I adore Rogers' music, but I feel like this cover could have gone even further in bringing out the pathos of the original lyrics. There is no more cheery-sounding tragedy in pop music than "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," and I've always hoped for a folk version that would really strip the song to its core. Rogers keeps a lot of the joy, which makes a lot of sense-- it connects the sunshine in her voice to Whitney's. So in both versions, a song about loneliness has never sounded warmer.

Takes huge swinging ones to rearrange this song this radically. Then again it's a clear case of big risk, big reward. Doing a worse version of Whitney never pays off. Doing a great version of herself was a far better choice.
