Dude, "that guitarist", Ritchie Blackmore is at least as much a legend as Dio (the band was actually initially called "Blackmore's Rainbow") and Cozy Powell ("the drummer") not far behind. Followed by Rainbow Mistreated live in Munich 1977. Ronnie James Dio delivers one of the greatest if not the greatest vocal performance by Hard Rock Metal vocalist ever.
The guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, was a real pioneer. He popularized the well known metal guitar staples of sweep picking, tremelo picking, scalloped fretboards, modal scales, and classical music structure. Many consider this the first symphonic metal song
Rainbow drummer was Cozy Powell, one of the greatest of all time, as you quickly noticed ;) And at least to me, Ritchie Blackmore in his prime (which this is) is the best guitarist ever! Are you familiar enough with Deep Purple? In the early 70s they were up there with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath - another band where every member is one of the best of the world Know 'Child in Time'? (a 70s version, when Ian Gillan still had all his vocal range)
He's not familiar enough with Deep Purple, I can promise you that. I believe he's only done Child In Time and I don't think he particularly liked it. He needs Burn, Stormbringer, Highway Star, Space Truckin, Speed King, etc... something faster.

Great reaction. Happy to see you now finding DIO. It's quite the experience. My question is are you ready for the ultimate experience? Mistreated live by Deep Purple followed by Mistreated live by Rainbow.
Besides being a great vocalist, what makes RDJ so good is how he expresses the lyrics. He takes you on a ride with his storytelling that usually leaves you with chills. Now put that together with one of the greatest guitarists and drummers in rock and you have magic. Rainbow was a magical band. Ritchie Blackmore is so freaking great on the guitar. Very few can match his skills. Now, you really should listen to RDJ when he was with Black Sabbath. Heaven and Hell is one of the most, if not the most, iconic metal songs written. A bit different style, same magic.
I find this to be one of the greatest songs of all time Truly, deep epicness in its greatness. You should have watched a lyric video to grasp the full epicness of this
You have to give Ritchie Blackmore some credit for Rainbow! (was also in Deep Purple!) "Dio possessed a powerful and versatile vocal range that encompassed hard rock and lighter ballads," Blackmore reported, "I felt shivers down my spine." Cozy Powell on drums? He played with Black Sabbath and Whitesnake too!
Let's do this by band. Rainbow: Long Live Rock'n'Roll, Man on the Silver Moutain, Kill the King Dio: Overlove, The Last in Line, Don't Talk to Strangers, We Rock Black Sabbath: Heaven and Hell, Neon Knights, Sign of the Southern Cross, Children of the Sea. Or really just any song with Dio. Doesn't even matter.
They were seen at Nippon Budokan for 74 years. I backed away from a rock, but I'm listening to rock after a long time recently in BANDMAID in TH-cam. I knew you by a reaction and so met up with RAINBOW after a long time. The level of BANDMAID feels something near them. OZZY OSBOURNE and IRON MAIDEN were my youth. Please persevere in a fun delivery, I'm supporting from Japan.
Vou are young. I was 14, when this came out. I bought it right then, listened to it so much and I lent it to all my friends wanted, because they all wanted to taperecorder this. So glad you reacted to this giant of a song. Do you have an idea, who the guitarist is? :)
The drummer is Cozy Powell. His most famous solo song is Dance with the Devil. He later played the drums for Whitesnake and Black Sabbath. The guitarist is Richie Blackmore from Deep Purple (Smoke on the water, Highway Star, Child in Time for example).
Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, & Cozy Powell are monsters ... I mean masters. I always say watch Rainbow in the 1977 Munich concert....it's so good. "Mistreated, Catch the Rainbow, Man on the Silver Mountain ...etc. All beyond great performances. However you need to check out Dio with Black Sabbath... "Sign of the Southern Cross, Heaven & Hell, Falling off the Edge of the World, Children of the Sea" Or even later in his career "Bible Black" with Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath line up) You really can't go wrong with Dio.
