I don't mind roofing and gutters but also understand the difficulty of videoing them. I'm happy with seeing all aspects of your renovation, including any yard stuff. All most enjoyable. BTW, you videoing skills have improved immensely😊.
The stairwell doors are in place because stairwells aren’t heated or cooled. This is common in the 1800s and early 1900s. The doors and door jambs were probably changed out in the 70s or 80s because they would have needed them as school fire breaks. I would be shocked if there was asbestos because of when the building was built. They didn’t start using asbestos in home until the late 1930s and it was widely used in the 1940s. The teeny tiny tubs are actually from the 1950s, cast iron, called the American Standard Tiny Neo-Angle Tubs. Those sockets on the fireplaces are interesting. Can’t wait to see what that’s about. Looking forward to the 3rd floor servants quarters. Thank you for showing us everything
Those drawer closets were usually for cardigans. The style of closet with the pullout is a suit closet. The hooks on the walls were often used for rain coats, belts, scarves and such. Your pal Judy who was an administrator would have a lot of info on why things are the way they are. The closet with the safe was usually in the master bedroom closet for money, passports, jewelry, etc. those large shelf openings you couldn't figure out were possibly for hat boxes, luggage or riding boots and the like. It's what the styles were that decided the layouts of the closets. Thanks for the tour. Glad to see some drying occuring in the walls as the gutters progress.
Actually I find roof+gutter very interesting! I would just put some background music and a timelapse of you working (maybe I wouldn't keep all the understandable "human doing hard work" sounds). And personally I wouldn't interrupt the workflow so often (just maybe full explanation before starting and recap after).
I know it is too early, but I am hoping that you try your best keep as much of the original things as possible. Like whatever floors you can salvage. And I was thrilled you said you would probably keep those amazing doors in that one bedroom. So many cool things in that house. I know a lot of it had go to, but hoping the overall feel of the building stays the same! 🫰Looking forward to more videos. Hope you are staying safe on that roof.
Use pressurized air vs water to charge the water plumbing system to check for any leaks or issue before charging the system with actual water. The air leaks are much easier to clean up than water leaks
Smoke machine would be even better. Twin Home Experts on TH-cam - they use smoke machines to trace broken sewer pipes for pest control, but there is no reason it couldn't be used to find broken supply pipes too.
I like and enjoy your videos, and look forward to each one regardless of the topic. This means that I also want to see the Q&A videos and it would be sad if only a few of us could see them.
On the tampon dispenser, look and see if there is a number on the lock face, like CAT74, E85 or something like that. In fact, anything there that has a lock like that, see if it has a number and let me know what that number is. I have a huge selection of small-lock keys that I've collected over the years doing datacom and alarm work; so many of these keys are the same.
Look man, some of us want to know if the door knobs are uranium glass or manganese. LOL Thanks Jason, do love seeing more of the old girl, she is such a fun project!
You could hire a handyman by the hour also. It worked well for a building we volunteer to clean up and paint and such. Retired contractors like these kind of jobs often.
That 1917 fireplace is cool, I hope you keep it and restore it to use once again. The same with the first floor one with the marble, if you have to pick and choose which fireplaces to restore those would be at the top of the list. I think those glazed tiles are little knights which is an interesting motif, it makes me wonder if that was a kids bedroom at one point. I'd love to see you pull up some of that carpet with the wood floor underneath, it is so satisfying to get that stuff removed and have beautiful hardwood floors underneath.
I think you are on the right track when thinking about taking out some of the pass through doors from room to room. Change the layouts for the bathrooms would allow you to make some of them on suites. Lots of possibilities. I envy you there but not all of the work that goes with it. Good luck. I look forward to seeing the results.
