I think it would have been really cool to see you paint the same piece with a watercolor set of your choice to see how that would look compared to how this one turned out. I know the point of the video was to test out inexpensive paint, not to compare anything. I think the painting came out great but you kept mentioning how much farther you could have taken it with different paint so I just wondered what it would have looked like if you had chosen a watercolor set of your liking.

@@paigel8136 yeah i know, I never called the "cheap" stuff bad and I actually use some "quality" products but i just know that before having these supplies I had even cheaper ones and that some people might not even be able to afford for example this paper

@@whiterose1973 dude same! I have a pack of prisma color pencils and 10 copic markers. PAPER! It is so important that when cutting corners that you don’t buy cheap papers! You can use cheaper paint but the frustration level is so much higher with bad paper! Even brushes can be marginalized when painting but the paper is what your painting will live on forever. DaVinci Paints in California has a professional level paint selection in every medium, from watercolor to oils! And they are very very reasonably priced, I even remember spending more on student grade paint cost him more they were not as good as my Da Vinci watercolors! Be safe and take care!

I totally agree about paper! I've started using 100% cotton paper from various brands and experimenting on those, and I think that a thin, flimsy watercolor paper will completely ruin the experience. Out of supplies I'd splurge on, I'd definitely choose paper

      Inexpensive supplies list...
For watercolor: try shinhan you can get up to 32 colors for like 28$ or another option is the Paul rubens student range price is around the same as shinhan.
For gouache: the arteza brand is a great starter set and it’s also inexpensive or if you’re willing to have less colors but good quality the 6 pack of winsor and Newton is great but honestly I had it before arteza and after using arteza I don’t use it anymore
For acrylic: the liquitex basics are really good I was worried at first but they have great coverage and they’re easy to use
For markers: ohuhu is the way to go
For pencils: i love my prismacolors and you can actually get them at a decent price now
For pens: I use micron pn they have a plastic nib and give you easy to control line variation
For sketchbooks: if it’s for sketching/practice I use the cannon watercolor spiral bound sketchbook and I use alll my mediums in it and they all work great but for something I’d wanna sale I use fabriono I got 52 sheets for 20$ off amazon.
Hope that gives anyone some ideas or help they may need.

I always buy my supplies on Etsy or eBay. Dealer rowney 18 set was like $16 and the koi 24 set I got for like $15. I also like prima marketing and got tropicals for like $17 (12 set) they're all amazing except koi is just a bit more grainy. You will have to look around for these deals and sometimes get them already opened and tried out (but not really used). And some better paper could be fabriano studio paper. Mine came from Jerry's 11x14in 50 sheets for $25. 25% cotton and so much better than my canson pad lmao

I personally like this little set and have used much much worse at the same price point so in comparison these are decent. I don't use them for anything I would consider finished though, I use them in my sketchbook so that I don't feel pressure to make it look good because I'm using my good supplies. What I've found is that they look better on paper that is not meant for watercolors better than they do on watercolor paper a lot of the time and even the more expensive paints don't shine on that paper. I wasn't feeling so good about the sketchbook I was working in so this was my way of saying "It's just a sketchbook I don't care it doesn't have to be beautiful" and just have fun. I've even dug out the paints I couldn't stand to work with because it was in a similar palette design and filled it with another student grade paint to supplement colors I found myself mixing a lot or was curious about playing with. For my purposes, it's all in how you decide to use them. They're by no means my go to palette and never will be, but they're fun to play with during warmups when I'm feeling in the mood to be a bit messy.

I love that! I think that's a really great mindset to have, and sketchbooks are so important to be free and experiment in, and using a good inexpensive art supply is really freeing if you don't want to feel like you're wasting good paint. I think my set is also super old because of how badly they reactivated, but I found it difficult to produce a nice, finished piece :/ I would reach for these if I'm taking a really chill sketchbook trip to the park and want something compact.

