    This year has been quite a challenge. As you mentioned the weather set many of us back 2 to 4 weeks behind in the planting , the rains we had here flooded a lot of our yard and gardens, cicadas are everywhere, the bugs seem to be worse here than most years . I want a green house but I am going to try to build my own using recycled materials.

    My son built a green house from pallet wood and polycarbonate sheets, it took a little longer than would have been if the polycarbonate supplier had been able to supply better, but also my husband who was in a hospital ward for 11 days then contracted COV- 19 whilst there and was fighting for his life, so the build was put to one side somewhat.
    So to all out there that just keep thinking about it, go and get on with it and enjoy life and get something more for your selves whilst you can, as for my husband he is
    sadly not with us any longer and we are finding it very hard trying to adjust to another way of life without him and having the greenhouse has helped a little.
    Just get life and enjoy what you can, when you can, keep safe and be on your guard but also be nicer to each other as there really is too much hate around and
    most people into growing are usually much more caring individuals, like Gardener Scott, who we appreciate sharing his time by making his videos available to us
    thanking you Scott -keep safe.

    For windy areas, those little metal building companies will usually work with you on a frame from them with greenhouse sheets from someone else. The steel tube frame from like an rv shed. I also have a buddy that bought the little 2 car carport steel building, but he put screen door each end and screened everything in, the roof was silver steel. He put his smokers and grills and stuff, picnic table and ceiling fans. It's a pretty cool hang out

    I completely agree with you. I think too many people just want a greenhouse and get one that looks good without thinking all the items you mentioned through. I built mine last year and have enjoyed it immensely but there’s a few things I wish I would have considered first. The heat inside in summer needs to be addressed as well as water and electricity. Great videos

    Hi Gardener Scott… Winnemucca Nevada here✋
    Great info on getting a GH! We have similar climate conditions & zoning.. you get snow, we get ice & icy roads lol.
    My son built mine several yrs ago.. wood, glass, corrugated roof with entrance to my garden. He’s plumbed it & has electricity for me. Our temps have been as high as 118🔥🥵
    & it was a struggle with a swamp cooler & 3fans😵‍💫😵‍💫 but got my seeds going , garden in & just working with the challenge here😉
    Hope your area is safe from the fires. Nevada is literally surrounded by them😩. Smoke so bad couldn’t see neighbors house 1 acres away😳
    Stay safe & always great info

    I really enjoy your videos, from a perspective of someone who is managing their first garden ever, but plans to learn and expand, with a dream of gardening for the rest of their life. This one especially helps us (mostly me 👩🏼‍🌾) because we’re slowly in the process of building our forever home! A greenhouse was a part of my husband’s dream, but thanks to your video, I can certainly agree that I’d give one a try that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Who knows, maybe I can always have back-up tomatoes that aren’t suffering from the diseases that my tomatoes have now. (I also spaced the ones I have very incorrectly and haven’t been able to dedicate the time I should because I have a toddler, a long haul truck driver husband, two dogs, 7 puppies for now….and an entire house to clean. Haha!)

    I'm in suburban yard and could enjoy a green house, but I already have a Sunroom and it get morning and afternoon sun as I am located with my back of the house is where my sunroom is and it facing the south-east as being in a court and lucky with the location .
    Sunroom isn't a green house but it's sunny and full of sun and although not heated in zone 6 Columbus Ohio I've never seen temperature below the fourths and going to try to keep Peppers in this winter,I believe it going to be okay.
    Lots of good advice and information on your video once again.

    I had a wood structured greenhouse covered with 6 mil greenhouse poly. The poly lasted 8 years. The only drawbacks I had was heat build up even though I had three windows and a screened door. Temperatures got very hot during the summer! Also the other drawback was the sun deteriorated certain plastics I had in the greenhouse. The UV rays were very strong and broke down the plastics. My next greenhouse will have circulation fans and roof vents too. We moved thus I have to buy a new greenhouse.

    Good luck with your greenhouse! Definitely don't forget about heating and cooling your greenhouse. I thought I could put off those decisions until after my Harbor Freight 6x8 greenhouse was built but it would have been better to have planned ahead. I wanted to save on electricity so I opted for a geothermal solution. It would have been so much easier to dig the hole for the air pipes before it was built.

      I saw a vid on how someone built those. It was awesome actually. I had a greenhouse in Mich. I sure don’t need one here in FL with the heat. But I have used cattle panel on my raised beds here & made the “Gardner Scott” hoops out of it! And it’s awesome. My shade cloth or whatever I want or need to drape them with. Is very sturdy. I bet your cattle panel greenhouse is awesome. How big is it? I think for the $$$ in comparison to how much its used. Is really a brilliant idea. I was impressed with the video I saw making one.

    Great video for those considering a greenhouse! We built one last year from cattle panels and plastic. It has lower walls of wood and galvanized metal panels. Has a door in front and windows in back. Door and windows were repurposed. Shelving inside is repurposed closet shelving. The purpose behind ours was to expand our growing season. Love our greenhouse! I have no doubt you will lobe yours too. Looking forward to following how yours does. We may just want to add a second one here on our mountaintop in SE Tennessee.

