecko one day. Thanks for sharing your reptiles, they’re so interesting as they’re fairly uncommon pets here in the uk!
For my picky eating snakes, I thaw the pinky in sodium free chicken broth. I put the remainder of the broth in an ice cube tray and freeze. The next time I feed, I drop a cube or two in the warm water I'm using to thaw.
Thank you for describing how your Gargoyle gecko is bigger than your crested Gecko. I see so many huge Cresties and I wonder if I did something wrong. I love my collection of geckos.
It's awesome when you can give your animals larger enclosures, recently moved into my own house and now my reptiles will also revive a housing upgrade with some natural sunlight. The rented apartment was like a cave.
You can rub the mouse on the frogs back to sent them. Give that ago, put in a small tub to feed with the lid on ( a circle tub is good so it runs into it more)
Great video as always beautiful animals, did you know there is also other species of hognoses you could get blonde hognose, speckled, madgascan giant :) also you can use frog scented stuff on the pinkies also what ive done for my hoggies, is tuna chunks they will eat then can scent the pinkie on the tuna oil they will eat it, couple weeks later after doing that the pinkie on its own
I'm sure you're going to get tons of advice on the hognose 😂 I do have things I'd adjust and consider which I'll mention, some of which you said you already plan on doing. But, the best thing I can say (I have 6 hognoses, including 2 I've hatched) is whatever you try, take your time. Don't try something new every feeding. Give each change at least 2 tries before doing something else. Sometimes it's just difficult as all hell. One of my hatchlings ate at the very first offering at 6 days old, while the other didn't eat for 100 days. ONE HUNDRED days. When she finally ate, it was such a celebratory moment 😂. One of my adult boys is just finicky and occasionally goes off feed for a few weeks. My adult girls are champs and never miss a meal, even when they're in shed. For things I'd adjust or consider, or just have on my list of things to try: •Ask your breeder what their temperature and humidity settings were and match it. Ask what their feeding process was and match that as well. •Definitely smaller enclosure. Something the size of a pencil box (like the size of a Spacemaker from the 90s). And clutter it up as much as possible. Anxious hognoses do well in small enclosures for a long time, until they gain confidence and are comfortable with you being in their space. My 3 yearlings are in 6qt containers and are just now about ready for a size upgrade. •Black out 3 of 4 enclosure sides. •Since you have frogs, I'd take advantage and use those to scent mice before trying other food options. Other potential options are: chicken hearts, scenting with tuna juice or Vienna sausage juice, Reptilinks. •The day before youre going to offer food, remove the water dish. This is a tip from JMG Reptiles. Of course, put it back either after eating (hopefully), or by the next day whenever you remove the uneaten food item. •If there's no interest, slowly approach with the mouse and touch to the snakes lips. Move slow, and if the snake is tongue flicking, stop and wait and see. If the snake is throwing a fit, then do drop feeding. •Use toilet paper tubes/PVC tubes as feeding spots.
It's time for them to be in brumation. We got our baby snake in December and she didn't eat until March. Some snakes will not eat after the weather changes. We've had 2 different snakes like that. No matter how warm you keep them, it's like they just know.
OMG I love seeing your lezards!!!! Hognose are the only snake I really want and My BF don't want me tu have one at all ... 😢 He scared of snakes ... And even if I remembers him that I worked my fear of spiders he don't want one at all ... 😢😢😢 The baby you got is soooo cute!!!! And your geckos are so beautiful!!!!
She did a video on them a while back i believe they are bug catching kits from the target dollar spot so you'll have to hope they bring them back next spring/Summer
Really enjoy being able to share your pet adventures, and seeing various different animals that call your place home. also... Pet room envy here! Love from 🦘
The enclosure for the tricolor would probably work better with the sides and back being covered (with cork boards or any sort of terrarium backdrop). Generally I like to ask the breeder what food and size they were feeding, if the snake is used to f/t and what day of the week they were usually feeding. Especially at the beginning I feel it's easier if feeding habits are similar to what the snake is already used to (with snakes that are a bit more insecure).
I live in Brazil, so we have tricolors hognoses pretty much everywhere. I even had to stop some students trying to kill one in the university i went to a few year ago, because it was in a very green almost rural area, so the snake was only living their regular lives and the university got in the way. But I understand people being scared of them in the middle of the city, specialy because of little childrem and cats and dogs who always want to play with the snakes 'cause they look really cute. And here we have loads of different ones that look really similar with only one specific being medicaly significant venomous, wich are the most rare ones, but people are really scared of them because it's really hard to tell them apart. Their popular name is "Coral" in here, by the way.
Yeah I agree with Jek in the comments you liked. Check out the tricolor hog nose snake hatching videos from Emily and Ed, snake discovery. They have the best advice with picky, baby hognose snakes. I don't know how old the baby is but baby hognose eat better with scented foods from reptilinks I think I butchered their name but they ship online too 😅. You have frogs which is a very popular hognose scent in their shop that you can try out😊
Sometimes with hognoses they'll eat better with frog or toad scented mice So take the tiny piece of mice and rub it on the frog/toads back and then try to get the hog to eat like that
The tricolour hognose snake is fossorial and not related to the westerns! They won't be out much, I literally see my babies maybe once a week 😂. I have 2 babies that I'm growing up to be a pair.
They are the easiest reptile and probably animal in general you can have, aside from tarantulas. I have just fed him a couple times a wk and misted him heavily every other day or 2 and he’s been good. Super easy diet too, but I supplement with crickets and stuff bc he does like insects on top of the powder food I use. No heat. No lights but I’ve used UVB on and off throughout the years. some people really think they need it and others disagree so 🤷♀️ 10/10 animal
@ Thanks so much for taking the time to respond that was very helpful! I think the heat/lighting is what i’m mostly confused about. I live in the UK so it can get pretty cold during winter, and i’ve seen people say it’s good to use some sort of heat source if where you live gets cold, but I don’t know what the best light/heat source to get is because I see so many mixed opinions lol (i’ve also heard cresties can be sensitive to heat n can easily get heatstroke so i’m a little afraid to try)
I mean no disrespect towards you or Snake Discovery. However, they are not a good source for guidance on how to get a picky snake to eat. They are at best surface level and some of their suggestions I'd not recommend (generally), especially for hognose snakes.
I just saw a video from snake discovery, and they were saying not to handle (I think hognose), until they've eaten 4 times for you, for a new pet hognose.
Hognoses are not really meant to eat rodents which tends to be the problem more often then not and can actually cause obesity and other nutritional issues when fed long term ideally you'd want whole prey frogs but sourcing those are amost impossible the other option is frog reptilinks which tend to work really well
Try putting a small tube as a hide in the small bin for the hognose as well, and try leaving the food item in the tube...works great for Emily and Ed with Snake Discovery and they work with hognoses alot

