  • Here's the sports segment from NewsCenter 5 at 6pm on WMAQ Channel 5 featuring Mike Leiderman reporting. The top story of the day was Jimmy Piersall, White Sox broadcaster, going a bit nuts and attacking a sportswriter (Bob Gallas of the Arlington Heights Daily Herald) before getting into a fight with Mike Veeck. Includes a Jim Ruddle introduction at the beginning and Harry Caray giving his take on the incident. Also:
Ross Baumgarten (any relation to Robin?) talks with Mike about his great pitching performance last night.
    Highlights of Wimbledon
    Highlights of the Sting game
    Report on the Western Open
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, July 3rd 1980.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. I saw Piersall play center field at Fenway Park in person. If one needs to be emotionally confused to play like that, I would recommend every center fielder work toward that state of affairs. Piersall performed miracles in center running full speed with his back to home plate and catching the fly ball at the last possible instant over his left shoulder.
In terms of Piersall’s later assault on a sports writer, what Piersall was reacting to was the writer’s habit of encouraging gossip about a person behind Piersall’s back.
Piersall had been subject to such gossip well out of proportion to other players. Hands around the writer’s throat represents what most of us want to do to those who whisper about us, when they are too cowardly to address the issues to our face.

In 1979, during a game the White Sox were playing at Comiskey Park the cameraman was panning the crowd when he zoomed in on a couple of foxy women. Sitting next to them was a guy who was, well, substandard. Harry Carey was quick to comment on the women, but then Piersall said "Look at the guy who's sitting next to them!", to which Carey responded "WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT THE GUY FOR JIMMY??"

That reporter is actually pretty cool. Today’s reporters would have milked it and sued him for a billion dollars while starting their own tv show and fake charity foundation.

He eventually sued the White Sox & Piersall for $90,000.

@@jonnydanger7181 I'm not sure- after watching the video, I researched it (he brought the suit in '81) but I couldn't find anything about the outcome.

One of those moments that the people involved were lucky to have been in before the advent of social media. Today, the guys that were attacked would be getting all kinds of threats and hate.

Too bad this wasn't Channel 7. Could have heard Big Al Lerner discussing "Der Schting" and their 3-2 loss.

I remember that 1 to 0 game. I think the run was unearned. Frank Tanana was the losing pitcher in a duo with Ross Baumgarten.

Thanks for posting this! I've read two of Piersall's books and, as this video proves, he was a loudmouth troublemaker at times...but an entertaining one. :p Definitely a parallel right now with the mess Jeremy Clarkson is in.