Oh yes please, gas fixtures on the mantle. On to things I actually know about... _Keep_ That closet garment slide-out. As you read, it is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids was once a rival to Highpoint North Carolina in the furniture industry. That closet slide-out is a blatant part of the original home's provenance. Take note of any other nameplate in the original house. I'll happily poke around up here for more info😉👍
Make sure you check the if the light bulbs work, they could be blown out and won't come on. 2nd floor: make one room a bedroom and an adjoining room into a sitting room for company, with a TV and couch or chairs for them to lounge in. For some bathrooms you may want to keep a small toilet if you are planning on having children one day they will come in handy for potty training. Also you could keep a small tub for your future children to bathe in. The window doors go out onto a 'Juliette' balcony, you should keep those and reinforce the balcony to enjoy outside after waking up in the morning, look up the balcony on Google or even TH-cam. I would like to know what you think of my subscriptions. Keep up the good work in showing us everything you do ❤
Wow! You can really see how those big leaks have dried up. The walls are almost totally dry! Great job on those gutters. You could split that floor into three apartments. The pink bathroom and the first three-four rooms, the green bathroom and the next door one-two rooms, the blue bathroom with the one-two rooms. Then there’s the room with the en-suite. The extra bath could have washers and dryers. You could probably figure it out to make 3-4 one bedroom apartments. Since it’s not over the annex, no worries bothering people working late nights! DON’T OPEN THE TINY DOOR! You should def use the larger of the spaces for your apartment.
You know,.. I don’t care what you’re filming. I have never done a renovation, probably won’t ever do one. It’s all kinda interesting though, mostly because of your commentary. So KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! From BC, 🍁.
Those funny interconnected rooms were suites in the original configuration that had their own sitting room so people have a place that was their own away from things. Office was probably a sitting room and Infirmary and bedroom 3 were probably a guest room or an adult child's room. Bedrooms 1, 2, 6, and 7 probably children's rooms and small sitting/play area at their entry and 4 and 5 was probably the master suite. Maybe with his and hers bedrooms or a bedroom and a dressing room. The two closets for his and hers with the en suite bath. They didn't need a sitting room area as they would be entertaining on the first floor. The back stairs were servant's stairs. They were shut off from the owners. Notice that they were steep and less comfortable to go up. There would have originally been servant's quarters and storage up above the bedroom level.
I giggle every time you flick a switch for a light and make a comment that it doesn’t work…but somewhere in the hood your neighbour’s lights are mysteriously turned on and off😂
The outlets on the mantels are electric - for electric candles with plugs on the bottom. If you do a quick google image search you should see plenty of examples. Only in the fanciest of mansions - which was the house's origins! EDIT - they are still in business - Sillites! Couldn't remember the name. Just type in Sillites and they pop right up. Ha - even Walmart sells them.
10:27 I'd be wary of those door switches that don't have a positive on or off function. If it's nearly on it might arc and cause a fire . I'd remove the bulbs so there's no load on the circuit .
You could turn your favorite room and the murder room into your personal suite: Bedroom, bath/closet, and sitting room/office/library/hiding from other people. And definitely put a few bidets into the second toilet spaces -- they are so worth it.
Hi Yason, I like your videos and the way you do them, your speech is fantastic and I like that you open each door and showing everything. Also I liked that you showed the plan, it is easier to follow the flow of the floor. I heard that you want to get rid of the fountain, you could just keep it, it's cool and it is already there. I enjoyed this video so much, the more I see, the more I love your property. Thank you, I'm waiting for the next one !
This building has lots of potential. Working on the rooftop and gutters was definitely a plus and very necessary. I've seen so many beautiful old buildings literally destroyed because of damaged and leaking roofs. A building could probably withstand a lot of time unoccupied but once moisture takes over it decays very rapidly. There's a family here on TH-cam that bought a schoolhouse in a rural area that used to house some farm animals in the basement area, and they're going to turn half into their home and the other half into rentals. They've done a phenomenal job but have been working on it for three years. What they've done is super impressive. I'd give you the name if you're interested. They've removed a lot of walls and rebricked a lot of walls. They bought Ikea cabinets for kitchen, put them together themselves (married couple with 2 liddles) and so far are doing well. They bought marble or granite slabs from a company that sold the slabs in pieces of various sizes (discontinued pieces), to put on top of kitchen counters and bathroom countertops. They're going to be amazing. Keep up the good work and stay positive. 😊
You should call the local police department and see if you can get the records for any and all calls to the home. Would be interesting to see if a redrum did happen there. Lol
20:51, doorbell transformer, very typically done that way. Looks like the bell, actually a buzzer, is mounted inside the stairwell. I bet there is a doorbell button hiding behind that door. Yes, I tend to comment during a video and post them right away.
