How to Use Charcoal Sticks, Nylon, Pencils - Charcoal Drawing Series, 7 of 8: What You Need to Know

In this video, we take our drawing one step further and look at the process of starting to apply powder charcoal using nylon and cotton balls with a rubber band. We look at the importance of creating dark values with controlled pressure and gradually layering the charcoal to establish a mood or tone in the artwork.
We then use a kneaded eraser for refining details, such as drawing individual hairs, and see how to avoid smudging charcoal too heavily into the paper. I'll show you have to use a graphite pencil for subtle shading and the significance of using a blending stump to smooth out lines while maintaining control over the charcoal's intensity.
This demo is about a careful balance of building layers to achieve the desired effect.