    Zuke not Luke. And I am ready to start broccoli from seed for the fall. and more radish. Some of these veggies hate the hot season so I have to learn when to grow and when not to grow. eg I sowed a cucumber seed in April by mistake, it grew and I picked one large cuke today, but that may be all from that plant. They grow better if sown in August, which I have done with 4 seeds.

    Good! I can’t wait to see your kit built! For your area with the wind. I would say polycarb was a great choice.! You have good advise, AS ALWAYS! I had an 8 x 15 ghouse in Mich . Kinda Gothic shape and it had automatic heat vents in roof. I loved it. A great “learning” curve too. I loved that I was ITCHING to get outside way before I could actually plant outside. Start playing in dirt and start seedlings. And it was a GREAT place to use the containers for dirt I had. Then emptied, to dry out my catnip and things in later. i always grew dipper gourds, would harvest them. Drill some holes in certain spots. Set them on racks. And let them dry in the ghouse all winter. Then in Feb. I’d go retrieve them. Clean them up. Do woodburning on them or make birdhouses. Personally, I loved having one. Here in FL the last thing I need is a greenhouse with the heat. BUT. i am SO HAPPY I watched and used your vids on the “hoops” for raised beds, which I have here in FL. I made the cattle panel ones. And they are AWESOME. The shade cloth stays on them so well. they are SO sturdy. Even when we got some of that tropical storm Elsa that came through, and it POURED HARD & had some wind gusts. With those panels and the cloth was like mini greenhouses. Not one plant was blown out. And some water still get through the cloth. So I’m so happy with those hoops. Am the only one I know growing veggies in this heat ! 👍🤣

    We built an enclosed garden, 12.5'x33.5'. We are looking for a media to make removable panels, so it can be a green house in the spring/fall, and a regular garden in the summer. We're trying to decide between multi layered polycarbonate and solar cover for a pool. It may be another year before we get it finished. Excited to see what you get, how you use it, and how it benefits you. Oh our tomato plants, did recover from the flooding rains. And have been producing about 15 tomatoes a day, for the last week or so!

    We are building a 6x6 glass and wood greenhouse this year. Looking around on market place I found tempered glass for $20 per sheet and red cedar for a $1.00 per board foot. That works out to a $2000 (canadian) savings on material. The total cost to build should be around $800.
    It will add resale value (hoping not to ever sell) to the house, extend the growing season a few weeks, harden plants, and protect some plants over winter/store pots, gardening equipment, etc... It also provides a space free from birds, raccoons, and squirrels.
    I am in Chilliwack BC which is a growing season 8a. But we are at the begining of the mountain range and can have some strange weather patterns although not as bad as Colorado. Last fall we got 220 mil of rain in 24 hours.
    Thank you for your channel....

    Those harbor freight versions went way up in price to. My 6x8 is still holding up. The panels might last a few years more with these hot temperatures baking everything. I put the length of mine north and south. Realistically if I don't have a way to provide some heat at times in the early spring plants will freeze. Then the other extreme of plants getting fried because the auto vents may not be enough to promote adequate air flow. Then there is the chance the autovents don't close soon enough and you loose heat before a colder night, or the heater turns on with the vents still open. If you only have manual vents then you will be on your toes alot. I don't regret getting mine although I only use it for maybe 1 month in the spring.

I start some seeds (peppers/tomatoes) in my garage in January under lights on seed heat mats and by April they go out in the garden. Thank goodness for our weather. Most other seeds do not need heat mats. I am picking cucumber, zucchini and squash right now and picking at least 4 dozen cherry tomatoes every day. I have cuke more Luke and more squash seeds growing in the planters for the cooler season (Sept/Oct) as I type.Thanks for sharing your info.

    Ventilation is very important as well. Going to have solar power and use a raspberry pi to regulate the ventilation and temps inside the greenhouse. I decided using a car port frame without a roof. Structure the sides at waist high with stones that absorb heat very well. Like soapstones, to keep heat on cold nights a little longer. Will have a small wood stove or some kind of heated water system to boost the heat in the cold nights, plus through winter months. I was going for the double barrel of plastic with air blow between. But might switch that to Polycarbonate panels. I do harvest rain water and it will be close to the greenhouse. Won't be doing it this year, funds are just not there yet. Hoping by next year get this project started.