If I were you, I'd be very tempted to convert it all into apartments. With all those bathrooms and the crazy closets, I'm sure many would love the place. It just seems very suited for apartments, with the stairwells and how everything is laid out. Apple parking! It really could set you up for life. Just my suggestion. I have seen the video with your thoughts on it all, but it would be far too much space for me.
They do make electric fire place burner wood thingamados 🤔 for the fireplace so definitely use it! Or battery candles in a tier candle holder. Don’t have to worry about fires or electric outlets. You can also get blackout curtains to have privacy in that room with the French doors. This is so very cool Thanks for sharing I am on hold with getting anything done because family is visiting so taking a break 👍 😣😆🤷🏻♀️
I'm down for the whole process of the reno. Yes, I'm excited to see work done on the inside, but I just enjoy your videos regardless. If you ever get to the point of thinking of living on the job site, I would highly recommend picking a room and making it as comfortable and homey as possible. It can be highly stressful sleeping in the same space you're working, but also give motivation on said project, just be careful if you do because you can get burnt out fast too.
Hello Yason I do love those French doors on the second floor. Strange those miniature tubs and toilets in the bathrooms tho. Amazing closets in the bedrooms so much store space. That’s one thing you’ve got plenty of storage. Thanks for the video
Yay, a garden update coming up! 😀 The roofing process will be interesting as well. I’m learning a lot from the way you explain what you do and why you do it like that, e.g. the silicone and mesh in episodes 10 and 11. The floor-by-floor walkthroughs are very enjoyable, thank you for the time and effort that go into your videos. And since you asked what we want to see 🙂: at the start of episode 2 you mentioned the building's 120 (!) windows. Eventually I would love to see how you tackle those whenever their turn rolls around, but no pressure as they are likely not a priority any time soon. Whatever the order of the repairs, looking forward to it all!
Thanks for the Membership! And Yes over 100 windows!! Its going to be a wild ride! I am thinking I should do more energy efficient modern windows. But everyone is frowning upon that. I really have to figure out the heating situation too because its going to get cold in a few months! Thanks again! I got to figure out something special to do for the first members!! Thank you again!
That fire place plaque is latin for ,May I be consumed by in service is the motto for Ridley College (also known as RC, Ridley) is a private boarding and day university-preparatory school located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada,. It is easier to repair the historic window then replace. Nee to remove all the dead bolts and plug the holes and sand and repaint the door.
I like to watch any videos of you working on the house!! I also like the yard work videos!! I vote for doing the roof first!!! Good weather for roofing doesn't last long and the plumbing will be waiting for you inside!!
My house had the gas lamps but didn’t put outlets in. Yay garden work. Pull what you have to pull. Roots can be a disaster. This school house project is so interesting. Thanks for letting me follow your journey.
I highly doubt there were gas lamps especially because of the fire hazard around children. There are privacy curtains specifically made for french doors. The small door close to the floor might be a laundry shoot.
