Great video. I'm new to gaming and bought Black Sonata, Ragemore, Under Falling Skies and recently Coffee Roaster based on your reviews. Ragemore is my favorite despite losing 50% of the time, its makes you think steps ahead while trying to stave off defeat. Black Sonata is great too, I love its deduction aspect. Thanks !

Great list. It's nice to see lots of small box games featured. I only own one game on your list, Falling Skies. I agree with your observations about dice mitigation. There are numerous ways to make the dice work in your favour, and that's the challenge for the player.

I love your reviews Ti and already bought Orchard, Lux Aturnal and Capital Lux both old and new based on your reviews of them. I always loved a good solo game when you're on your own challenging the game itself. Just got Coffee roaster which I'm enjoying, and added Under falling skies to my list. Rove looks awesomely cool as well. Thanks for these videos that introduce us to even more great games out there.

Love this list! I actually own and stand by #9, #8, #7, and #6 #9: Even if someone memorizes the pattern, that's still only half the puzzle, as the other half is deducting WHO the Dark Lady is, which is a challenge in itself. #8: I own the Saashi & Saashi version with original art, and treasure it GREATLY. I enjoy the bag-building and always imagine my hands as "hand roasting" each bean to its fullest potential. It's a bean-(deck-)optimizing game of knowing when to stop so when you DO brew your coffee, the ratio is just-right to pour the perfect cup, and it's WONDERFUL! #7: I always think of the dice placement like 1-player chess: Each die does a cause-and-effect between your moves and the AI's literal moves. Every choice is a mitigation, so I, too, don't believe it's luck-based. I've had some REAL close calls more often in there than in many other games I've soloed, and it's more thrilling when it's during the campaign! #6: Rove beats Sprawlopolis as my favorite solo ButtonShy game. Fun fact: the mission patterns match the rover's picture format! I also LOVE how the mission artworks create a panoramic picture as you progress in the game. Such a brain-buster! I'm loving your view of solo games and this list, and, as many others here have mentioned, it's a refreshing take amidst the common ones out there!

@@tabletoptokki I don't think I've see any other game quite like The Castles of Burgundy: The Card Game in terms of solo gameplay. In that set-collection game, you play against an AI in 5 rounds. The kicker here is that...there's no high score to beat; you just need to tie/beat the AI EVERY round, up until the end. The moment you DON'T, you LOSE! I wish more solo modes did this rather than high points. Every round promotes potential strategy changes. Say I was aiming to play the long game of collecting multiple sets, then suddenly the AI jumps ahead, say, 10 pts. Now I have to change my plans suddenly and squeeze 10 points before round end to just stay in the game. I love it!
Thank you for making these videos! I am taking a game design class and our goal by the end is to pitch one of our own. So hearing about all the possible games out there, the various mechanics, and ways to play is amazingly helpful. I love these top 10 lists and the solo series you've done. Great video Tia! Glad to see The Brambles made the cut. I'm still waiting to receive my copy. Last I checked it was 500 and something in the queue. I had the same initial experience as you. Had ordered it but then reconsidered and canceled it because the price seemed way too high for what it was. Then I re-reconsidered and re-ordered. Looking forward to getting it next month.
Agree with the other posters that I like your lists as they are very different to others. You have a love for smaller box games that others don't talk about as much. They are not quite my top games either but I enjoy several of the Button Shy Games. As a matter of interest, do you start with 5, 4 or 3 cards in ROVE? I am playing with a friends copy and seem to do alright so far - admittedly I was an urban planner and seem to have good spatial awareness (yet to try 3 cards though). My favourite Button Shy game is Spaceshipped and I hope to get a commercial copy with expansions in the next kickstarter rather than my PNP version. I know that Spaceshipped is a bit on rails at times, but for some reason I find the quick market calculations and shifting/flipping mechanic quite meditative. And kudos for the mention of Maiden in the Forest.
For ROVE I use the standard 5 cards, but maybe I'll get a little spicy and try 4 next time! 🤭 I am desperate for the SpaceShipped expansions but as of now… currently OOS. 😅
Coffee Roaster is your biggest box concerning your top10 solo games?! I think I dont even have a game in my top10 with such a SMALL box. :-) Well, I might be cheating by considering all my Arkham Horror LCG boxes to be one big box. ;-)
Pretty solid list top to bottom. Let’s see. I bought Lux Aeterna based on your play through and thoroughly enjoy it. Black Sonata is currently on my wishlist. Based on this video I feel like I’ll be kicking the tires on both The Brambles and Ragemore; at least researching them a little more. Sidenote. Got my first Ten Hundred tee. Went with a cheery theme called “Quarantine”. Cool art indeed.