Yes my friend. Ronnie is within my top 10 metal/rock vocalists of all time (along with Bon Scott btw). Mainly known for his time in bands such as Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio. Before this he sang in Doo-Wop bands. He was a very versatile vocalist and I am just glad I got to see him perform with 'Heaven & Hell' (Black Sabbath) here in Perth WA, before he unfortunately passed away from cancer. Seeing as though this is early on in your RJD journey, check out the Sabbath song with him titled 'Heaven & Hell' as it's probably the most popular one I have noticed people react to (along with Rainbow's Stargazer). So much great music from this man. Enjoy your journey bro. \m/
Arguably the greatest metal voice of all time. You should react to the live version of Children of the Sea; it's a great example of what a great storyteller and entertainer he was. I guarantee you'll love it!
Rainbow and Deep Purple played live in Japan in the 70s and 80s and that is why we now have Band Maid and Nemophila and Lovebites and Baby Metal, etc....They loved Rock back then even though they did not know the English language and now they are giving us fantastic music in return. I only mentioned Rainbow and Deep Purple here because they are my fav bands and I saw Deep Purple in 1973 and Ritchie Blackmore is a guitar god. Loved your reaction as I see people like yourself enjoying this music and giving it air time. The 60s and 70s were fantastic for music that's for sure. Then came the 80s...then later on it got sort of dead and now it is being revitalized in the Japanese bands and reactions to Rainbow and Deep Purple. Dio is unbelievable as well as the others. Keep up the excellent work in exposing these great bands of the past.
Ritchie Blackmore is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He was also in deep purple. If you remember the song smoke on the water that was him playing guitar in that band.
Here's my two cents worth with three suggestions for more Dio, all from different bands: Starstruck from this same Rainbow album (my personal favorite Rainbow song), Heaven and Hell from his Sabbath days, and Rainbow in the Dark from his Dio days. Can't go wrong with any of these.
Dio`s music is a Holy Grail for a true Heavy Metal fan. There are so many songs and whole albums worth listening to. Dio, Powell, Blackmore. Masters of their own league. Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, Long Live Rock´n Roll, I, Last in Line, Sign of the Southern Cross, Heaven and Hell, Falling of the Edge of the World...
As stated already this is Rainbow. From their 2nd album Rainbow Rising. Not only their best album but considered by many one of the best heavy rock albums ever made. That guitar player is Ritchie Blackmore. He left his band Deep Purple to form this band. Ronnie was some what of an unknown singer when he hired him for the band. Drummer Cozy Powell left after a couple of albums to play with The Jeff Beck Group & Black Sabbath for a bit.
Gates Of Babylon,Kill The King, Tarot Woman and Rainbow Eyes are my favourite Dio Rainbow songs. Then there's Graham Bonnet with Since You've Been Gone which is just great, arguably their most famous song.
I am not a native english speaker. One of the things that fascinates me most about Ronnie James Dio is that I can almost always understand the lyrics that he is singing. This is very rare. I still struggle with half the american tv series when subtitles are not on, but here was a guy singing at the top of his voice and I can still understand him! (most of the time)
This was Rainbows best line-up. Dio was also in the band Elf before this. Ronnie was one hell of a personality. Last time I saw him live, was at Wacken 2009 with Heaven and Hell. He passed away may 16 2010. R.I.P
That's classic Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Jimmy Bain and Tony Carey. Possibly one of the greatest rock songs from one of the greatest rock albums, Rainbow Rising. Try the next track on the album, A light in the black, that's a masterpiece.
Thanks for great reaction again. I wonder about one thing though... Rainbow has such an amazing catalogue of great songs. Why do youtubers only react to Stargazer? Temple of the King, Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, Catch the Rainbow...
I love Stargazer (one of my favorites), but you are right soooo much more. Catch the Rainbow is also one of my favorites. Temple of the Kings is awesome. I tell people if they really wanted to know how good of a singer Dio was, listen to "Rainbow Eyes". I am not sure if there is a more beautiful song. Then get heavy and go listen to Dio with Black Sabbath .... "Sign of the Southern Cross". Then tell me another singer that can sing both those songs.
This was always the Dio/Rainbow track for me, I remember painting that album cover on denim in 1985. I feel there is a structural thread in here that leads all the way to my favourites Epica, and even Wintersun-my wife startled me by saying 'Sons of Winter and Stars reminded her of stargazer'
Blackmore created Rainbow after Deep Purple. Blackmore recognized talent and he always surrounded himself with it to go along with his own talented quality guitar playing. This band is what propelled Dio's solo career.