I suspect that the q&a videos are in fact doing pretty well which is why you would move them to a "paid zone", and that's totally fine if that is the case. You have to focus on the finances of course. If I'm wrong and the q&a-videos are performing poorly, I would suggest adding one question at the end of every episode since this wouldn't mess with the algorithm but would be very good for us who love the q&a. Love your channel and I look forward to every new episode. :)
Q and A get about 1/4th the views as regular videos. It doesn't have to be paid, just moved somewhere else I guess. It just seems like a huge hassle to move it onto another platform and try to get people to sign up or move over to that platform if that makes sense. So basically what happens is when a previous video does poorly youtube thinks that the content isnt doing well. So the next video will only be recommended to the people that watched the previous video. So for example if only 100 people watched your last video, only 100 people will get that new video suggested. if a staggeringly high percentage of that 100 watch it, youtube then pushes out that video to 10% more people, so an additional 10 people, IF all 10 of those people watch it it will push it out to another 10% and so on. So basically lets say you have a video that did very well. 100,000 views. and your next video only did 100 views. Even if your third video is a continuation of the first one which people liked. Only 100 people will see it, then it has to crawl all the way back up. In most cases people have forgotten or lost interest about the first video. Hope this makes sense. Any ideas I am open! Thx
Loving the tour videos! It really shows the viewer just how large the house is! I would have such a hard time trying to utilize all the space in purposeful and functional ways.
I am one of those people who loves to takes house tours. Perhaps in your area you can find at least one vctorian mansion to visit. It may give you ideas as what things are, what to keep and what to discard. The caretaker may be happy to give you pointers.
16:45 That molding along the top of the wall is either for electrical or datacom. Or, if there is a divider, it could be both. It looks like Wiremold 4000 series. Oh, I see some coming down the wall at 17:02; it's both.
You can frost the door windows to create some privacy. It's possible they closed in the fireplaces even though they were working. It's worth checking any you want to use. If they were closed & not sealed property on the roof, you may need to address that. There was a time when affluent households had a master suite with adjoining his & her bedrooms. That appears to be what you have. Question...you mention the baby tubs...could any of them be repurposed into shower tubs? Not sure, but it would save you some funds.
I don’t know, I’m interested in learning about the roof and the water pipes too. I think most people follow for the creator, as much as the content 😎 Edit - it would be totally amazing to move that water fountain someplace outside! Of course I’m Gen X and we were used to hoses and water fountains 😅 It looks to me like there’s a good bit of Door/Wall reconfiguration have you done to make the place more appealing as a home versus school
I've been enjoying all the videos for the most part. I mean, sure, I tune out a bit when it starts to get technical, and I dont understand what you're talking about. Lol Obviously, this whole thing is not a fast process, and some people just want to see quick/obvious changes. People will come and go, but as it goes on, you'll acquire a group of viewers that are just here for it all. It's hard to balance deciding what to do on a channel and keep viewership up. Good luck!
Hi Yason, I think you could do 1 or 2 Q&A at the end of each episode. That room you like would make a great master bedroom. and the small room next to it converted to a huge walk-in closet. Women love huge closets. Plus the extra bathrooms could be his and hers. Also small rooms could be converted into small kitchens, Also in some mansions you need living quarters for employees. as well as guest rooms. The options are endless. And yes I enjoy all your videos even the Q&A. Thanks. Please keep 'em coming!
The remains of the person who may or may not have been un-alived are potentially behind the tiny door! xD .. On a more serious note, there is so much potential with this place. As you get on top of the jobs you are going to have the best time working out how to make good use of the spaces. In some areas you may be able to remove walls to open the place out, others can rejig to make use of plumbing, fittings, etc. Awesome!
really enjoying the videos, you're doing a great job. for Q & A you could add certain ones to videos. such as when you do work on the bathroom, answer questions about the bathroom.
Nicely done Jason, another very informative video. If you want to continue with the Q&A videos, consider limiting them to once a month or once every two months, that way you still will do them, just not a frequently as every week. You are still very early in this journey and figuring out what really interests your viewers, and it will all sort itself out along the way. I think we all enjoy every aspect of what you are producing and you have come along way since the first videos. Keep up the great work and look forward to the next instalment. 😊😊
Im just enjoying everything, you are a vey adventurous young man to take on a big adventure like this.. Maybe put a tape on switches that dont work... Just my thoughts
It is a Benedict slogan on the stone. Terar Dum Prosim, Latin, meaning let me wear out/off to be of any use'/as long as I am of any use'. There's a Carlyle candle in the middle. Carlyle was a philosopher. Description of one in sale 'Moravian Pottery, Mercer Tile, Thomas Carlyle Candle "Terar Dum Prosim" meaning "May I be consumed in service", or "I burn while I am of use". The horses and rider are symbolic of this philosopher, perhaps worth a Wiki search? That's a gentlemen's dresser room, the closet was for hanging suits to pull out and choose, the drawers contained crispy ironed and starched shirts, and the other was for socks and shoes, polish drawer below. The other is the lady's closet, more clothing, and in need of a safe for jewelry.
