Raja Paarvai (Royal Vision) (1981) is a Tamil language feature film directed by Telugu film director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. The story was written by Kamal Haasan, for whom the film was also his 100th starrer and first production. The score and soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. The film is also known as Amavasya Chandrudu in Telugu. Kamal Haasan got the basic idea of the storyline from "Butterflies are free"((1972), an Oscar winning actress " Goldie Hawn").This drama tells the tale of a blind violinist, Ragu (Kamal Haasan), and a young lady, Nancy (Madhavi) who is keen on chronicling Ragu's inspiring life as a visually impaired but independently living person. He enjoys Hollywood movies of super heroes and I tell him, this is ok but all bullshit, real movies talk about simple things about the beauty of life, of being together with who you like, and have nice songs and Melody, that's what I'm teaching him and wanting him to get educated,

I first saw Raaja Paarvai in then Madras at its time of release in 1982. This song was a rage even then. Critics were gaga over this song and it ruled the airwaves over Madras A and Madras B of AIR for well over 2-3 months. Sublime blend of vocal & instrumental music with movie picturisation. Raja Paarvai was not a commercial success at the time of its release but 'Andhi Mazhai' has withstood the vicissitudes of time. Sublime Ilayaraaja Sir. I bow in teverence to your genius.

Besides the marvellous contribution of all ( MD IR who generally notches a bit higher for Kamal , SPB, SJ, the Lyricist Vairamithu and of course Kamal the hero and the producer , Madhavi ) what stands out equally is the aesthetically pleasing and imaginative cinematography of Baroon Mukherjee. Why wasn't this good talent used in Tamil movies ?

What an extraordinary expressions in singing.. Balu garu: "ettana nALaDi" @ 2:15 and Janaki amma: "ragasiya rAtiri puttagamE" @ 3:58. Recently in a Telugu music show here in the US, Balu garu sang this beautiful song written in Telugu by the great poet Veturi garu (SundaramO sumadhuramO), and mentioned that he loves this pallavi in Tamil written by Vairamuttu garu so much that it depicts the blind man's character that says to his love, "I see your face in every drop of rain", what an extremely brilliant imagery.. just loved it! Thanks to Balu garu for bringing me here and also for this great song, and of course the composer Raja garu! It moves me so much proving again, music has no language! :)
Do you know thamizh? if not its very difficult to get the complex layers of imagery and emotions expressed so poetically as its very difficult to explain the layers. your comment seems to suggest you do, so more happiness to you, that you are able to undertsand the layers and verbal imagery constucted and the emotions and of course the music, voice singing and all other aspects. Dhegam yaavum theeyin dhaagam, dhaagam theere nee thaan megam being one example of the complex imagery lyrics/words music combination. Really beautiful