I cut my teeth on heavy rock with this live album in my early teens, played it all the time ;) & kudos to Ritchie, the man behind one of the all time classics, Smoke on The Water (with Deep Purple)!
Ritchie Blackmore is the guitarist in both bands. Mistreated live by Deep Purple at the California jam with the double shot of David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes on vocals.
Cozy Powell, one of the greatest Rock drummers to ever live. Tragically died in a car accident several years ago. He played with many of the godfathers of hard rock and metal. Rainbow was an early super group. Ritchie Blackmore the guitar god from Deep Purple. Ritchie discovered Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale who went on to form Whitesnake. You are not quite old enough to remember the godfathers of hard rock and metal. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. All three started in late 60's and went thru a couple decades or more.
Ah man, I wanna throw in a wrench and say, you would absolutely love Shogun (song), by Trivium. It's nearly 12 minutes but worth every second. It has some fast paced parts, some soft parts, and it'll be one of your favourites for sure man. Love your content! Stay safe!
Drummer Cozy Powell drummed for Jeff Beck, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Emmerson Lake and Powell and many more, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore was fed up with Deep Purple and made his own band Rainbow..
Epic, Epic, Epic song. The Last In Line Rainbow In The Dark Don’t Talk To Strangers Heaven and Hell These are just a few in the amazing world of RJD, listen in awe. \m/ Stay Metal \m/
You should check out A LOT of songs from Rainbow, a few to start are A Light in the Black (It's another 8 minute song that is a continuation of this song, the next one on the album), Gates of Babylon, Man on the Silver Mountain, Kill the King, Tarot Woman, Sixteenth Century Greensleeves ...
No one ever did ! Alex Terrible is great ! I am not a big fan of growling but this guy ! And the vocalist of Archspire as well . Both impresses me for different reasons.
"Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath when Dio was fronting their band... You will not regret it!
agree 100%
Best Black Sabbath album without Ozzy
Exactly Dio rulez :)
That one live version is fucking sick!
Cozy was the reason why I start to playing Drums in mid 1970!!!
This line up was amazing. Dio, Richie Blackmore and Cozy Powell are legends. Rising is an outstanding album. A truly masterpiece.

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio.... ultimately, they are all connected. And I love them all!!
Best concert i ever went to in Edinburgh in1976- yeah I'm that old!
Credit to Cozy Powell (R.I.P), superb drummer
Mr. Rock N Roll + Stargazer = that end my day pretty well, Keep it up and I love your reactions with Brittney Slayes, Hope more are coming.
Die young from his time with Sabbath and Tarot woman from the Rising album - you cracked me up big fella!! :)
This is one of the songs you can fall into it like in a supermassive black hole while listening to the music...
I cut my teeth on heavy rock with this live album in my early teens, played it all the time ;)
& kudos to Ritchie, the man behind one of the all time classics, Smoke on The Water (with Deep Purple)!
7:26 see Bruce Springsteen with Tom Morello at R'n Roll Hall of Fame... Ghost of Tom Joad... Awesome Solo by Tom
Yes more ! Dio - Next In line ! You won't regret it ! Wonderful buildup intro !
Sounds really bizarre when someone looks at Ritchie Blackmore AND , not knowing him .. Hilarious !!
That would have been around 1976, it's amazing that his voice had hardly changed from then until 2010 when he passed at 67. \m/ RJD \m/
Still sounded great when he was in Heaven & Hell .... "Bible Black" is a great song and his voice is still powerful.
Yep, that's my fave song off that album.
Love your enthusiasm dude :)
Epic, Epic, Epic song.
The Last In Line
Rainbow In The Dark
Don’t Talk To Strangers
Heaven and Hell
These are just a few in the amazing world of RJD, listen in awe.
\m/ Stay Metal \m/
it's mandatory to react a light in the black from the same album. It's stargazer part 2!! You won't regret
An all time rock classic. RIP Ronnie and Cozy.
Would love to see you react to Slaughter to Prevail: Demolisher. You’ve not heard deep vocals before this.
No one ever did ! Alex Terrible is great ! I am not a big fan of growling but this guy ! And the vocalist of Archspire as well . Both impresses me for different reasons.