I went to check out if I could purchase Rove and then again for Ragemore as button shy games are pretty wallet friendly to purchase... and both are sold out! There are lots of games on this list I have not heard of before but they are all looking really great. I'm wondering if you have ever tried Lucidity: Six sided nightmare? It's right now one of my top favourite solo games and I much prefer to play it solo then with others though have only tried it once with 1 other player... I guess it's a push your luck in some ways, or I always end up pushing my luck. I am newly introduced to your channel through a post in a gaming group with this video and have been wanting to find people that create content about solo games so your channel is right up my alley of things I was looking for! Black Sonata of course👍 and other games you actually like 😇 😝 . But joking aside, I love pocket games, so I will give Ragemore a try. Have you tried Sprawlopolis? I'd hesitate to call it a pocket game, but it's really well done for such a small package. Falling Skies, simple design but so much planning out to do. 👍.
Yes! I quite enjoy Sprawlopolis! I think for me, it is one of the most solid deisgns for tile-laying microgames, but the theme is admittedly less appealing than others. 😊
I am just now dipping my toes in solo games, since playing with others is difficult, to say the least. You won’t find these on BGG (they’re considered puzzles/toys, I guess), but I have now purchased & played 2 entries by Smart Games, and they’re both amazingly fun! I highly recommend Escape from Atlantis & JumpIN’ as great spatial puzzle games!
My favorite solo game most recently was Bullet Heart. Kind of shocked me, but I found the solo mode just as good, if not better, than any of the multiplayer options. It almost makes me think it was actually designed as a solo game first.
@@tabletoptokki I enjoyed the coop mode. Wasn’t as keen on the real time mode. But my main issue was that I liked it almost just as much with friends as I did solo, not a bad thing, but when I get so so little game time with friends in, I just have a hard time wanting to play a game that I love solo with friends because *gestures to shelf with too many games*
I can really recommend Hadrian's Wall and Imperium: Classics. Wouldn't wanna play them with other people, they work so well solo. Not the easiest games and the rules of Imperium are a bit of a mess but both games are really rewarding.
@@mrsteaknshake I'd suggest one of the easy ones like the romans. There seems to be a strategy guide on Nigel Buckles (?) blog where he explains the right strategy for each faction.
“Coffee Roaster” is thinky bag builder fun. Last week, I ordered “”Lux Aeterna” and hope to order “Grove” soon enough. Do you know if “Grove” will be sold “ retail”? I enjoy “Orchard”, already, and appreciate the pack of cards size box for convenient storage.
Lots of new games here for me to consider. Love it! I highly recommend Arkham Noir: Case 3 Infinite Gulfs of Darkness. Just came out and I can't stop playing it. I have the first 2 cases and they're pretty fun, but I wouldn't really recommend them. Case 3, however, is a masterpiece.
@@Boardgamegyrl I think the biggest thing is the new "hardboiled" mode in which you win by completing objectives instead of just the normal 5 cases. ^^
@@Boardgamegyrl Many things 1.) Completed cases unlocks specific items or other cases, creating branching story lines. 2.) You now have a briefcase that lets you move specific items to and from your hand anytime 3.) Menace deck adds a lot of variability to plays by adding random events, some good, some bad, some important to the specific story threads. 4.) Darkness items on some of the clue cards can increase the difficulty but there's usually a way to remove that effect. 5.) Clues are tied to specific narrative threads. To unlock a small narrative text you need to complete specific cases with matching clues in them 6.)Tillinghast's machine unlocks specific items that can't be used otherwise on clue cards Overall the versatility that comes from which cases you close first completely change the tone of the game. Do you unlock Tillinghast's machine 1st, or do you complete case 1 which branches into 2 new cases? or do you unlock special case thru menace cards? Then those new cases have so many juicy decisions, it's just wondering what Tves did with this system!
I love Under Falling Skies even as I've never managed to win haha. Kicks me in the teeth over and over, but I still enjoy the experience and know it's mostly bad choices on my end combined with unlucky rolls.
@@tabletoptokki I should probably play on a lower difficulty setting, haha. That and reading up on good strategies would probably help me wrap my head around it better. I've had games where just one more turn would've been enough to win. It reminds me a lot of a video game called XCOM, very similar focus on being pulled in several directions with several fires to put out and several priorities, and just having to go with your gut and forego doing one thing in order to do another. It's a fabulous board game, I just don't know that I have the mathy strategic brain for being good at it haha.
X-com is brutal. One of the few video games I played where even the easy mode is hard lol. Like good grief. It actually opened me up to enjoying tactical games more, though I think my enjoyment of it is still mostly X-com. Tried a bunch of others and they just don’t seem to do it for me as much, but glad I tried! Never got a chance to play the board game sadly, seems like it mostly wouldn’t work with my friends.
Just to let you know Eiyo does not seem to be available any longer in the US. BBG used copies are from 40 Euro (Croatia) to $100-$185 from the US. Or for $17 from publisher from England ($10 game + $7 shipping). It might take a while to get here but that's OK.
No Capital Lux 2? 😲😲 As you know, Lux Aeterna is my favourite game, and you have to accept some of the blame/credit for that. 😉 As ROVE is on your list, I assume you are backing the expansions on KS? Only a few days left....
I’m getting to the weird point where if I find another solo game I love, I will officially not be able to do a top 10, it will have to be a top 15 or 20. Not a single game is a game I’d be willing to remove from my ‘top’ list.