Community support for good ideas 👍
That's one cool looking baby snake! I found a baby jumping spider in a basket of guavas over the weekend, tried to trap it, but it go away.
The new mossy frogs are adorable, and have the perfect camouflage! I also love geckos, I hope to get a crested gecko one day. Thanks for sharing your reptiles, they’re so interesting as they’re fairly uncommon pets here in the uk!

Those frogs are cute AF! I love your new additions 💜💖
I wish the video was longer! I love seeing all your reptiles and amphibians 😊❤

Just living vicariously through you. My husband said no more mouths to feed lol.

Hognose snakes are the cutest snakes ! They're the possums of the snake kingdom coz they play dead !
I love your videos and aesthetic, such a cute video!!

I love all of this .
Sometimes with hognoses they'll eat better with frog or toad scented mice
So take the tiny piece of mice and rub it on the frog/toads back and then try to get the hog to eat like that

At first, I was oh love the green in the hair, though is it Elphaba ish... Nope it matches the cute frogs which is even better.
KAT✨🖤
If your hognose still isn’t eating after you try a couple more common solutions you might try blacking out three sides of the bin
The tricolour hognose snake is fossorial and not related to the westerns! They won't be out much, I literally see my babies maybe once a week 😂. I have 2 babies that I'm growing up to be a pair.

do you have any tips on caring for crested geckos? I’ve always wanted to get one but see so much varied advice online

Hi Tarantula Kat 😁👋
Snake Discovery is a good source for hognose info

Your hat is super cute. Can I ask where you purchased from?
The frogs are so cute
I jumped so hard, and got so far, but in the end, I'm just a little froggy
It’s so nice to have men around sometimes…😊
Thank you 🎉🎉❤❤❤❤ see you soon
Are those mossy frogs louder than your cricket species
