I couldn't wait for this 'til Tuesday album to come out! Great song. Great memories. Aimee Mann is just a brilliant songwriter...her newest,Charmer, is such a great tune. She also appears on Steve Vai's latest, The Story of Light, on the tune No More Amsterdam. It's lovely.
The original studio version is found on the not promoted third 'til tuesday record, 'Everything's Different Now', which is my favorite 'til tuesday record, though the band was imploding. It features the should've been hits; "Everything's Different Now", "Rip In Heaven", "(Believed You Were) Lucky", and "The Other End of the Telescope". A remastered version can be heard on, 'Coming Up Close: A Retrospective', which is awesome. Thanks, lorusinaqua!
Aimee Mann and Elvis Costello co-wrote it together and Elvis sings backing vocals with Aimee on the original version. It appears on the album, _Everything's Different Now_ by Til Tuesday - which is a VERY good album and well worth seeking out. Elvis Costello later covered it himself (with some alternate lyrics) on _All This Useless Beauty_ which is a collection of songs which he had either written for, or had been performed by other artists.
"Everything's Different Now' (1988) was the final chapter in the Til Tuesday saga and also arguably Aimee's first solo album. It's a great record which really showed that she was an artist and song-writer to be reckoned with. But I think "Lost In Space" (2002) is her real masterpiece. Her songwriting is as strong as ever, and the production and over-all sound of the album have a continuity which in retrospect, make its' follow-up, "The Forgotten Arm", seem like a perfectly natural progression.
Liner notes? How about the song credits which clearly state it's by Mann & Costello. There was even an interview in an old Mojo wherein Aimee Mann talks about how it was written.
Beautiful song, one of my favorites from Aimee. It doesn't matter if she wrote it or not. If a songwriter gives you a song to call your own, it's yours. Rumor has it that John Lennon wrote "Blinded by the Light" which has Bruce Springsteen's name on it and was made famous by Manfred Mann. Neither Springsteen nor Manfred Mann can write like the lyrics in "Blinded by the Light." Compare much of Lennon's works of poetry to the song, and see the similarities. It's Aimee's.
snuffelupaggus--so aptly named your brain function is like a toddler that watches sesame street...Aimee has more RAW talent than practically anyone around. The original song on the album is still great without Costellos back up vocals but can't say the same thing about the lead vocals.

"Everythings Different Now " is her masterpiece.
All the songs are great..."Crash and Burn" is my favorite one but I like them all.
Yes, I think so too. Every track is brilliant.

That's 22 years too long, dude :)
does anyone remember elvis costello - great question
I do, I'm a huge fan. You should catch him live sometime, he's awesome.
i still think that this til tuesday album is one of the most under rated cds of the time
Hmmm. Such a shame about the sound quality, she deserves better.
Agreed, Bruce!
I think the reason Aimee Mann is recording this is because..... she WROTE IT! Try reading the liner notes people.
@brucefetter Totally concur.

Ha ha Bruce's entire debut album is in the style of Blinded by the Light, all self-conscious wordplay...he got much better by his second record.
Aimee wrote the tune, Elvis reworked the lyrics.
Actually I think Elvis Costello wrote this one . . .
Try reading the song credits. Or even Wikipedia.
This song is a Costello-Mann co-write.