Surprised about Ragemore. I just. Couldn’t “get it”. I played a few times and I’ve never encountered a game I just felt like I was missing something vital that I didn’t know. Maybe I should give it another shot. But I played it a good bit and just never ‘got it’ (unlike say, Friday)
Ah, there's definitely a bit of a learning curve there! I shared some tips in my playthrough video (without being too obvious ofc) that may help if you ever want to give it another go! 🤗

I have been wanting to try canopy coz it looks very pretty. But does the mechanism of giving cards to next player seems abit broken? As in over advantage to next player. There is another game , mint condition comics use this mechanism. I felt it is disadvantage to the first player as they end up getting lesser cards than other players
Great question! In Canopy it is very well balanced, as more cards does not necessarily mean more points based on how trees, wildlife, and plants score. The solo mode also has slightly modified scoring for wildlife cards to balance out the drafting/ programmed solo opponent, which makes it very well balanced imo! :)
Got rid of lux auterna and black sonata hated them 😊 The rest are cool I really was numbed that ragemore does not have more expansions I hate so much games that are one time play unfortunately most of the list is like that (rove, grove also...) Canopy again is beat the automa for points right?
@@KelvinEP24 I don't have much time for builds these days, but since Grove is on this list-- it's pretty high up there for me. 😉 The Maiden in the Forest is another easy build with great gameplay & low ink but a great overall aesthetic.

You should give Eck a try. It's from the same designer as Brambles. It's a solo trick-tacking game. It's amazing.

Great video Tia! Glad to see The Brambles made the cut. I'm still waiting to receive my copy. Last I checked it was 500 and something in the queue. I had the same initial experience as you. Had ordered it but then reconsidered and canceled it because the price seemed way too high for what it was. Then I re-reconsidered and re-ordered. Looking forward to getting it next month.

Agree with the other posters that I like your lists as they are very different to others. You have a love for smaller box games that others don't talk about as much. They are not quite my top games either but I enjoy several of the Button Shy Games. As a matter of interest, do you start with 5, 4 or 3 cards in ROVE? I am playing with a friends copy and seem to do alright so far - admittedly I was an urban planner and seem to have good spatial awareness (yet to try 3 cards though).
My favourite Button Shy game is Spaceshipped and I hope to get a commercial copy with expansions in the next kickstarter rather than my PNP version. I know that Spaceshipped is a bit on rails at times, but for some reason I find the quick market calculations and shifting/flipping mechanic quite meditative. And kudos for the mention of Maiden in the Forest.
For ROVE I use the standard 5 cards, but maybe I'll get a little spicy and try 4 next time! 🤭
I am desperate for the SpaceShipped expansions but as of now… currently OOS. 😅

I went to check out if I could purchase Rove and then again for Ragemore as button shy games are pretty wallet friendly to purchase... and both are sold out! There are lots of games on this list I have not heard of before but they are all looking really great.
I'm wondering if you have ever tried Lucidity: Six sided nightmare? It's right now one of my top favourite solo games and I much prefer to play it solo then with others though have only tried it once with 1 other player... I guess it's a push your luck in some ways, or I always end up pushing my luck.

I'd hesitate to call it a pocket game, but it's really well done for such a small package. Falling Skies, simple design but so much planning out to do. 👍.
Yes! I quite enjoy Sprawlopolis! I think for me, it is one of the most solid deisgns for tile-laying microgames, but the theme is admittedly less appealing than others. 😊

I am just now dipping my toes in solo games, since playing with others is difficult, to say the least.
You won’t find these on BGG (they’re considered puzzles/toys, I guess), but I have now purchased & played 2 entries by Smart Games, and they’re both amazingly fun! I highly recommend Escape from Atlantis & JumpIN’ as great spatial puzzle games!

