    I wouldn't change the design of the first one. You need the 1X8 to create an overhang on a slope so the water doesn't run along the walls and then inside the house. Also Cutting the 4 corners of the floor is quick and easy to do on a chop saw and also important, because if water does get inside, it won't accumulate in any of the 4 corners. I like that design.

    Thank you for really informative video!
    Too bad I did not see that 6 months earlier when I was building few bird houses for my garden - opening of the front side is really a great idea. But next ones I will make in few months will definitely be like this. 🙂
    There is one thing I probably can't agree fully - making simple tilted roofs is not really time consuming nor difficult. Two sides with tilted upper part is just one cut by a saw: e.g. a 60 cm long plank cut at an angle in the middle gives two sides for one bird house. Marking of cuts takes a blink of an eye when a template is made. My process was: a 3 meter plank divided into 60 cm sections by hand sawing (4 cuts), then marking tilted cuts using a strong cardboard template and making those 5 additional cuts to produce sides of 5 bird houses. I did not cut back or front side at angle (that would be doable but not really convenient with a hand saw). All that is even faster with mounted circular saw.
    I also wondered if you have also added birdhouses in woods or orchard(s)?

    My Grandpa did a boys club years ago where they built birdhouses and placed them for ranchers in the Porcupine hills AB ... that's what we need more of these days. We have so many mosquitos in July and Aug here in the Columbia Valley BC ... so close to all the wet lands. The Dragonflies are plentiful and there's some bats and swallows but they can't keep up.

    Enjoyed life on your farm very much! Fyi, according to another kindhearted steward, the slope of the roof on your favorite birdhouse is to keep water from entering the birdhouse entrance. Here is the link:

    I’m an industrial designer Someone please discuss with me!!! So I honestly say it all depends on the bird but all birds lay nest out in the open, most if not all bird houses are close, this is actually closer to a cave and not at all natural to the bird, yes it offer protection but it takes away from the natural aspect of the bird and making them dependent on humans. Isn’t the best solution to provide open platforms with minimal roofing for rain?

    • @tomrudd1118
      @tomrudd1118 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there. A lot of smaller birds are cavity nesters and don't nest in the open.(Titmouse, Chickadees, Wrens, House Finches ....)
      They live in drain pipes and knot holes in roofs and trees and swings sets and ect....
      By building houses for Blue Birds, they don't have to search for old growth trees with knots, which are fewer every year and we get to track and monitor their migration and numbers.
      Plus you can use predator guards to make it safer for endangered species, like Blue Birds, to populate and everyone is happy.

    • @roadkxll_

      @@tomrudd1118 yes I did a little more research for my project, it depends on the species of the bird. Not all birds have the same requirement and needs, thanks for the video! (:
