  • As you probably know, Hoverboard Hub BLDC Motors are design to be slow in speed and high in torque. They are usually configured as a Wye (Y/Star) and this modification enables you to setup your motor as a Delta.
    This tutorial is for who is planning to use Hoverboard Hub Motors for customised projects like 1WD, 2WD E-Scooters or even a 4WD E go-Kart where more speed is required. This modification can increase the speed as much as 3 times and can handle almost same torque.
    Have a try! Worth it a lot!!

    This is super awesome. I built a few hub motor powered skateboards. I haven't quite wanted to go faster than its max (13 mph), but when I do, I'm definitely going to do this. Thanks

    Thank you for showing this process. I use my homemade disc sander powered by one of these motors. But I have to use a higher voltage source to get more rpm. I'll have to change to delta config if I want to use my 25v portable battery pack directly.

    Great job thank you for that I had not realized the performance could improve that much it's as if you bought an expensive e-bike motor and I had no idea that those little things had that much potential hiding inside of there, but then when I think about a hoverboard screaming like that with the modifications it would not have been a safe hoverboard (not even close) it would have been quite the little death trap wouldn't it have? Wow, and a helmet just wouldn't be adequate for keeping someone from injury, you'd need a 100 lb. Full body chainmail bodysuit if you hoped to keep any skin LMFAO 😊😅😂
    Thanks for the awesome video and a mighty fine demonstration of how knowledge and understanding Beats ignorance every time even with all the worthless paper rectangles in the world to throw at it when it comes to realizing maximum potential.
    This unlocks a little secret for me because I had heard that Tongshen mid Drive kits in every tiar all use the same exact motor and now I know what that really means 😊 they're just configured differently and with the right modifications I can pretty much get the $1,500 one when I buy the $250 - $300 most basic one and unlock its potential.

    I watched few videos with this mod to understand whats going on
    TO All who dont understand this : this is NOT delta , this is STAR configuration with parralel coils
    before mod it was also star but coils were in series ,because motor controller works like a variable frequency drive it runs
    slower without this mod , in essence youve just shorten the distance of wire , where u get 3x speed , bcs controller is same frequency , where youre exitacion is 3 times shorter, also current is 3x higher so u can burn out your controller or wiring ( find a controller for more current ). If someone wants this to use as a generator , this mod would only drop voltage by a third , but also increase current. FYI delta does not have neutral point.

    To clear up the terminology the Y vs D connection does not affect rpm. This motor is a 30 pole 3 phase motor. As 30 poles the motor will spin at 200 rpm when fed 50Hz. This rewiring is reducing the number of poles inthe motor and hence the rpm increases, and the torque decreases.

    • @geckosvanity1667
      @geckosvanity1667 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So if you rewire and increase the number of poles it will increase torque? Maybe increase torque and use the wheel and a gear for a transmition for a small gokart or ebike

    Love your don’t be shy attitude I was very impressed. Is there any way you could make a delta interface so to speak a plug and play device that turns a star configuration into a delta? I feel the coil wires are so quantumly entangled it probably won’t work. I noticed these motors don’t take a lot of power and are tourque and throaty. Good job brother.

    • @Attic-Toy-Design
      @Attic-Toy-Design  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Delta is kind of 'parallel' winding configuration and the reason to cut the wires is to find out the right windings for the new delta setup configuration. The three soldered wires must to be removed to be able to make the new delta configuration. There is a drawing picture in the beginning of the video that is very useful for a reference.

  • @bengoldberg8451
    @bengoldberg8451 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    for people wanting to do this: NO, this is NOT delta modded, but a configuration called triple Star. a normal hoverboard motor is 3 individual coils, with 3 coils in parallel for each phase, so 9 total coil sets. normally, 3 in series for each, and 3 together for a y config. delta modding is much simpler than this method in the video, as all it is is you undoing the y configuration's center tap, and wiring all 3 main coil sets in a loop.
    i will make a video at some point on how to actually delta mod motors, which is much simpler than this. however, i am currently messing with this method in the video and it will require INSANE levels of current to mess with, so you absolutely have to rewire the phase wires with higher gauge and temperature resistant wire.

      That is exactly what I thought watching it...why cut each individual coil.
      It is much simpler to just increase the voltage to go faster. If you use a ebike controllerr, most of them can actually run at 60v, so compared to 24 or 36, it would double the speed. You can also use a dc-dc converter to up your battery voltage from 36 to 60, I have some 1200 watt units I used on my ebikes for this.

    Awesome video.. I'm new to these mods, given that even w/o any mods, I run my little hoverboard motor using a 52v battery and a 48v controller, and I get close to 35 Kilometers per hour on my ebike . needless to say the motor gets hot. To prevent any wires from melting, I removed the hall sensors and operate it with a sensor less controller that i bought really cheap, once I took the hall sensor out I replaced the 3 motor wires with 12 gauge (awg) copper cable so it can tolerate the heat. . Will this mod work if the motor is sensor-less ? I would chip in a payment if you were to make a beginners mod video . . for those of us with less experience..

    • @Attic-Toy-Design
      @Attic-Toy-Design  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What a such lovely comment buddy. Keeps me motivated to carry on. Regarding sensor-less, it works but the speed motor controller needs the hall sensor in order to detect the position of the rotating magnet. The control system of the speed controller senses the rotor position and the proper voltage pattern is applied to the motor.

      @@Attic-Toy-Design I tied to rewire second hub motor and test speed yesterday. So, I had 4 wheel mountainboard with two hub motors with delta wiring.
      1) max speed increased from 27km/h to 45km/h (may be it could go faster, but 45 km/h was a little bit scarry on mountainboard)
      2) torque reduced by two or may be tree times.
      3) very slow acceleration and braking.

    Thanks so much for this video - really interesting that you can get 1.8x more RPM with a re-wire.
    One question though - That shrink wrapped group of 3 wires during your disassembly was likely the star point (at 5:20 in video) - is there a reason you went through that whole snip/label/rewire and didn't just wire those directly to the delta points?

    • @VinceAnido
      @VinceAnido ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For what it's worth - I just rewired one without the elaborate labeling, cutting, PCB etc.
      ********Follow this advice at your own risk. I take no responsibility for you blowing up your motor & or controller.*************
      De-solder the star point. (Look at 5:20 in this video)
      Identify each strand as A/B/C - these are the ENDS (use a multimeter in continuity mode)
      On my motor, the winding order of the 'STARTS' was A/C/B (place where colored wires come through the hub and connect to the enameled wires. Green/Yellow/Blue colored wires). This was top to bottom with the hall effect board on the right side. YOURS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
      Wire the END of A to the START of B, the END of B to the START of C, and the END of C to the START of A.
      Take special care to cover all connections to prevent shorts.
      I was able to test mine without fully sealing it back up to make sure I didn't short anything and that it still worked.
      I got about 2.4x RPM (unloaded) after this modification (680rpm->1675rpm). Obviously reduced torque, but I didn't need it for my application.

      The motor's speed and torque capabilities should be the same. This only changes the proportion of voltage and current. You can get the same effect by using a higher voltage battery on the unmodified motor.