My favorite solo game most recently was Bullet Heart. Kind of shocked me, but I found the solo mode just as good, if not better, than any of the multiplayer options. It almost makes me think it was actually designed as a solo game first.
I do love the patterns for Bullet ❤️! I've only gotten to play it once solo, but it's been quite fun multiplayer as well. 😊
@@tabletoptokki I enjoyed the coop mode. Wasn’t as keen on the real time mode. But my main issue was that I liked it almost just as much with friends as I did solo, not a bad thing, but when I get so so little game time with friends in, I just have a hard time wanting to play a game that I love solo with friends because *gestures to shelf with too many games*
Ragemore is great! I was thinking it would be Set a Watch. I'll have to check out Canopy and Lux Aeterna. Those look great.

I can really recommend Hadrian's Wall and Imperium: Classics. Wouldn't wanna play them with other people, they work so well solo. Not the easiest games and the rules of Imperium are a bit of a mess but both games are really rewarding.
Hadrian's Wall is great, if I can keep my components/ combos straight. 😅

@@mrsteaknshake I'd suggest one of the easy ones like the romans. There seems to be a strategy guide on Nigel Buckles (?) blog where he explains the right strategy for each faction.

I highly recommend Arkham Noir: Case 3 Infinite Gulfs of Darkness. Just came out and I can't stop playing it. I have the first 2 cases and they're pretty fun, but I wouldn't really recommend them. Case 3, however, is a masterpiece.

@@Boardgamegyrl I think the biggest thing is the new "hardboiled" mode in which you win by completing objectives instead of just the normal 5 cases. ^^

1.) Completed cases unlocks specific items or other cases, creating branching story lines.
2.) You now have a briefcase that lets you move specific items to and from your hand anytime
3.) Menace deck adds a lot of variability to plays by adding random events, some good, some bad, some important to the specific story threads.
4.) Darkness items on some of the clue cards can increase the difficulty but there's usually a way to remove that effect.
5.) Clues are tied to specific narrative threads. To unlock a small narrative text you need to complete specific cases with matching clues in them
6.)Tillinghast's machine unlocks specific items that can't be used otherwise on clue cards
Overall the versatility that comes from which cases you close first completely change the tone of the game. Do you unlock Tillinghast's machine 1st, or do you complete case 1 which branches into 2 new cases? or do you unlock special case thru menace cards? Then those new cases have so many juicy decisions, it's just wondering what Tves did with this system!

I love Under Falling Skies even as I've never managed to win haha. Kicks me in the teeth over and over, but I still enjoy the experience and know it's mostly bad choices on my end combined with unlucky rolls.

@@tabletoptokki I should probably play on a lower difficulty setting, haha. That and reading up on good strategies would probably help me wrap my head around it better. I've had games where just one more turn would've been enough to win. It reminds me a lot of a video game called XCOM, very similar focus on being pulled in several directions with several fires to put out and several priorities, and just having to go with your gut and forego doing one thing in order to do another.
It's a fabulous board game, I just don't know that I have the mathy strategic brain for being good at it haha.

X-com is brutal. One of the few video games I played where even the easy mode is hard lol. Like good grief. It actually opened me up to enjoying tactical games more, though I think my enjoyment of it is still mostly X-com. Tried a bunch of others and they just don’t seem to do it for me as much, but glad I tried! Never got a chance to play the board game sadly, seems like it mostly wouldn’t work with my friends.

Just to let you know Eiyo does not seem to be available any longer in the US. BBG used copies are from 40 Euro (Croatia) to $100-$185 from the US. Or for $17 from publisher from England ($10 game + $7 shipping). It might take a while to get here but that's OK.

I’m getting to the weird point where if I find another solo game I love, I will officially not be able to do a top 10, it will have to be a top 15 or 20. Not a single game is a game I’d be willing to remove from my ‘top’ list.
It's def hard to choose for any "Top 10" category. Even just ranking them; some games just feel like apples and oranges… so tough! 😅

Surprised about Ragemore. I just. Couldn’t “get it”. I played a few times and I’ve never encountered a game I just felt like I was missing something vital that I didn’t know. Maybe I should give it another shot. But I played it a good bit and just never ‘got it’ (unlike say, Friday)
Ah, there's definitely a bit of a learning curve there! I shared some tips in my playthrough video (without being too obvious ofc) that may help if you ever want to give it another go! 🤗

I have been wanting to try canopy coz it looks very pretty. But does the mechanism of giving cards to next player seems abit broken? As in over advantage to next player. There is another game , mint condition comics use this mechanism. I felt it is disadvantage to the first player as they end up getting lesser cards than other players
Great question! In Canopy it is very well balanced, as more cards does not necessarily mean more points based on how trees, wildlife, and plants score. The solo mode also has slightly modified scoring for wildlife cards to balance out the drafting/ programmed solo opponent, which makes it very well balanced imo! :)

The Maiden in the Forest is another easy build with great gameplay & low ink but a great overall aesthetic.
