    I really enjoy seeing you repurpose old wood. Too often craftsman overlook the treasure of lumber that is out there free for the taking and opt instead for fresh from the kiln. Thanks for your vids Matthias!

    This video is a great example of how it is the quality of the joints and the shape of the wood rather than the total amount of wood that makes a peice of furniture rigid and durable

    This is the Ikea GORM shelf - it is extremely cheap and someone forgot the back braces that give the shelf a diagonal/crosswise support

    • @vwegert
      @vwegert 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      GORM was a good shelf system. Then they took a few millimeters off on every side to make things a bit cheaper, making the successor HEJNE incompatible to GORM - and quite a bit more flimsy. Still like my HEJNE-based workbench, though :-)

    I'm pretty sure those shelves are an IKEA kit - or they're very similar. In the IKEA kit there's a diagonal steel member to address the wobble issue, but it would seem whoever put that kit together left that bit out.

      James Scheffler that was my thought right at the start of the video. A few diagonal struts, or corner gussets, would have saved a huge amount of work here.

    • @iPelaaja1
      @iPelaaja1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      James Nugent Ikea items are difficult to assemble?? Seriously... It's one of the easiest things you can do. The instructions are clear and parts usually only go one way and in one place. I dont understand how someone would not be able to build Ikea furniture.

    @ 2:22 Note that with the 2:1 reduction and measuring in inches, 13/8" in the template equals 13/16" in the workpiece, or a simple doubling of the denominator. Working with fractions is underrated!

    definitely the way to go, adding a diagonal member/s to the back would help a little bit but if any side of a wobbly "cube" isn't braced it won't be rigid.

    When I build my ladder shelves, I usually make fronts 5mm lengthways longer at the bottom than backs. 5mm is only a SLIGHT difference and it works like a charm. I have build a few library shelves this way and none of them slants forward. With 5mm longer on front, all my ladder shelves rest perfectly against the walls, no wobbliness and so no need to nail them against walls. I have one entire wall covering with sturdy shelves holding thousands of books.

    Here is how build utility shelving. It is utterly simple, very strong, easy to assemble and disassemble. I drill a hole at each corner of my shelving material. I cut PVC conduit to lengths equal to the shelf spacing required. I run four long lengths of threaded rod through the shelf corner holes and through the PVC spacers. Nuts and washers top and bottom on the threaded rods pull everything together, and I am done. This method also enables shelving units to be hung from a ceiling - the top ends of the threaded rods secured by appropriately strong brackets. Threaded rod can be purchased in lengths up to 10 feet.

Is there another company or service that does this in the USA? I have many rooms full of many shelves that need testing. I like to believe my work is proficient, but with a toddler around I'm beginning to second guess myself. I'm guessing it's fairly simple for an expert, but still quite expensive?
