Man, I remember when I first bought and listened to Operation Stackola back in ‘95 and how it blew me away. I’m born and bred in the Netherlands and Bay Area music and culture was so alien to me as we had very little exposure to it. For literally years I looked for interviews with Dru Down, Luniz, Richie Rich but there was absolutely nothing I could get my hands on. So you can imagine what a gem this interview is to me, even decades later. To me, C&H was only a dude who had a cameo in the I Got 5 On It video and occasionally talked on some of the songs (though I knew he was the producer). But hearing all his stories made me realize how much of an OG he is. I can’t thank you enough for uploading this.. seriously.
Man - I just found this - what a true and genuine gift to the fans of Oakland rap to give us this interview. Thank you. I've liked and subscribed without having to be begged.
I grew up in the 5....Vicksburg & Bancroft Ave apts. It was hella funny when I found out Droopy rapped. I came home from Navy bootcamp in December '93 to visit the fam before I reported to my first duty station down in San Diego. Me and one of my patnas hopped on BART to go to Berkeley to do some record shopping. I was in fuckin Tower Records looking at some rap tapes. I kept hearing about this dude named Dru Down, so I picked up the tape and looked at the cover... "Is this fuckin Droopy from the 500!?!?! Hell naw!! Droopy with the Shirley locks?? Rob and Jason's folks?? Oh shit!! Droopy fucking with C&H like that?? He used to hoop with us at Horace Mann Elementary all the time!" 😆 That shit caught me by surprise because I had no idea he rapped. Never heard him rhyme until I bought that Fools From The Streets tape. Became a certified East Oakland rap legend. Rest in Power to my old school HMV folks Rob Brown too!
I grew up on Congress….me, Danyel, and all the HMV’S spent our days on the schoolyard playin’ basketball & ridin’ our bikes. I was shocked too when Danyel started rappin’, but I can tell you we were listening to The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five back in the early 80’s…It’s always been in the blood😎
Damn rite I was living in the bay at the time I used to bump in to C&H all the time working at FoodMaxx in Hayward and into Dru down everywhere I remember the concert on 96th and sunny side was a classic
I knew C&H back around the early 2000s. He was always a super solid and genuine guy. Every time I would bump into him he always had a smile on his face and positive energy. Haven't seen him in many years but it's always cool running in to him...pause.
