How to Use Charcoal Sticks, Nylon, Pencils - Charcoal Drawing Series, 7 of 8: What You Need to Know

- In this video, we take our drawing one step further and look at the process of starting to apply powder charcoal using nylon and cotton balls with a rubber band. We look at the importance of creating dark values with controlled pressure and gradually layering the charcoal to establish a mood or tone in the artwork.
We then use a kneaded eraser for refining details, such as drawing individual hairs, and see how to avoid smudging charcoal too heavily into the paper. I'll show you have to use a graphite pencil for subtle shading and the significance of using a blending stump to smooth out lines while maintaining control over the charcoal's intensity.
This demo is about a careful balance of building layers to achieve the desired effect.