Your painting came out so beautiful despite the struggle with materials. I feel similarly on the topic of buying expensive art supplies vs buying supplies that are right for someone based on current needs. There's sometimes too much brand dependency or elitism in the art community. Like its okay to be a fan of a brand. I just wish more artists wouldn't go overboard, and start getting controlling over other artists about it. Something else I've kept is mind also is that some artists are kind of brand ambassadors for certain products. So I just try out what looks interesting to me, with my own personal budget in mind and tune out everything else I guess.

The first set of watercolors I used were similar to these, really inexpensive and chalky. They were fine, at first, but eventually as I improved or tried to paint something ambitious, I noticed that the paints would not perform in the way that I wanted and it really did become frustrating to paint things and do actual watercolor techniques. It is possible to make art with cheap art supplies, but some art supplies really do "fight you" in a way and it could hinder your progress with the medium after using them for a while. So I definitely agree with buying an affordable primary colors set if its possible for your budget. (Also yes, those Michael's coupons and Jackson's sales are so so nice when they are available!!) Kinda long comment, but yeah loved the video :)

Honestly, whether it's viable or not within your budget, just buy the high end supplies. It's an investment that at the end of the day yall gonna be thankful for, cause yall made the decision. Because I did that even though I am just newbie with art as of now and I am never happier. Because even if your drawing or your painting sucks because god forbit we aren't as good or born talented as these artists (yet; heccin im trying to be positive here xD), at least you don't feel bad and putting the blame on bad quality supplies. At least, yall know it is because you still need to improve skill wise. Which is okay because we are all learning. And like when yall are good like this, then yall can try experiment with inexpensive low end supplies cause yall have skill by the then. Just don't start with terrible supplies cause it's gonna demotivate you so bad ya don't want to draw or paint anymore lol.

I started with a £5 for 32 coloured pencil set from whsmith. Theyre not awful so i created some pretty good realism with them. Only last year did i finally upgrade to artezas coloured pencils😁

For a student grade watercolor set, at that price point, i could recommend the pretty excellent watercolors, u can find them on amazon for about 20 bucks, they are pigmented and transparent, it gives 36 colours, but if you wanna mix them yourself u can still do that

Why do you feel the need to say the same thing over and over again? That’s just a tedious way to present or speak to an audience.

i personaly love working with cheap paints once awhile because of its "broken textures" and broken colors.. i think its fun to have some kind of variety in my sketchbook. something that is very transparent and faded(?). the result might looks ok for one or two days but keeping it for a long time is the biggest problem. they're too powdery and the color can fade even more..

I personally use Jane Davenport watercolor paints. Although they are tiny tins, they are my die hard favorite. Easy for travel and not that bad of a price. She even has watercolor pastels and oh, I just love the quality in her products.

im not a beginner in art, is been years since i paint, yet i can't bring myself to buy expensive art supplies, reasons for that is because i have to stretch my money for more important things and now more because of covid and unemployment, but also because there are soo many good, amazing affordable art supplies out there that why buy costly art? if I were to sell my paintings then yeah maybe ( if I could buy the expensive art supplies that is lol) but since i don't plan on doing that or ever will, think I'm more comfortable with affordable paints and art supplies in general, you can buy more things and still save in comparison with very very expensive art supplies that you might be able to buy one time and never again became they are very expensive. Also, i think that people don't need expensive paint to do a very great/ fantastic painting, your video is the proof of that (even though those watercolors were not the best or nay good at all) but you managed to make an amazing job, I think we artist are a bit too spoiled and i get it, is our work and we want it to last and look good and be of our like, but sometimes we think that if is not expensive art supplies that it won't work. I have even painted with apple barrel paints, I have a whole sketchbook painted with that and it turned out awesome, i even went to Walmart and bought package of them because right now ( this is hard for me to say but) right now is all i can expend on paintings, and of course I'm waiting on my arrtx gouache set ( a very greatset I should say)

I am just learning and ❤️ your vid. I am having trouble w/the tape that I use as it tends to rip some parts of the paper when I pull it off. Yours seem to be a see-through type. Does it seal the paint from running and does it pull off easy? If so do you recommend it ? Name?
