    There are two very clear reasons that horror and religion are so intertwined:
    1) Christianity involves the belief in demons and Satan. These are the bad guys in the bible and all bad things can be attributed to them, especially the metaphysical. All the "bad guy" horror/religion movies seem to be Christian based.
    2) Cults have done horrendous things to people in the name of their religion. These tend to be more physical horror (torture and the like) than metaphysical. These movies tend to still be largely Christian based (of one denomination or the other) because there seem to be more Christian based cults, but they also include other types of religion, such as Paganism (Midsommer).

    Would recommend Apostle ( 2018) with Dan Stevens for a good modern take on religion and horror.
