However, after the construction of the project started, the mountains were excavated, rocks were blasted, and waste soil and dregs were left indiscriminately, causing serious water and soil erosion and causing very serious damage to the natural vegetation and ecological environment at the southern foot of Jiuhua Mountain. Before the project was completed, it was criticized by China's "People's Daily": the Jiuhuang Highway (Jiuhuashan to Huangshan), which was built in 1996, did not take any environmental protection measures, resulting in the artificial cutting of some important water systems and serious damage to important landscapes.