Decide a schedule for answering Q&A - maybe once or twice a month - and do it in a livestream. Use it to respond to the common and/or random questions from your comments, and then allow live chat to ask more. Edit the livestream down into a shorter video - maybe 30 minutes or so - and post afterwards on YT. Make sure you announce the Q&A livestream beforehand on your Community page, and make a brief statement in your regular videos of the day/time so YT-ers who want more engagement will remember. Sharing the streamlined version afterwards keeps engagement alive for those who don't want to participate in a livestream or on a different platform.
Very nice tour, more thorough than the 1st time. Those rooms are nice, would make great bedrooms, tons of closet space. Disappointed that Q & A's won't be available on regular videos. I don't have Instagram, not going to. You could always do an extra video for the Q & A's. They're nice to get to know you, the building and projects better.
A few things, I myself am enjoying the journey so any and all content is welcome, I lived in a bedroom with glass French doors for a few months & I put dark curtains inside the bedroom on the door so that solved the privacy issue. And finally you should keep the dual toilets because who doesn't love dropping a duece with a buddy? 😂
Cool! I love those fireplaces. even if ya keep them for looks only. Those tiles could sell for $100 a piece if ya get the right person bidding. Wonder what's under the paint on the other ones? I like the Q&A but don't have budget for membership.
I have one word for you when it comes to the spots where the extra toilets are: bidet. put in bidets, mah dooooood. you will not regret. LOL
I don't mind roofing and gutters but also understand the difficulty of videoing them. I'm happy with seeing all aspects of your renovation, including any yard stuff. All most enjoyable. BTW, you videoing skills have improved immensely😊.

You are not boring. Your real fans enjoy your Q &A. but we will follow you anywhere :)
Thank you so much I appreciate you so much!
6:00 in case anyone is interested - terar dum prosim is Latin for " may I be consumed in service"

I love the windows that lead to the patio!
I always enjoy your videos! Keep them coming!😊
You should keep at least one of the mini tubs and turn one of the baths into a "Doggie spa" room.😊
There's so much you can keep, the ladder to the third floor is so beautiful, 😊.
The tour episodes are facinating

I just saw the elevator. I'm gonna assume it's not operational. But if you are gonna have your parents live here some day, good to have.

The tiles on the fireplace looks like Batchelder tiles. Ernest Batchelder was a prominent Arts and Crafts designer from the early 1900’s.
What's the blurred part? Is it someone's name?

Have a great week. You are doing great and I'm curious about it all so I'm here for it all. Stay healthy, happy and safe always. 😊
I’m loving this series. Such an interesting project.
There are ways of putting a curtain over doors with glass panels. It's easy.
I love watching it all including q and a

Very nice👍✨️

Yup, like on the episode of friends when light switch in one apartment controlled the plug in the other apartment 😂

I like both the windows and the doors!😊 That's so much money, hope you'll be able to restore them. They're beautiful!!! 😁
You should call the local police department and see if you can get the records for any and all calls to the home. Would be interesting to see if a redrum did happen there. Lol
Oh that's a great idea. Good thinking. 🥰

@@armedscubasteve I never even thought about that. Thank you for that. I'm gonna use that myself. Thanks again . 👏
20:51, doorbell transformer, very typically done that way. Looks like the bell, actually a buzzer, is mounted inside the stairwell. I bet there is a doorbell button hiding behind that door.
Yes, I tend to comment during a video and post them right away.
