The state-of-the-art Emergency Department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital spans 40,000 square feet and has nearly 80 exam rooms. Nationwide Children’s was Ohio’s first Level One Pediatric Trauma Center. It’s the second busiest pediatric Emergency Department in the country - with nearly 900 transports and an average of 23 air transports each month. Our Emergency team can handle all acute and critical care needs for pediatric patients. To expand our services for critically ill children, we have a fully dedicated medical helicopter. Monarch One features state-of-the-art critical care equipment. This includes technology allowing it to fly in low visibility and a combination of high frequency ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide for patients in need of respiratory care. It’s the only transport helicopter in Ohio that offers this kind of respiratory care for neonatal patients, because we know every second counts. Among the many distinguishing design features of our ED, you’ll find a 14-hundred gallon aquarium complete with 100 colorful fish- in the waiting room.
