I am a missionary serving in Liberia. I’m in the process of developing a pastor training center and permaculture model farm. In the near future, I want to add pasture/forest pigs to our livestock mix. This video was helpful in preparing me when I go to select our first weaned piglets. Thanks!
Time of year when it is hot August Early September here in the south you may need to stop and use a garden hose to wet them down especially if the Temps are in the upper 80's low 90's Most pigs even in a trailer will lay down in a pile while moving and when you get them home give them some wet feed wheat middlings well soaked in water they'll digest it better and it'll help keep them hydrated..
I'm glad to find this video. :) I got a 5 year old girl a month or so ago. She is a Duroc/landrace cross. My friend and I just started ai on her today. Our plan is to chose the 2 best girls, then breed her again. And pick the 2 best from that litter. Then pick the best 2 of those 4 to keep.
It's best to have a quarantine pen area to keep new batch of pigs if you already have some on hand already...10 days to 2 weeks should be sufficient amount of time to quarantine .
Thanks for the info! We’re struggling trying to find decent priced piglets. Most of the ones we see listed are ‘show pigs’ and they want a minimum of $250 each.
I just want two pigs to send to freezer camp but I want to try to have a big enough place so it's not such a mess how big a place do u recommend I know its not gonna be clean but don't want them standing in mud up to thear necks thank you
Thanks. I see so many folks getting into pigs, chickens, etc with little to no experience. Really want people to be successful and have a good experience with their farms.
@@SheratonParkFarms ...your pigs are such good examples of healthy pigs. And such a nice clean and healthy set up. We dont have pigs here but take advantage of our Amish. neighbors pig operation. He has Large Black x Berkshire.
I’ve enjoyed you videos. I learn new things as I watch each one. I hope to start raising pigs in the future. I love the Berkshire breed and that is what I want to raise. Your pigs all look great. I love how honest you are and not afraid to tell us when you make a mistake. Wish thing would have worked out better with Helen . Is there any way to know about the birth canal issues before they are bred . I had the same issue a few years ago with a Hampshire that not fun at all. We ended up just eating her after recovery from. a C section. Any thoughts are helpful
Thanks for the feedback. Not sure there is a way to tell for sure if they will have difficulty birthing or not. Hate that she didn't work out. She was such a sweet pig. appreciate ya'll watching.
He uses a much smaller pin to "train" them to electric fence. Normally a week or so later you can move them to a two strand polybraid pasture fence. Unfortunately there is no x number of pigs per acre. It really just depends on your property. Start small and work into it.
Why do you leave all of the stripped branches in the paddock? Just a question of why don't you spread them so they break down faster or they can use the shreaded wood for beding
You mentioned that one should not buy anything older than 14 weeks; why? I have a line on duroc/berk that are 125 lbs, is that too old in your opinion?
I've hauled them in my Acura SUV in a dog kennel
My dad usally castrated at 6 weeks just prior too weaning
When I started back in 89 bought 3 sows and rented the boar for the pick of the litter
That's a good way to get started and know the quality of your pigs.
@Hilma Gegenheimer I know your girlfriend. She gives everyone her password.

It will be highly appreciated if you would kindly detail how to select healthy piglets ie free from sickness or sores from open market?
We use milk crates zip tied together to transport piglets works great if you don’t have anything eles
great video! I've focused my channel on plants and greenhouses but it's very important to get good info on livestock ad you did a great job here!
Thanks. Appreciate the comment!
I’ll be sure to check you out. We do quite a bit of gardening and always looking for tips.

Will hogs eat and control a pasture containing (yellownutsedge) grass?
This information is great. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you...this was a very good tutorial. It should be a great help to beginning pig owners.

Great video. We are looking at pigs. How big are your paddocks?

After that I bought a boar had 2 litters of 18 and one had 17
They multiply fast!

If you are going to have to castrate, 14 weeks is about the max you can do it yourself. No, that wouldn't be too old at all.
I'd go with Red duroc and Poland chinas
Do you find better fat quality on the female ?
If you live in the desert and don't have any grass growing is it still possible to raise pigs with land that isn't growing grass
I'm assuming this seed e r all males right.
No. We have a mix of females and males.
Years ago livestock auctions were a good place to buy sick animals