Like your presentation of the house, enjoy your comments 😊
Thank you! 😃
Great tour. Thanks so much for the floor plan map. It sure helped me understand where we were in the building.
Wow totally could make a luxury duplex without changing much. Mostly closing up extra doorways and walling up the hallway
Always interesting! A big job but you are doing great. Tile work on the fireplace is beautiful. So much potential.
What about a hotel?
Thanks!
Yes, great to get roof and gutters fixed as priority before winter comes!
They do make electric fire place burner wood thingamados 🤔 for the fireplace so definitely use it! Or battery candles in a tier candle holder. Don’t have to worry about fires or electric outlets.
You can also get blackout curtains to have privacy in that room with the French doors.
This is so very cool
Thanks for sharing
I am on hold with getting anything done because family is visiting so taking a break 👍
😣😆🤷🏻♀️
I have a glass door to one of our bedrooms, we but sheer curtains on it. with rods at the top and bottom. Keep privacy yet light comes through.
Thanks for showing us the second floor. It’s funny how much you keep learning about the house.
👍👏
Hello Yason I do love those French doors on the second floor. Strange those miniature tubs and toilets in the bathrooms tho. Amazing closets in the bedrooms so much store space. That’s one thing you’ve got plenty of storage. Thanks for the video
Loving the tours! 🥰
Glass French doors can also have the panels done to look like stain glass for privacy.
I hope you can save and use some of the fireplaces. The one with the brick and tiles was very nice! 👍
Knights on horseback on your beautiful tiles!
I love the walking tours and explanations! Such an interesting place with so much history. Great job as usual!!
Thx
I love seeing all the weird stuff you find
Great tour! Those full glass panel doors could be mounted with beautiful fabric curtains for privacy if needed.
I'm here until I expire or you finish the project. 😂. Does the one tile mean to give service? It's a very cool fireplace.
Loving the tour videos! It really shows the viewer just how large the house is! I would have such a hard time trying to utilize all the space in purposeful and functional ways.
Well I can never lose interest on this journey, it's a blessing😊
I am one of those people who loves to takes house tours. Perhaps in your area you can find at least one vctorian mansion to visit. It may give you ideas as what things are, what to keep and what to discard. The caretaker may be happy to give you pointers.
in Australia we start with the ground floor and the next floor is the 1st floor. I love whatever you put on. regards
Set of 2 Antique Mercer Moravian Pottery Works JOUSTING KNIGHTS 7 1/4" Tile... $499.95
The triple closet is awesome.
❤love the closets😊
At 6:18, that looks like tile from the Mercer Tile Works in Doylestown, Bucks which is still makes tile by hand.
I think most people follow for the creator, as much as the content 😎
Edit - it would be totally amazing to move that water fountain someplace outside! Of course I’m Gen X and we were used to hoses and water fountains 😅
It looks to me like there’s a good bit of Door/Wall reconfiguration have you done to make the place more appealing as a home versus school
I've been enjoying all the videos for the most part. I mean, sure, I tune out a bit when it starts to get technical, and I dont understand what you're talking about. Lol
Obviously, this whole thing is not a fast process, and some people just want to see quick/obvious changes.
The other is the lady's closet, more clothing, and in need of a safe for jewelry.
enjoyed the tour
Great tour is going to be very beautiful
The tiles could be Pewabic tiles. The Pewabic company started in the early 1900's and is still in business today.
I like the variety of the video's and roofing and gutters are the same. Your doing a great job keep on doing you.
That brick is beautiful!!!!
Thanks for the tour, really interesting. 😊
I'm a big fan of "this old house" so I will watch anything. Iv done my share of renovation so it's all interesting to me.
Cool! I love those fireplaces. even if ya keep them for looks only. Those tiles could sell for $100 a piece if ya get the right person bidding. Wonder what's under the paint on the other ones? I like the Q&A but don't have budget for membership.
Could the walls and doors on the stair wells be a fire code thing?
I enjoyed the tour. So many ideas 💡