    I live in a hurricane area so i want to build a bull strong greenhouse. I would love to hear your ideas on my plan prior to me building it this fall( when it's cool enough to be outside during daylight hours). I want to build a typical house shaped building with wooden ends that are covered in polycarbonate panels and 6mill plastic wraparound sides with rollup sides. The north side will be wood covered 1/2 way up with a screened 3 ft bottom. I live in 8b/9a coastal Alabama. With wooden 1×4 or 6 run top center and bottom of roof to be able to screw the poly down and a 2×4 running down each side top mid and around the entire bottom to staple plastic to or wiggle wire if i can afford to use. I will cement the bottom of the north and south walls to build built in planters down the east and west walls. I would like to make it at least 16ft × 20ft possibly up to 25 ft. It's an odd size so I'm going to have to build it myself( well have it built

    Thanks for the thoughtful considerations to make about a greenhouse. I’m looking at evolving my current standalone design to something more sturdy like the kit design you’ve selected per your other videos. Now that you’ve had it up and put it to use per what I’ve seen in the other videos, can you share the source? Plus, living in Colorado just south of you, will the polycarbonate hold up to the large hail?

    Really appreciate the timing of this video. My wife and I want one and your insights are going to be so helpful. I really look forward to seeing your las you build it. Your video brought up one question as both my wife and I are just new this year to gardening. Can seedlings not be started in a greenhouse? Again, thanks Gardener Scott.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. It depends on the seedlings and time of year, but they can often be started in a greenhouse. The unheated dome greenhouse I grew in would drop to the 20s F inside in February and early March. That is too cold to start seeds. But it would stay above freezing soon after and we could start some plants while it was too cold outside.

    • @janwilliams4282
      @janwilliams4282 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GardenerScott I appreciate the reply. I am going to make a request that I hope isn’t considered too much. When you get your kit and build your greenhouse can you add into the content the best way to utilize them? The reason I’m asking is because I - as well as others I believe - thought the reason for a greenhouse was to take the seedling growing outdoors and being able to use actual sunlight instead of grow lights. So if you could just give some tips about the best way to utilize one it would be helpful to many of us. Thanks Gardener Scott for all you do to help us beginners.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am planning videos like that. A common misconception is that actual sunlight is better. In winter months there isn't enough natural light to support plant growth even if they're warm enough.

      It's similar but also not really. He has far hotter summers and far colder winters. We can grow cool weather crops earlier and later but cannot grow summer veg like tomatoes as well. Also obviously we get about 100x the rain.

    My tip for harvesting tomatoes is to paint your nails the exact color of a perfect tomato, so you can compare each one to the color on your fingers, and never again pick an underdone tomato. Soon you can recognize gardeners by their tomato orange fingernails, it's a challenge so pass it on~

    Hello Mr. Scott! Thanks for your videos. I'm starting now and I'd like to grow only hot peppers. I live in Belgium where winters are cold. Should I use a greenhouse? Thanks!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, Linda. Much depends on the variety of pepper and how long your growing season is. I have difficulty growing sweet peppers outside and a greenhouse does better for me. But my hot dry summer is ideal for many hot peppers and they do well for me outside. I harvest before the frost comes and kills the plants. If you need a longer season, a greenhouse may be better for you.

    My question is, which is the best direction in which to orientate a greenhouse? I've read to place a greenhouse running from north to south so you can get the best sun during the day from east to west. Would this be correct? But overall a very informative greenhouse video for beginners. Thank you

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true during the summer, but as I mention in the video, you'll get more sun with east-west orientation during the spring and fall months.

    Great Video Scott. Me and my family here in zone 6 New Hampshire have been strongly considering putting a green house up this fall so this is great timing. My biggest concern is the heating of it in the cold..and whether or not I would be able to actually grow anything with how weak the sun gets during the winter months. Do you expect to be able grow tomatoes,for instance, through the winter months?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your concerns are valid. Without extra lighting the plants grow too slowly in winter. I have tried spinach, beets, chard, and carrots over winter and there is almost no noticeable growth with the limited sun. I'm not planning to grow much during those months.

    May I please make some more considerations for prospective greenhouse buyers? 1. Why do you want a greenhouse? Some people will grow things in greenhouses that do not grow well in their climate, cacti or orchids where they don't grow naturally. 2. Is there enough ventilation in the greenhouse? The difference between a greenhouse and a hothouse is how well it's ventilated. 3. You get what you pay for. I have a cheap one that I use only for storage. 4.How will you water inside your greenhouse? You mention this but they fog up fast. 5. Don't trust the pictures.

    A man 50 miles south of me built a greenhouse with 12 mil plastic. It stood up to 120 mph gusts. We don't get much hail here and just a little bit of snow. I have heard that polycarbonate windows have to be replaced as often as every 4 years so sunlight can still get through.
    Does anyone have experience with 12 mil plastic vs 6, 8 and 10 mil which are commercially available. I want to build climate battery greenhouses. Still in planning stages.

  • @JonTopping
    @JonTopping 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in a similar situation to you, where I'm in Canada, so the growing season is short. I'm thinking about doubling up on the greenhouse plastic. Would this be good or bad? I would absolutely love to be able to have peppers all year round staying alive in the greenhouse. Would putting two layers of the plastic help? Or will that cause problems?

    • @GardenerScott

      Doubling the plastic should add a few extra degrees of protection. It may not be enough to grow peppers year-round without additional heat.
