US Dam Removal To Allow Salmon to Spawn, The Enloe Dam

  • A BC Conversation group is requesting Washington State to remove a dam near the US/Canada border. The Enloe Dam for nearly 70 years serves no purpose any more since the dam stopped producing hydro power in 1954. Salmon have been unable to come up the Similkameen River into British Columbia for many decades now, it is the time to dismantle it and open the pathway blocking spawning salmon. This would not be the first dam in the area to be torn apart, many unfunctional dams had been totally removed allowing salmon to continue to go up rivers like they have for thousands of years.

    Unbelievable how stupid the state is by not removing the dam.

      There are literally thousands of dams like this in the United States. Many over a century old, long past their usefulness, dangerous and an environmental nightmare. Still they have fans who will go to great lengths to preserve them.

      The answer is having money to pay to remove it. They can't just blow it up. Someone provides the funds and they will remove it.

    The amazing short sightedness to put it in with total disregard to migratory fishs and the amazing short sightedness to leave the dam in place long after it was any use, dear god.

    please remove this dam, and let the salmon come home. Native species habitat must trump politics. 🙏

      Blocked for electricity. Understandable at the time when the hydro electric plant was built, But if something isn't being used for 100 years, yea... It's time to come down... Maryland has been removing unused dams slowly.

    How do fish get above the Coyote Falls downstream??? Coyote Falls is 20-24 feet tall and salmon can only jump 12 feet with a running start. Something doesn't make sense.

      It is very expensive to remove dams. The owners know it is much cheaper to just abandon them.

    With all these dam removals the price of salmon should plummet, or not.

      There is great demand for salmon. Even if supply goes up prices won't come down. We will just gobble up the surplus.

    for those of you who don't live in OK-
    the dam is a very important historic site for us, as it generated power for all the homes for almost 50 years. the architecture of the powerhouse alone is worth saving. Not to mention removal would release 100 years of gold mining sediment (this includes heavy metals) into the water stream.

  • @23ofSeptember
    @23ofSeptember 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Easier said than done. Tons of sediment and toxic sludge built up behind the dam after years of mining upstream. Its probably best to build a fish ladder than total dam removal.

    • @inharmonywithearth9982
      @inharmonywithearth9982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dam removal is being done in USA and Europe. Absolutely no detrimental effects from all the sludge have happened. We were worried about that for a long time. If you build a fish ladder and leave the dam with the sludge the fish would then have to migrate through the still water and the sludge All the removals have been beneficial. Fish ladders do not work because we still have to kill and eviscerate brood fish, hatch eggs and transport above the dams even though they have fish ladders. The migrating fish prefer to go where the water seems to be the main channel not the sides. Also beaver, otter, mink, eels and amphibians wont use the ladders and they would still be trapped below. They need to migrate again too.

    • @glenncordova4027
      @glenncordova4027 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just remove the sludge as well. That way we have more salmon and clean water.

    • @23ofSeptember

      @@glenncordova4027 Is it possible? Trying to dredge it all out at the base of the dam just disturbs it and brings it to the top to flow downstream. Maybe if they can divert the waterflow around the dam first.

    • @glenncordova4027
      @glenncordova4027 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@23ofSeptember Lots of dams come down every year. They dredge the silt and dispose of it.
