PSA: When you apply the Basilicanum Grey, make sure it's going on smooth and not contracting. Leadbelcher primer is so smooth many paints have trouble gripping it, especially shades and contrast. Once you have that grey dry though, it'll give a much better surface and so you won't have to worry after that. This is another reason why it's important to hit the ENTIRE model with this grey If it is having trouble gripping, brush it about until it flattens out and behaves.
OMG …..Dude Absolutely awesome I have used ur technique on my Templars and I am greatful to u 🙏 Now to decide between Black Legion Chaos Marines or Word Bearers……u have made me pause and reflect and turn to my personal Black Library Books and get back to the lore and choose!!!!
I'm actually really glad I found this video. I recently painted my army as Alpha Legion with the exact same scheme(but swapping Nuln Oil for the Basilicanum Grey, and Akhelian Green for Flesh Tearers Red). I'm planning on re-painting them to Word Bearers, and I planned to just paint over the Akhelian Green with more Leadbelcher, re-shade and dry brush, and then cover the panels once more with Flesh Tearers. This vid has helped me confirm that plan will actually work, so thank you very much!
Loved the video and used it as a guide. I Omitted the stormhost silver as it brightened the guys too much. Leadbelcher, nuln oil, and fleshtearer red was enough. Thank you for the video
Go for it! It's a quick scheme. I'd just do vehicles straight up Word Bearers Red to save yourself some hassle. You can also pre-highlight them by spraying your troops black, and then Leadbelcher from the top 45 degrees. It'll give you some natural highlights on the red.
I did the same but i use nazdreg yellow for gold , armageddon dust for base, and zandri dust for tabard , wraithbone+ skeleton horde for bones. Nice video dude easy way to get a good table top marine
@@gyriongyrion4623 Unless you use an airbrush, no it looks terrible. It doesn't go on smoothly at all, and I say that from trying to paint a Venomcrawler metallic blue. Ended up having to use regular Kantor Blue base paint to fix it.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Oh damn really that sucks, I was going to do mainly normal paints, just metallic blue on the main panels inbetween the trims
@@gyriongyrion4623 A cheap airbrush from amazon will do it. If you'd rather do it with a brush you're out of luck with Contrast on areas that big. Give it a go if you like, but consider yourself warned! :p
If you get to models that have large flat areas such as vehicles etc, you'll need to buy a cheap airbrush to apply the contrast paint or you'll get brush marks. I bought one off Amazon that came with a mini compressor for £35 (~$50) and that has done the job nicely. I use it for vehicle camo too. Alternatively, you can paint your vehicles Khorne Red or Word Bearers Red and they won't look out of place next to metallic Infantry at all. It's less than ideal to have a shiny tank, for obvious reasons!
The simplest 'daemonic' Flesh is Rakarth Flesh shaded with Druchi Violet, and then the raised areas re-layered with Rakarth Flesh. You can use a combination of Druchi Violet, Carrobourg Crimson and Reikland Fleshshade - blending them whilst they're still wet - to achieve some nice transitions from pale human to darmonic flesh.
Hey Man, awesome guide as always. I still use your night lords contrast guide religiously which got me into painting said legion in the first place. Never really liked word bearers lore/ gameplay wise too much but I like your color scheme here so much that I might just use it on the votann minis I bought recently, playing them as an alternative Ymir kin.
Just knocked out 5 Terminators and a Terminator Lord in less than 45 minutes. I couldn't believe it! Totally chuffed. Thanks again! This will be the way I'll be painting my Word Bearers from now on. I can't believe how easy it is
Defo going to be painting my CSM in this style! With Eldritch Storm coming out soon, would you suggest painting the Forgefiend model the same way? I've heard mix things about contrast and vehicles/bigger models.
Hi! No, I would paint it Khorne Red and recess shade with Nuln Oil to darken it down. Contrast over large flat areas looks crap, and it's seldom you'd want a shiny, metallic vehicle if you're going into battle!
This might be a stupid question, but being that I haven't experimented with all of the do's and don'ts of the hobby yet, did you prime the miniature in leadbelcher, or did you use one of the primers recommended for contrast paints underneath the basecoat? Since those are something you're using a lot of here. Thanks for a great guide! Very insightful.
Straight up leadbelcher spray! GW recommend either Wraithbone or Grey Seer because contrast paints work best over lighter colours, so you can use them to their full effect. You can actually use contrast paints over lots of different colours to achieve different results, as long as the underlying colour isn't too dark.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 That's very interesting, thank you. I assumed the contrast-specific primers left a texture that worked better with the consistency of the paints or some such. It's a relief though, since I've enjoyed contrast paints so far, and GW don't ship sprays to my country anymore. So I was a bit worried I'd lose the use of contrast paints without the specific primers. If it's just a question of colour or metallics, I imagine I'll be able to find replacement primers from other companies that roughly match the Wraithbone or Leadbelcher GW ones.
Another solid vid! I do my best to follow your paint selections, but I always seem short 1 or 2 paints. Would you have some recommendations for the "essentials"?
It totally depends what army you're wanting to do buddy - some require a lot more 'essentials' than others! If you let me know what army you're wanting to do, I can list out the paints that I'd go for as a bare minimum.
@@criticalhitwargaming5290 Now that I've pretty much finished my Space Wolves, I was goin to try to paint my Vostroyans. Instead of the classic red and golds, I was goin to go for a more black/grey cloth and silver/gold armour. Any recommendations would be much appreciated! The question was pretty open I realised. I think I meant more would you always pick basilicanum grey over Nuln Oil, or Flesh Tearers over Blood Angels contrast paint? And cheers for the reply!
@@Dan-jq6rj Nuln Oil, for sure. You can use it for a lot more than Basilicanum. As for Flesh Tearers vs Blood Angels, I'd probably pick Flesh Tearers, as long as I had a pot of Mephiston Red handy for everything else. For blacks and greys, I'd go for Eshin Grey and Dawnstone for a flat grey. Your scheme sounds decent! If you look up critical_hit_wargaming on Instagram I can offer you some better advice!
If you want some extra bright highlights, use Runefang Steel as an edge highlight on the silver before you put the red on it. That'll get you an extra shine on the edges.
The easiest way is to paint it Khorne Red or Word Bearers Red, so not metallic. To paint large areas with metallic metal requires an airbrush, in which case you can use the method in the video but apply it with that instead. Using non-metallic vehicles alongside Infantry painted like this looks absolutely fine, however.
I see many people priming their minis with silver or gold but wouldnt it be better if they primed them in black and then basecoated the whole mini with silver?
You can do it that way if you like, adds an extra 30 minutes per model though to get a smooth thin coat of either of them with multiple layers. You don't get a noticeably different result either way. May as well save yourself the time and prime with the colour most of the model is going to be!
If you replace the Red with Akheelan Green contrast paint you have what I did for my Alpha Legion Kill Team You also Switch the cloth from Black to red in my recipe
Rakarth Flesh! All the way. Shade with Reikland Fleshshade, then re-layer Rakarth Flesh avoiding the deepest recesses. Highlight the raised areas with Pallid Wych Flesh and job done. If you watch the video on painting faces on the channel, just replace with colours with Rakarth Flesh and Pallid Wych. If you want a less Chaos, more human Flesh you can use Cadian and Kislev as normal.
